wow wow wow i'm a big fan of all of your work! your paintings especially are friggin' rad, yo. wow cool this is all very inspiring~!! ~(*v*)~

 :D thank u! i made another painting,

"Llama in the Sky with Diamonds"

i wanted to do something different so I thought about songs to make a painting out of. i'm not really a fan of the beatles that much, but holy got damn the pun... how could I resist!!also  I think the full title will be "Llama in the Sky with Diamonds and the Gull with Kaliedoscope Eyes"

ahhhhhh jeez

the painting isn't so much about the llama as it is the gull. imagine a seagull somehow takes some lsd or something and is near some llamas. what you see is the trip the seagull is having, but he's freakin out!! za-za-zzz zzoinks skskscoob!!

I want to thank you for your last couple posts, sword o' kings. They caused me to locate, purchase, and break out some paints last weekend, and I've learned a bit about mixing colors if nothing else. I picked up some oil paints, but I have a collection of acrylics as well. Here are a couple oil studies I did Saturday:

Kind of a pink/orange sunset background with evergreens in front

random vegetation. i started replicating some watercress i saw this weekend (bottom of the image) then just explored colors and shapes after i got restless.

my palette afterward. luckily i had just picked up some furniture, so i used a large piece of leftover cardboard to set over a table. i may invest in an easel soon here.

anyway, look forward to some better planned studies (with scetches) and attempts with different media.

you're painting has been a huge inspiration. It's all very interesting stuff, hope to see some more.

Ahhhhh! I'm so happy to see you painting my friend. I bought some oils yesterday too and I'm contemplating my next painting in oils. I've never actually used oil myself. Anyway that's a nice vegetation study so far, I will indeed look forward to sketched compositions! I'm at school right now and I have to go to class, I have more to say so I'll add it later.

awwww man you guys are FUCKING GREAT :D thanks!!

To add to my previous post, I would started with acrylic if I were, evangel. One of the reasons I've not wanted to use oil is because it's oil based, meaning you need to buy paint thinner and shit to clean the brushes. idk I find that would be annoying, but we'll see as my next painting is going to be an oil 8x10 :P i'm not sure what yet. but I like what you have going on in that planty painting, the stylization of the tree is really cool, the brush strokes kind of guide the eye down the tree. I can't wait to see a finished painting from you!

mkkmypet thank yoU! yeah I don't know if i mentioned that, but it's all acrylic. Acrylic is actually really easy to work with, and give the same results as an oil painting, the difference is that acrylic dries quickly which can be a good thing and a bad thing depending on the situation....... and plus i think oil colors are more vibrant, but i'm not sure if that's true or not. it's kind of like someone using flstudio or ableton or whatever. you can make the same quality music with either one, it's just both have different ways of working.

ragnar I wasn't quite going for that look, but now that you mention it i think i just painted the ghana poster for an animated teen-psychodelic movie about a llama and her nervous 24/7 trippin seagull friend welp better propose this shit to dreamwark$

jamie thanks, idk how to go about making prints but i'm flattered! :D

i'm so happy you guys enjoy this stuff! time to plan the next painting.......

yo if you're gonna try out oil painting lemme give you a tip: you should make a specialized paint thinner jar! my grandpa (whose name is Art) has been a professional artist for his whole life, mostly making his living off of oil paintings (which is pretty cool and impressive). years ago, he gave me a crash course in oil painting, and he said that the most valuable tool he uses is his turpentine jar. it allows you to clean your brushes thoroughly by running 'em over a metal mesh or hole-covered plate, and then the paint settles in the bottom of it and doesn't make the top part of the turpentine cloudy, which would affect its use as a paint thinner and could make your colors look muddy. you'll save money on turpentine this way, too. so anyway, you can read about how to make your own turp jar via this page: http://emptyeasel.com/2008/02/13/how-to-make-a-paintbrush-cleaner-jar/

My god, man, the texture on that llama is amazing. The work on the diamond reflections is ingenious as well. I traced out some photos of mine today, so hopefully by this weekend I'll have some paint over it. I'm gonna try out acrylic this time.

Mkkmypet. that is a great idea for oil paint thinning. Am I supposed to fill water up to the top of the orificed can? I noticed that turpentine floats right on top of the water. The cleaning of brushes is pretty much the most difficult part of oil painting.

I'm on my phone atm, but I want to answer this asap!! The adventure game(Cookie) has been my main project for about 2 years now, but I take breaks from it now and again. I've been working on it here and there, but not very much. As fun as it is, I do get burnt out on the same project! But, like I said, it's just a break.

I've been stuck at this one point in the project, it's 3 optional sequences. One the second day of the game you can either skip class, or go to class. There's no consequence for either, but choosing to go to class will result in different content than skipping(Dingis experiencing a lecture, or hiding in the bathroom touching himself) I had no idea what to fill in the not skip class part with, but I have ideas now.

I take breaks like this to get a fresh perspective. Usually I end up redoing a project completely but my artistic skill is at an adequate enough level that I will not redo any graphics in the game unnecessarily. Cookie is a very, very personal project! In fact I was thinking about posting more screens. When I get back to my desktop I will!

I've also been thinking about releasing a demo. Just the first day, maybe an hour of content if you play through at a reasonable pace and ignore a lot of optional content. I have almost all the content done for this demo, you know!

You know I will polish off the that part of the game for a demo. But bonzi gets to be the first to play!!

edit: well that was fast than I expected. Anyway, here's some stuff just for you dday:

All these screens are from stuff that'd be in the demo, but i'm pretty sure i've shown a lot of this before... but all the graphics you see almost all completely final. I don't want to give a date, but i think i can get a demo out pretty soon.

here's some stuff that won't be in the demo:

mkkmypet, that's very useful article! I love smuckers peanut butter so i can actually make something exactly like in the tut. thanks for showing me this, it'll come in handy!

evangel, thank you! it was pretty fun doing the fur. just a bunch of line brush strokes with different colors. the reflections.... ehhh i dont know how that kind of stuff works so i just guess. definetly want to see what you do though!

Heyyy it's neato to see people doing paintings here!! swordofkings there's a lot to like about the work keep it up!! You've got a nice gestural mark making which is cool and a solid understanding of using colour. Is that pre-made canvas's you're using??? If so I really recommend learning to make your own, the canvas on the shop bought ones are often pretty lifeless while using a canvas material you choose brings a lot of variety in 'tooth' (surface texture) which maybe something that'd work well with the style you use. maybe!!

Oils are a very good medium, they're really forgiving in comparison to acrylics; areas can be removed, transparencies and washes are easier to apply because of the drying times... Which can be a curse as it can get muddy if you get impatient.  There's ways around this to speed up/extend drying times and create nice effects with different materials such as adding extra linseed oil to get a nice sheen. Acrylics are great for building textural stuff but their application can either be liked or frowned upon due to the plasticity of the material itself. Also super cheap and easy which is nice!

Also you might be interested in checking out some outsider artists (maybe this is more fitting for the cool dump topic in general???) as there's a great deal who work in the bizarre and out of the ordinary subject matter and really out there compositions!!  Adolf Wolfli is a fav of mine. Also check out Ferdinand Cheval (Not a painter) too because he's super awesome. Outsider artists are usually p. great!!

But yeah super cool seeing this stuff keep it up!! If there's anything you wanna chat about in regards to painting or artists give a holler!!

@Evangel  Not entirely sure what brush cleaner you're using but I imagine you shouldn't mix it with water, as the oil paints aren't water soluble. Just fill that jar up with turps and give it a good rub on the mesh/hole thing, strain the excess turps off the brush into the jar and wipe the bristles with a rag. Rags are a definite if working with oils! They're good for cleaning brushes and also great for dabbing with a bit of turps and wiping an area of a painting to remove the pigment or create some transparency.

Mechanism A from Planet B. 16x20, acrylic.

oil takes too long to dwy *literal baby face pout* so i decided to paint something while I wait for what i've done so far to dry. see the oil painting i'm doing is probably too complex for my first oil but ehh i don't care. i'll show the oil when it's a bit more finished. but this one was really a spur of the moment painting... i drew a clock thing with an eye and a skinny lankey body so i ran with it and sketched it on a canvas...

this was fucking fun to do holy crap guys. i guess this more of like a "generic surreal" painting but whatever.

back to oil painting... damn it's much more difficult than acrylic. its tougher to mix colors, the shit takes forever to dry and the whole "fat on lean" thing has me paranoid! but the colors are nice :3 i love how it brings out the brush strokes! but i'm so used to really quick drying times. i seem to paint better when i'm flippin my shit over how quick everything is drying...

also i'm thinking about doing a tutorial series but... with a twist- "sexy painting" were we, as an audience, paint sexy apples, sexy oranges, sexy lamps, etc...

also thank you bonzi!! i sent you that pm and i see one new message in my inbox..........

anyway thank you Bin, making my own canvases seems like -_-'' kind of stuff but i would like a different tooth...thank you though, I gesture a lot sometimes when painting! sometimes a little too hard, it sounds like i'm trying to murder my canvas. but painting is an intense process... i checked out the outsiders stuff and it's really interesting, there's a lot of interesting compositions. i might try to make something inspired by it!

those are all such nasty but subtle colors. everything has such a dead pallor to it compared to your other paintings. i love the smoothness of it. i can't seem to produce smooth images yet, it's all very splotchy.

ahh thank you evangel! wanted to do something darker, a bit moodier... it looks a lot better in real life, that was a particularly shitty picture(maybe i'll take a better one??) it's difficult to get smooth lines on a smaller canvas, i swear bumping up to a 16x20 is so nice because there's tons of room to move around. plus it's easier to detail! smoothness is all about blending wet on wet(if you're usin acrylicc) but that's about the best advice I can give, i'm a baaddd artistry person... :(

anyway i'm quite excited for my next painting...

ehhh i might redo both anatomies... though i gotta say I'm impressed with how well i drew the chick w/o a reference. this idea came to me right after the other painting. after i finished, shortly after, i thought "what if a fork had a spoon for a dick..." and BAM. however maybe i went a little too far... but that's the goal of art- to push the envelope.

also, painting after this: a monkey climbing out of a pelican's secret compartment thingy with a flag of sorts.

been working on the demo guys and it's getting near completion... it's coming together!! still need to finish some animations, polish some stuff, write dialogue for a lot of npcs... but it's all falling into place. here's something I finished yesterday:

dingis eats dinner with his family after school, and decides to tell them about his day. this is an optional part of the game as you can exit the dinner eating screen at anytime you wish. however one thing I'd like to note about this is that there are certain topics that only open up if you do certain things in school. for example, talking to one of the characters at school will result in dingis getting spat on. unless you do this, you can not talk to dingis' mom and dad about being spat on.

I know this isn't a devlog but i just want to let everyone know i'm still working on cookie!!

in the mean time here's this:

someone pm'd me on youtube asking where the download link for Ghosts of Aliens is. i haven't replied to it yet, but it inspired me to redo some sprites in the same style, but better much better... top row is the old sprites. the big sprites are remade battle sprites which... aren't finished...

some more music for the hypothetical boneprides rpg. see i have no projects to make music for so this is where all my musical efforts go okay!!:

*the great cones- mysterious, almost ice cream cone shaped structures said to be built by the great Meowins, a mythical race of walking, talking cat people. The Meowin Calendar, which says the world will end dogcember, 2012, is also beleived to be purely a myth. however, it's not until later you find out the Meowins are real, and they received assistance from the Cones to build many of there megastructures. as to what the purpose of the Great Cone structures are, it remains a mystery. But... does that mean the Meowin Calendar is accurate?

oh yeah still working on the painting! almost done, but i can't work on it when people are around for obvious reasons. not many people "get it"

thank you ragnar!! :D there are samples of me saying "how you doin'" slowed down i used in chfsqust. i used the granulizer plugin in fruityloops to make em mumbly and shit. the squeek is a granulized sample of my cat meowing.

painting is done :D i'll think of a title later. i'm going to lay off painting for a bit so i can focus more on the game though... last night i got a good amount of stuff done for the dream sequence in the demo. swimming animations, mainly. the side view and front view are done, now I must do the back view. there's a lot of work going into this dream sequence! all I need to do is finish a getting out of water animation, and some nervous walking animations... then the dream sequence will be almost done.
