Hi all. No doubt you've been wondering if anything's happening with regard to the construction of a main site. Or not, maybe you've given up on ever seeing one, and that's okay too.

A new site is actually being planned. It's going to be very minimal and will draw from content posted on the forum. All sorts of content will be accepted. There's not going to be a push to specifically make Salt World a gaming site, or anything else. It will be what you make of it, and the barrier to entry will be very low: that's the general idea.

I've talked to a couple of people about their ideas for the site and it's nice to get suggestions. If you have any ideas, feel free to post them here or send them to me in private.

Unfortunately, the plan has been delayed somewhat due to my being sick for a while. Right now I'm just getting back into working full-time, and I've got a lot of catching up to do. Personally I'm aiming to get the design done in July (meaning the site will only have to be programmed).

Another relevant change will be that we're switching to a different forum software again. We'll be switching back to IPB (Invision) because, frankly, SMF just sucks. It can't even make password protected forums. Of course, all data will be maintained except for a small cutoff window.

But seriously though!! Let's keep this topic a lil bit clean and open to a discussion about what you'd like to see on the new site.

pips are the most important thing . . .

i am prolly BIASED IN THIS but if there is some convenient widget or script or w/e for embedding spotify playlists it'd be nice if there was somewhere on the mainpage for our collab spotify

also i don't know a TON about it but i think IPB has a built in thing now where admins can like...PROMOTE a thread to be a front page article so if you work with their built in system that'd probably be the best way to do front page articles.  i don't know the specifics so i can't really say how well this would work but at least the way i understand it it seems like it'd work a lot better than having people submit articles or w/e basically they can just write articles as OPs and if they're good promote them i guess???

i feel like the moderation/submission systems in the past were sort of a barrier to people who wanted to submit things so i think this would be easier

so will it be more of a portal to the forum like Eurobricks?
The risk will still be that not having a specific focus, may be hard to get new people, but then maybe being able to showcase the members' creations would be the thing that gets people in.

Something like that but none of that horrible standardized crap, it will be custom built and tailored to suit exactly our needs.

Yeah, the thing is, I'm fairly convinced that previous attempts failed to work or gain traction because they were all very specifically aimed at making a game making site out of something that had long ago ceased to be about that. But that doesn't have to mean it will be an amalgam of random things. We should look at what we have, and what we are, and build something out of that rather than force ourselves into a direction.

It's such a simple idea, but clearly what this place needs

About attracting new members, idk we seem to attract the type of people who might value this place even without a main page

you know I was thinking the other day about how we should have just kept the GWBlog instead of using it as a placeholder while a "real" site was being made.  I guess this is more or less the same thing but with more of a focus on the community and less on writing articles about WHATEVER.  not totally sure what I'm trying to say here other than cool I'm glad we're getting a main page of some kind, also I wish I hadn't been so lazy when I was staff for the blog :(

I think as long as you keep the initial design super simple, very easy to update on a regular schedule and don't let too many people come in and spoil the design process, this might actually happen.

I don't know why we just didn't keep the GWBlog as a placeholder or even just make a simple wordpress for the site. But that's the past so let's just hope this works out. I'm glad someone is in control other than Drule.

i literally suggested the same exact thing as in the first one though i didn't flesh it out that much! great minds... it seems good to me though, both of em.

waiting eagerly for feated/random post - feature in the front page which it displays automaticly when getting into frontsite. hell & chaos & anonymous feated posts, here i come... ahhaha even better if they are unnamed. actually yeah you'd kinda have to tag posts for that random post cos nobody wants their too private posts jumping onto everyones sight.
takes this as a semi-serious suggestion/really secondary and fun feature... idk in spirit it's tomatoland. hell yeahhhhh. ahahaha you MUST feat that random botpost in the frontpage (who had that great concentration camp-black and white photo, i thought that post was POSSIBLY made by Hundley). all botposts automaticly featted on frontpage.

EDIT looks the above serious/realistic Afura post, burns the whole post. yeah i pr much agree (thats what i MEANT but got carried away, honestly... just feat my post history in chronological order from current to past, it would make a good ride), i could too see this happening with that design (which i also like)

These would probably work.
