I tend to have a lot of use for listening to people talk while I'm doing things or traveling. I don't think I want anything too niche, as in a film review podcast where my interest level will fluctuate greatly depending on what movie they are talking about (also every movie podcast i've tried has been hosted by idiots). Instead anything with a wide range of topics that get discussed, or some kind of news and current affairs podcast. Even just something with people who are interesting to listen to even IF the topic they discuss is limited to a particular subject area which I might not be seeking out. Maybe the hosts are funny or entertaining regardless, y'know?

I don't have anything great to recommend, but I've been listening to uhh yeah dude for years, and this american life. uhh yeah dude is just two guys talking shit about american culture basically - they are mostly interesting to listen to and are occasionally pretty funny. it's a catch all so they go into all kinds of different topics and generally engage with them as skeptical laymen. If you know what uhh yeah dude is then you probably get some idea of what I'm looking for.

This American Life is famous so I probably don't need to explain, but the way I use it is I go through old episodes to look for ones with topics that sound interesting to me. Anything too frivolous like I dunno, their thanksgiving turkey related episodes or whatever, and I'm not interested in just hearing the host and his reporters and guests talk about that because there's no core personality there, it's just all about the subject and whether that's interesting. They're kind of journalists so it's like that. Anything else like this I'd be interested in, as long as it's of a decent quality and by people who are pros or at least smart.

Also just some hard news podcasts would be good that are well presented and focus on interesting stories which they tell in an informative way. I was also considering looking for a podcast which is hosted in news anchor kind of format. I was looking to see if rachel maddow had a podcast - in this kind of thing, it isn't necessary the host be great but even if they have a distinguishable approach I can filter that'd be good. Like rachel maddow says she's a 'national security liberal' etc, so I know that's where she's coming from. I don't necessarily have to like the person.

Anyway, anyone know some good general or news podcasts?

The Mega64 podcast is generally pretty funny if you involve yourself in their mythos or whatever, but it's not very good for travel since a lot of the jokes they do on it require video to go over well which you obviously cant do if you're listening in a car

i didn't know they have a podcast, but i find some of their videos funny. i have been listenign to the giant bomb podcast for a while on and off now, but i'm looking to transition away from it because i find several of their personalities very depressing and just...corporate isn't the right word but they aren't very analytical about the environment they work in. it's depressing to hear the way they talk about life sometimes. actually y'know what it's just brad shoemaker. jeff vinny drew and patrick are all okay, but patrick's gone. it's the closest thing to a tolerable video game related podcast i've heard though.

I also occasionally listen to the Kondabolu Brothers podcast which is Hari Kondabolu the comedian and Ashok Kondabolu the goofy looking guy from Das Racist who didn't rap in any of the songs. they tend to talk a lot about race justice and stories from their different careers and they can be pretty funny too if you're familiar with either of their acts and can stand occasional social justice talk

i might check that out. i've always summarily ignored das racist (i don't even really know what they are - i guess a rap group?) because i don't like their name. and yes i can stand any kind of talk as long as it's not stupid and social justice talk is probably especially worthwhile if it is not stupid.

Jamie, if you like rap, you should give them a try. They are pretty great. At rapping.

Also, I've also recently given Giant Bomb podcast a go for my drive to work. Its fairly entertaining. I have not listened long enough to really gauge who I like in the podcast in particular though. Shoemaker's seemed like an ok guy though so I am a bit curious about what your issue with him is exactly. He's not exactly stand out. Maybe I have not heard the right episodes too know.

I also tried to listen to some science/technology/futurism podcasts but I found them all to be kind of badly done so I dropped them so now all I got is Giant Bomb ATM and a few NPR podcasts.

it's kind of an odd suggestion to make nowadays, even though it probably shouldn't, but my go-to for things like this are old radio programs. a lot of the good stuff is surprisingly well-preserved and circulated now, the trick is to know where to start. i like the goon show for comedy, dragnet for silly crime shows, really anything by the mercury theatre for drama, and jean shepherd for a little bit of everything. you're probably already familiar with the work of some of the people who were responsible for that stuff, guys like orson welles and peter sellers had pretty relevant careers after their start in radio. i could dig up some links if this is of interest to anybody, or just upload stuff myself if that stuff isn't as available on the internet anymore.

i actually suggested the same thing to diggity way back in the day and he sampled some mercury theatre and goon show stuff for his album. i guess i felt the need to qualify that this isn't completely a lame thing to suggest to somebody.

i've heard the name 'the bugle' too. another thing i didn't like the way the name sounded of...maybe i should stop dismissing things on that ground right off. i'll check that out. my pun hunger is always at 0% though.

i'd be interested in peter sellers radio stuff, he can be really funny. orson welles too, why not! you might be on to something with the old radio show idea actually. is there some kind of database i can download from or do you need to just look and find?

oh he's just a really boring person, and negative all the time when he doesn't really have cause to be

Sometimes Brad is okay and sometimes he is just like...idk he doesn't feel like he's enjoying himself as much a everyone else. I think back to that vid where he literally falls asleep. He always seems ready to fall asleep. Sometimes he gets into something and is enjoyable but a lot of times he just comes off as not wanting to be there, even though he probably does.

He does come off as somber and cynical in the few eps I've heard. But I guess I don't mind that.
