Vellfire did not seem angry at all to me. Seemed perfectly calm. Hard to read that in the form of text though.
These aren't comparable at all, and I think that's part of the reason you don't understand. The offensiveness is part of it (though I think if you consider that they HURT people as oppose to OFFEND them you'll find a lot more empathy there), but you also have to consider that these slurs reinforce and encourage negative stereotypes towards already marginalized and oppressed groups. You also have to consider that they are heard ALL the time. Being called a faggot or a bitch once may not seem like a big deal, but you have to consider that people get called these things CONSTANTLY. If I had only been called bitch once in my life it wouldn't be a big deal, but when you get called bitch and slut and whore or faggot anytime someone doesn't like what you say or just doesn't like YOU, it adds up. I'm glad that you choose not to use them, but you really do need to understand why it's important not to. Our world, especially online, has an absurd lack of empathy. Stop thinking of them as irrationally offended people and start thinking of them as people who are genuinely hurt by your words.
I know they aren't comparable. But I can at least imagine the emotional damage caused by being verbally attacked as a minority group is merely the exponential equivalent of the same for a non-minority. I can imagine the same BUT MORE of what I felt would be harder to ignore/tolerate, but not impossible.
Being heard all the time though can have a multitude of effects, from being extremely demoralizing (Like what you are saying) or normalizing/taking the bite out of the words.
There is another issue when it comes to these words, people will always lower a neutral PC word into a negative in just using them in the right/wrong context.
An EXCELLENT EXAMPLE:
Idiot and moron, are words in that in the past, were used to merely describe people in various states of mental retardation. Now, because of its use to denote poor mental abilities, it eventually just became an insult. Merely the word 'Retarded' came into use, now it, like moron and idiot, are used mostly as an insult. In the 90's, as a kid I remember people pushing the the term 'special' to be a less offensive alternative. Guess what, now that very term is having THE VERY SAME THING happen to it. If someone says you are 'Special' they are saying you are stupid. They are insulting you. There is nothing one can truly do to avoid the inherent meaning of words to describe things society things makes one lesser. What matters is THE INTENT to be offensive. Not the word. Making up newer words to replace a 'defiled' word is just giving the people that are being offensive new ammunition.
OR:
We talk about fag and faggot, but the words gay, queer, homo, or homosexual is just as offensive in the same context. Meaning it just seems like people are picking random words of the bunch to be permanently off limits to even the non-prejudiced non-dickery context. Saying the word 'faggot' in the context of a joke is equal to using 'homosexual' in the same joke, so why is faggot worse? It comes off as a pointless distinction.
If people never used the word 'bitch' to insult you for the things commonly associated with the word 'bitch' they'd just use another word.
Dictionary definition of the slang use towards a woman:
"a malicious, unpleasant, selfish person, especially a woman. "
Imagine the same meaning applied to ANY collection of letter/sounds/phonetics. Its clear what matters in this context is the intent or meaning. And people will always have that intent at some point, it is basically inescapable. The word 'Bitch' is only sharpened by making it taboo. Not that making it not 'taboo' would help, because then people would scrounge for a new word.
This is a good point btw, but I want to say something just in case someone is thinking this because I've seen it happen several times (maybe not here so this could be a waste but I want to say it to be safe): if you are not part of the group the word is targeting, you do not get to reclaim or redefine it. There are a lot of white people who think they should say nigger or straight people who think they should say faggot a lot in order to "make it less powerful" or redefine it. That's not how it works. It's up to the group themselves to decide to do that and you need to be respectful of that group's decision either way. This comes up a LOT in conversations about "how come BLACK people can say the n-word and WE can't?".
People hate being excluded. They REALLY HATE IT. They also don't like being told what to do/say (unless conditioned) but that's not as important as "We are allowed to do this because we are in <exclusive group> that is impossible for you enter, fuck off."
I'm not saying that's a good reason (or the only reason), but its one of the stronger ones.
Another issue that people commonly tell me that they, by default, don't respect anyone, until they PROVE worthy of their respect. Thus they feel no reason to respect individuals or groups alike. With respect out of the way, the only justification in their mind that they should not say those things (faggot/nigger) when they are angry at someone/laughing at someone IN OR OUT of the group the word is that its just 'incorrect' to say in polite society. For many, being impolite feels about as bad as pirating music.
Most people, also don't care if they are part of polite society. If anything, they think polite society is one of their few remaining things to rebel against. And everyone wants to be a rebel.
I'm going to be honest about myself as well:
-I, by default, respect people, rather than the other way around. (one point for me being a nice person) You can however earn my disrespect/lose respect.
-I, however, believe that if people don't, by default, respect others that is their prerogative.
-I also kind of admire the rebel type.
-I bitterly dislike exclusion/being excluded/other people being excluded from my group. (Reminds me of how much I hate the Telvanni in Morrowind, sure you can join them, but their entire purpose is to kick all the other races out of Morrowind because they think they have the only right to be there)
People who aren't the down trodden (white, straight, male) think they want to be the down trodden because then they get a cause to fight for. I think that might be a big reason why the common white/male nerd wants to live in a dystopia/apocalypse so they can fulfill the need/urge to FIGHT THE OPPRESSORS/MAJOR THREAT (which in real life no longer exist for them).
Reminds me of Fight Club. "We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives."
I'm kind of going on a tangent now. But I still think I sort of made a point. Don't know exactly what it is though.
Also, I pretty sure I've missed a point that I wanted to make while writing this so if I remember it I may double post.
