I see this all the time. Especially on Naruto forums, but it happens everywhere.

People argue on endlessly about who would win in a fight, Sasuke or <random dude>. They come up with all kinds of bullshit to prove their point, and neither of the two ever concedes to the other.

So what's the point of an argument if neither of the two are gonna change their mind?

every person is their own universe of experience and belief. depressing how many people do not understand this.

the sheer irrational chance that all events of all the eons aligning perfectly so two people can eventually meet and talk at length about something without identifiable merit. then they argue because the sum of their experiences and understandings are roughly dissimilar.

not a lot you can do, short of hoping the existence of a runaway train has been in the works for the full lifetime of all material existence and will converge with their location.

haha that's literally the best answer to your question. on top of that (that we think that we all live in a mutual world), 90% of time we start arguing or defending more for ego reasons (i must defend my intellectuality, thus my worth or value). it's a flight or fight response. thus the vast, rabid blind culture in internet of making fun, belittling, condescendment to the opposite side when "confronted" (the fight response!).

worst example is probably the e-nerd knee-jerk - reaction in eg. youtube comments "lol it's spelled 'onomatopoetic' you sub-human piece of shit." truckpump, ranch or cool ranch...

i like warped for just being able to admit that he doesn't know the answer/that he is wrong on the issue (when/if that happens). ofc W arent wrong 100% of time obviously etc but some of the smartest guys i know are seemingly almost incapable to this kind of consciousness.

also shit writin with screenkeyboard cos my experiment w/ water and laptop was partially succesful

ppl argue because they all think they're einstein and anyone who dares disagree with even one word of your sacred sermons deserves nothing less but to be put down in a grand verbal riposte.

There is part of the brain called the 「anterior insula」 that becomes active when being exposed to opinions that are sufficiently different from one's own. Its function appears to be responsible for feeling of 「disgust」, ranging from 「stinky things」 to experiences that are 「morally outrageous」 to a person, including petty differences.  I read article some time ago that said it is keyed into 「mesolimbic system」, brain's reward system, and this may also be why we are cognitively biased against rationally considering opinions substantially different from our own: it can be more neurologically rewarding to engage in feelings of disgust at percieved 「wrongness」.  In way it's not surprising, if you have ever been sanctimonious or engaged in moral outrage, it feels kind of good, huh?  That is neurological underpinning of why, and also why people are predisposed to argue over 「dumb things」, maybe.

I think it is something like being so aware of how much people are determined by their environments and their pasts, I find it hard to get too baffled at why anybody expresses any kind of opinion at all. Not that I immediately go 'ah, yeah I know why you're like this', but I always assume there is some reason for it and rather than having a disgusted response I immediately jump to so how do we handle this, and why do you think this way. People usually don't know why they think the way they do though, or at least can't communicate it, so I just have to live with the belief there is some reason and I probably won't ever know fully but why do I need to anyway - the most important thing is just how you handle it.

There is also my awareness of how much I am determined by my environment, past, and heck even chemical distortions, so I don't give my own perception of things privilege in terms of it necessarily being correct or even remotely based on reality. There IS no reality for me. Life is no sense.

I used to love arguing when I was a teenage nerd and believed 'intelligence' was one of the most important things in a person.

I also had a lot of anxiety and felt I was unpopular, so 'winning' arguments on the internet was part of proving to myself my worth/superiority in a society that I felt was defined by intelligence. school made me feel like I was junk, on the internet I was better

the more you learn about people and their backgrounds the harder it becomes to judge them. the immediately apparent extension of that is that you shouldn't harbor negative feelings towards anyone and only discuss to the point of elucidating the sheer complexity of a subject, but wait SPIT (bonzi puddi spits), there's also this thing called being a human being made out of experiences and chemicals ya goof!!

I tend to avoid arguments regarding things that are completely opinion based, unless it is for the sake of discussing for the sake of discussing. Sometimes it is fun to argue certain things, even with both parties knowing there is going to not be any changing of minds going on. (Except in fights against Sasuke. The fact that Sasuke can literally change minds with his genjutsu means he automatically wins all fights by default. Goku would definitley lose, but Android 16 might pull off a win if he's lucky, Toph from Avatar would probably kick Sauske's ass unless he can pull of a genjutsu that works through vibrations in the ground. I don't care how canon it is, any talk about SPECIFICALLY EYE-BASED GENJUTSU WORKING ON THE BLIND IS COMPLETE AND TOTAL BS)

Hell, the only time I ever feel like I HAVE to argue is when saying something as a fact, but that fact is clearly wrong. Not the same as giving out an opinion as if it is established fact, even though I could still try and argue that as opinion despite how futile such arguing will prove to be. I bet people call me a know-it-all behind my back, but if not being called that means going around and "pretending" I do not know when someone is passing about information that is clearly incorrect, then to hell with what people think of me! I personally only care about WHAT is right, not about WHO.
