Retro GamesThe 7th GuestUh I don't think I need to tell you guys for the millionth time how much I love The 7th Guest because you've all heard me talk about it before by now. It's an FMV PC game from the early 90s, a puzzle game with a bit of a point and click adventure game overlaid on it. They ported it to the iPhone and it's a pretty dang good port. The graphics look good (well, as good as they ever can haha) and the sound is good and everything, basically the game is exactly how I remember it as a kid. They did a good job updating the controls to work with the iPhone, like adding a cursor zoom so you can see what you're clicking properly. This was my biggest worry, since porting a PC game to the iPhone is a pretty daunting task. The game still spooks me really bad so if you like horror stories and puzzles check it out. I was glad that they took out the nearly unbeatable microscope puzzle everyone complained about (especially since it would be hard to do on a small screen anyway). They actually took that puzzle (more of a minigame really) and made an updated one with proper non-awful AI for the iPad, but I don't have one so I've not checked it out. If you have one, it might be worth trying idk!
Alter EgoAlter Ego was originally a DOS/C64/etc. game in the mid 80s, but it has been ported to a lot of things since. I'll describe the game, but if you just want to try it out you can play a browser-based version
here. I was actually really excited to see this game on the iPhone, since it's a lot more comfortable than playing the browser version on the iPhone's browser. It's essentially a text-based game where you play through a human life. You're presented with scenarios, frequently about fairly minor life decisions (though some are major, and you can in fact die), and a few options for how you will respond. It's one of my favorite games to play when I want to play something that doesn't demand constant attention. If you like decision-based games try it out, it is really interesting. Even if it doesn't totally grip you, you might at least enjoy it for the duration of one lifespan (and you can skip to the next life stage if you get too bored with the current one, after the millionth time I get really tired of playing the baby/childhood stages).
Brain Dead 13Another old FMV game, Brain Dead 13 was a huge game in my childhood. I watched my brother play this game tons of times as a kid. It's got a cool vibe and it can be pretty funny at times. The gameplay however isn't necessarily the best--it's essentially the same sort of fast-input gameplay Dragon's Lair has, although the iPhone version gives you way more help where that's concerned. It's still a fun game to experience though.
C64This isn't a game by itself, but there's a C64 emulator in the iPhone app store. It has a variety of games you can download, though most seem to be smaller-name games. It even has Commodore Basic in case you desperately want to code some Basic on your iPhone. Might be worth checking out if any of the C64 games available for it are of any interest to you.
Capcom ArcadeSort of like C64, this isn't a game by itself but is instead a platform for games. It's a virtual arcade filled with Capcom classics. It's important to note before you check this out though that although the app is free, the games are in-app purchases. However, you can still play free. Basically, you're given a certain amount of free-play tickets once a day that you can use on any of the machines. So, if you just play it occasionally it's totally free, but if you like a particular game a lot you can buy the machine and play as much as you want. I think the machines are 99c each, so it's not bad. They add new games occasionally, but at the moment they have a variety of the versions of SF2, 1942, Ghouls n Ghosts, Commando, Ghosts n Goblins, 1943, Final Fight, Super Ghouls n Ghosts and Magic Sword. The controls are pretty good, not excellent although they do let you move them around on the screen a bit to get them to a comfortable spot for you. I don't really care for iPhone games with d-pad/button controls since it's weird to not be able to feel them but it does a good job and I like being able to play Ghosts n Goblins on the go (especially since I wasn't a huge fan of the iPhone-specific GnG games)
Dragon's LairBasically everything I said about Brain Dead 13 goes here. If you like Dragon's Lair, you'll like Dragon's Lair on the iPhone. Also, if you found Dragon's Lair far too hard back in the day, the iPhone version has button prompts so you have way more of an idea what you should be doing and when than you did in the original. The game looks nice and clean on the iPhone, as it should since I think the game has been released in Bluray format.
Space Invaders Infinity GeneI grabbed this because I loved the PS3 version of this. The iPhone version doesn't grab me quite as well, perhaps because the controls feel a bit weird to me, but I also can't say that I wouldn't recommend it. It's still a solid game and if you're into Space Invaders you should give it a try at least.
SkiFreeI think the version on the app store renamed itself to "FreeSki" but seriously this is just a port of Ski Free for the iPhone and it rules. And when I say port, I mean port, not remake or knockoff or whatever. We're talkin original graphics and everything. The touch controls work very well for it, so there's nothing much I can add besides It's SkiFree.
Indie GamesBonkey TrekAnother game made by our main man QUIMDUNG, Bonkey Trek is a port of the
flash game that I think made its rounds around here a while back. Just...just check it out ok???
Drift Sumi-eThis is a surprisingly cool game idea. Drift Sumi-e is (as the title implies) a drift racing game with a sumi-e art style. However, you don't control you car directly. You control the car by tracing your finger along the track as quickly as you can while still hitting the right spots. You then see your car drive along the sumi-e ink path you drew, drifting as it goes. You're scored based on your speed and your accuracy. It's a fun, short game to play here and there and the art style is seriously neat.
Magnetic Shaving DerbyThis is another fun game to play for a few minutes with some pretty dang cool graphics. In this game, you're given a huge face, a razor blade and a magnet. Using the magnet, you have to move the blade around the face to shave all the hair off, while not cutting anything else. Occasionally the polarity will be reversed, causing your magnet to drive the blade away instead of attracting it. It's very simple, but very engaging.
Pro Zombie SoccerThis game was made for touch screens for sure. Pro Zombie Soccer is a game in which you have to fight off waves of zombies using a powerful soccer ball. The game has a decent amount of story to it, but the gameplay is what makes it so good. After all, I'm sick as FUCK of zombies, but the gameplay of this game made up for how much I don't want to see zombies anymore. You've got to aim your ball just right to hit them, and there are different types of zombies that require different strategies. There's also powerups and what have you that add a bit more variety.
So Long, Oregon!I really REALLY dig this game. Essentially, the creator has taken the idea and graphics of Oregon Trail and replaced the gameplay with that of something like Excitebike or Trials HD. You've got to send your wagon over hills quickly and keep your balance, while still doing the regular Oregon Trail deal of stopping in towns and shooting at animals. Your goal is to reach El Dorado and fill your wagon with gold. However, once you get that gold, you now have to drive your wagon in reverse back to Oregon. It's an incredibly cool game and really fun, although very challenging.
Tiny TowerI don't even know how to recommend Tiny Tower because I feel like there's not much separating it from something like a Facebook game and yet it is entirely engaging and has the coolest style and a good sense of humor and the creators are really cool and I like checking in on my tower every now and then and oh god there is no way for me to explain why this is good but it is
Other GamesDerby QuestI almost hesitate to recommend this game because idk if anyone but me would give a shit about it but it's a surprisingly detailed horse raising/racing sim. It's basically exactly what I wanted, which is a portable game like Derby Owner's Club in the arcade. Of course, I don't know if anyone else wants it. If you want to breed horses and race them then this is probably the best game you'll find on the iPhone (and has 3D graphics to boot!) but of course you have to want to play a horse game or else you probably won't like it.
Worms GolfTeam17 essentially had the idea to take the basic engine/gameplay of Worms and use it for a minigolf game. It's about as fantastic as you'd expect. I only got this game recently, but it's been a really fun one.
