I'm still wondering when "fafg" became an actual slur word... if even a real word at all. Back in the day, it used to be a universally accepted inside joke via the GW community. Of course, this is Salt World now, so forgive me for using made up inside joke words on a community of relevant denizens.

I'm willing to bet "Foget" is a slur now too, eh?

are you being so obtuse as to not see the origin (and interpretation) of the word "fafg"?

You can set your member title in your profile???? Or do you mean something else?

Yes, it was a universally accepted joke based on the word "fag". It was a misspelling of the word "fag" and it caught on. It's OK if you didn't realize that at first, but just take my word for it, we don't particularly like hearing it. There was a time, years ago, when Raz actually made an emotive appeal to get people to stop saying fag and he was pretty much laughed right out of the room. That's just not how we are anymore. We've grown up.

its hard to believe that people would have said that around here, but honestly I don't even remember that being a thing a long time ago.  Of course, most of us were closer to 14 than 24 then .

Q
jmicks when/what do you want collabs?

actual Q
how does your behavior now reflect that of five years ago when it comes to acceptance, slurs, etc  and what caused that behavior to change (or not change if you think fafg is still okay to say)

if you go to http://saltworld.net/forums/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=core you should see a line "Member Title", you can change that to whatever you like. The one underneath your avatar is static, but I think I'll remove it in the layout overhaul until it becomes needed.
Q: What's best in life
A: Life is a reward in and of itself.

haha. just kidding. it's morphine.

Oh, my bad. I thought it was it's own dependant word. I knew it was based off a typo of the word, but didn't think people used the misspelling to mean it's similar word's meaning.

Always thought it was pronounced "Faugh-feg" and took on a life of it's own. Anyway, only mentioned it for nostalgia purposes. Carry on.

My apologies.

seriously dude, you could just be a little fucking nicer.
Sure, maybe I could! I'm not nice to people who get mad over people being offended by slurs that target them. Maybe that's wrong. I'm not saying this to be facetious either, maybe it really is wrong. But that's my view: to say that someone's base reaction to being offended should have a little more decorum seems very wrong to me. Some people don't have that capacity, and I'm not going to be the one to criticize them for it.

But honestly, there was literally just one post that you could consider unhelpful, Geodude's initial reaction. That's just a reaction. There was no "snide bandwagon", nothing like it. You could say I was being snide, which was in response to Warped and Afura, not to what IceSage said. But it's a massive exaggeration to say this is some kind of systemic problem on this forum. All the other posts were pretty to-the-point, I think. Some people asked him not to say fafg anymore and he asked some questions but then complied. I think it wasn't particularly bad minus the sudden escalation about tone (that didn't seem warranted at all to me).

i don't know how the fuck my suggesting policy for a repeated event makes me a target for criticism. i guess i need to GET IN TOUCH WITH REALITY.
What you're suggesting is that I somehow disallow people's base reactions to being targeted by a type of bigoted speech they don't like. I can't do that. What I meant by what I said is that it's just not reasonable to expect there to not be some kind of backlash whenever this happens. The internet just isn't a place full of people who 'get' these things. So people are gonna make mistakes, and when they happen they're gonna get called out. I can't instantly ban people when this happens, and I'd feel wrong about making some kind of policy saying "don't respond until a mod arrives to defuse the situation". If you're suggesting something else, I'd like to hear it [in ][/in].

I don't know, the way people get treated on here sometimes makes me really uncomfortable! I think the worst idea to come out of this is the idea that it is average and good and the right thing to expect and it should never change. the call-outs on hundley here are pretty obnoxious, too, and we seriously need to get away from that kind of arguing.

that's all I wanted to say, yall are great and I know you all like each other, so I guess good luck!!

I just don't have much patience for this "you should not be angry when people say stuff that offends you" thing. You might not mean to say that, but that's what it comes down to.

Yes, what IceSage said was relatively innocent—he said it because it's an old GW thing, and he apologized for it—but I'm not going to fault anyone for responding negatively to it. But there was literally only one such post. I've read the posts that were made in response, and I honestly don't think that there's anything going on aside from the first post which, again, I think is understandable.

What happened then, completely aside from all of what preceded, was a complaint about tone. I don't take very well to those things, I honestly admit it. On that one, I'm guilty as charged. I don't like it when the response to what you can see at the beginning on page 3 is "if you're going to be offended by a slur, at least be nice about it", and I don't like it when people who call out that sort of behavior are referred to as a 'snide bandwagon' without any basis whatsoever. You can't honestly expect me to find that a very decent or helpful thing to say.

I'm glad that other people agree with me. I don't like subtle hints that I'm a homophobe or think "the gays are too uppity" which are totally irrelevant just because I think some things could be handled differently.

I don't think you're a homophobe. I just don't like it when you tell someone like Geodude to be nicer to the person who said something that offended him.

Restraint. This is all that I have.

nope. I have to say: this is something me and dada just disagree on. I think its perfectly reasonable to think that people who REACT IRRATIONALLY OR SUPER EMOTIONALLY are acting in a way that they should not.

I think PMs & warns are a lot more effective at getting people to think about how their words affect other people than a cavalcade of posts all saying pretty much the same thing and making the dude defensive for 3 or 4 (or 9) pages, as has happened every other time. Afura & Hundley's posts were in anticipation of this. (Ice Sage is, thankfully, way less stubborn than every other person so far.) No, this q&a topic is not important. Yes, it's better to let people know that they are making you feel uncomfortable and anxious and scummy. So, if there's not an immediate understanding between the two of you, why not PM it to the person until you get a public admission of guilt & apology? It's not the gays getting uppity (I have a hard time believing anyone here really thinks like that), it's people repeatedly responding in a way that has proven (by the bi-monthly recurrence of these incidents) to be, for the most part, nonconstructive. Then again, it's a community in flux, not an established one, so a) all the old folks coming back are unlikely to look for new rules of common decency and b) they probably haven't seen any of the other iterations of this argument, or whatever it is. So it's bound to keep happening for a while.

also I at least have trouble dealing w/ extreme emotions and getting inside the headspace of really emotional people who can't throw up a filter in the time it takes to read & think & type & click (which I guess takes a lot longer for me than for most of you guys), but that's coming along a little better than before

it's not about niceness but rather maturity. but if you think you're handling this in a mature, grown-up way then godspeed.
