Post how many kilowatt hours you use per month. I heard it's common for people living alone in US to use like 1200 kWh while actively trying to be "green" and eco friendly. I think that might not be the case in europe because electricity is a bit more expensive. How high is your electrical bill? I'm not asking how much you pay but how many joules you use. I use about 72 when living with my sister.

Actually I use 259.2 megajoules per month not 72. That's in kWh which is a non SI unit

1.21 gigawatts, but I just use the plutonium I stole from a group of Libyan terrorists. If that ever fails I can always rely on a bolt of lightning.

I was talking to my cousin once about investing in solar panels (he was trying to talk me into starting a business selling them) and its honestly a pretty proficient way of not paying electricity and actually hoarding your own power cells to use when the sun isn't out. I guess in some places further up north ie alaska, washington (maybe) it might not be that proficient but in florida its def a good idea.

I'm looking at building my own home after I pay my car off in the next 3-5 years. I can either get one of those energy efficient homes that come in housing units (I think) which are pretty cheap but pretty nice too. I think they run about 50-70k or I can have one built custom which would be way bigger and nicer. In the state of Florida you get a first home owners loan with no interest or something like that (its a good deal) and you can have private contractors build your home without a license needed. My brother and his boss know practically everyone I'd need to do it except for a plumber, so I'd have to find a plumber. Theres this guy around here named todd who is a real talented/experienced home builder and they said they could get me a hook up with him. Something about I could get a custom build of a Watson or Williams style home (I can't remember the name of it exactly but it sounds like on of those if it isn't) which would be jacking their blueprint and changing it around to my own preferences. Dude said after everything (solar panels not included) it would come to around 80k for a pretty large sized house. Thats a fucking steal period but around here its better than even buying an older home. They have alot of houses for sell around here at about 90-120k and you could probably talk them down because the housing market is atrocious around here and there are houses for sell out the yin yang. People are just greedy as fuck about it and you have to negotiate with them and I'd rather not waste my time telling some old dude I don't have time for his salespitch barter market bullshit when I can build my own way better.

ANYWAYS, I'm thinking about when I do it getting solar panels installed. They're pretty expensive (I think a couple grand a panel) but in the long run they're worth it because you can sell energy back to local energy companies and like I said hoard your own power cells and never have to worry about an electric bill. The only real maintenance you have to do on them is keeping them clean.

I also want to build a bigass coyfish pond but thats another story for another day...........................

get the solar panel if you want but put it on an adobe pueblo

really, I don't know anything about florida's cities, but you'd save more money/hurt the environment less by not having to drive everywhere all the time, tho that depends on how you have to get to work and other stuff

also in hotter climates it may prove more beneficial to put in multiple trees for microclimate and shade (if planting trees is an option) rather than attempting to capitalize on full sun exposure. I dunno how much power one solar panel generates anyway

just some more garbage to think about

well right now I just drive when I'm home though it was more than I needed to before because of shit like going 4 hrs to see a doctor for my hands, dating a chick that lived 40 minutes away, and sometimes I get fed up with shit and just DRIVE and listen to music (which is kind of dumb but whatever). I was driving to louisianna alot to go to work for the past few years but now they're switching our company to international so I'll be flying most of the time. I got my car in 2010 and I have about 39,000 miles on it now. Shit pisses me off because my warranty is 75,000 and I wanted to pay it off before that expired.

trees are everywhere around here and if I get a house it will probably have them all in my yard anyways but I'll keep that in mind. I think I'll put the panels on the roof and try to keep a clearing east where the sun rises and directly over my home so I can pick up power like that. But I don't think it has to be direct sunlight, just not too cloudy or overcast. I'm not really worried about the environment, I mean when I build I'm gonna keep it in mind but its more about my own saving money from energy consumption and like I said being self-sufficient.

There are alot of storms and hurricanes around here so fuck the power goes out because of that I got my own stuff to run off of and am not worried about shit like that. I don't really want to have to run a generator system for that either because that shit is expensive and just burns gas....I don't want to fuck with gas at all.

in the northern hemisphere you typically use a south-facing slope/roof for solar panels, because that actually gets the most sun

yeah the power goes out here all the time too and my parents are the only people in the vicinity who don't have any kind of power generator. everyone else has a gas generator tho so I guess the joke's on them
