you people did this shit to me, how do I fix it? I stopped watching all news and most media, I quit listening to the radio, I fucking block 90% of facebook. How do I do it? How do I put my brain in reverse so I can not know shit and maybe stop having a compulsory knee-jerk reaction to most of what I see? I cannot even sit through a local news telivision snippet without wanting to throw up and then immediately disclaiming the anchors the news crew the writers and the fucking people being interviewed as terrible terrible people that think terrible things, this is like a really really bad mid - 80s horror flick coming of age story where you find out that the human race is a gigantic, inexcusable, stinky pile of shit and can't ever go back to neverland.

I cannot even approach politics anymore without wanting to throw up. Like this whole government shutdown thing, its fucking stupid and from any and every angle its fucking stupid and I really don't know how to think about it. I understand a basic principle from an executive perspective I guess? A way to save money a way to reinforce obama care a sum of years and years of ignorant choices and decisions? But its still too dumb to think about.

I watched a pair of parents giving their fucking six year old a trans identity crisis and almost threw up

syria.....makes you wanna throw up because putin is the only one making sense and is a complete asshole

egypt.......puke it all up! revolution, no revolution, civil war with a bunch of "uppity terrorists".

I don't even give a shit as far as sides anymore its just terrible human dilemma over and over again

Where is all of the really cool shit?

Like, I found this: http://www.nbcnews.com/science/bird-mummies-natron-lakes-toxic-waters-petrify-animals-fall-8C11322626

Which to summarize is about a lake with a really high ph balance which petrifies animals that touch it.....thats really cool.

or this:

Theres a flesh eating bacteria loose in florida's salt waters which has infected 31 people so far

A planet discovered which kind of floats around on its own without direction from a star or major gravitational force

it's a dysfunctional world because we are in many ways poorly adapted as a species to the circumstances of the modern world we have created.  you can see it in politics, and you can see it in how people make themselves miserable.  the media is just the same.

it helps to remember that we are not fallen angels, but ascended apes.  if the suffering of others bothers you, are things you can do to help it some.  if you want new cool and weird things to explore, there are definitely avenues to pursue those, and if you do not see any, there is always the power in your hands to carve out those kinds of niches for yourself.

this is still a world with many exciting possibilities for everything bad that is talked about in the mass media.  try to dwell on the positive potential, even though it's hard.   I know it is.   I really do.  but you gotta, or else all you can be is bitter and cynical, and that's an even more painful and lonely way to be. and if you can foster hope and positivity in yourself, you will find it very empowering.

also keep in mind that it's easier for media to sell tragedy and doom than the humble simple things that make life worth living.  that means you gotta do a fair deal more of your own legwork if you want to see and appreciate those kinds of things.

i hope that didn't sound preachy, these are just the things I believe to be true, and try to follow myself.

I went through a phase like this before I left home. My parents used to watch Question Time (A BBC show where some politicians and "celebrities" sort've debate a currently hot political issue in front of an angry/stupid studio audience) and then throw some sort of household daily hate where they reenacted the programme with their own subjective twist in the living room. I feel like I should at least try to be conscious of current events but in practice it is difficult to summon the motivation to do so because I've been burnt out by the misdirected passion of people that I live with.

If your media consumption is passive, i.e. you watch TV or listen to the radio then I guess you accumulate their programming and it adds to your mental stack of issues you or other people have to deal with. It's because of this that I have very little idea about what is going on in the world other than what armchair redditor newscasters show me and at least that is interspersed with meme sewage so that it is diluted with low-priority stimuli.

I turned the TV on when I was in the US and it scared the shit out of me. They must have experts working on the most effective way to scare the shit out of people and make them angry about what they are seeing, to saturate them with emotion and it made me feel really uncomfortable, which is odd in the respect that TV in the UK can't be that far behind.

Unless it's some sort of technical blog I don't really have any interest. If they released a story on the news that a thousand children had been thrown into the North Sea I would look at it then probably just move on completely indifferent. I just don't feel anything for the news and the worst part is just the realisation that it's all funded by a country of schadenfreudes who buy into it.

This community is probably one of the best sources of media out there as it is close-knit and harbors a huge amount of imagination. It's like a specialty shop on a rock full of Walmarts and I feel truly optimistic when I communicate with people here who are creative and seem to *get* the point of being given a life and tools to use to make something of it.

I think my main problem is that I have not been working for a couple months and yes definitely this:

This is a good place to get alternative media but its been kind of stale for awhile. I'm pretty much looking for any kind of interesting media or geo-political discussion that isn't inane as shit. Its pretty hard to find stuff like that unless you wanna flick through cnn, msnbc, al-jazeera web pages or tech niche sites and risk absorbing much more of that fucking garbage before you actually get anywhere.

I didn't really think any of it was preachy either. But pretty much its been said here time and again that media outlets are largly filled with brain garbage but there isn't alot of discussion as far as THIS IS SOMETHING COOL or an effort to present an alternative to said garbage.

I've been hanging out with my gfs kids alot. A five year old boy and six year old girl. I like showing them stuff and taking them to do stuff because as young kids they are not terrible people yet and have not formed opinions.

I guess you kind of need to develop selective attention. yeah the news and stuff is awful, but it doesn't really matter in the big picture ya know? I get sick of it after a while if someone around me has it on day after day, but I can tolerate it for pretty long! I do gotta stop listening or exit the room whenever it's talking about kids/adults/animals being abused tho. all news is awful imo I've never been able to find a tolerable news source that isn't directly related to my field, and even then I have to be selective.

you can also learn to tolerate/enjoy stuff that's kind of dumb but still harmless. literature helps with this. you can pick out certain themes or concepts or character types and connect em back to their source, which makes it a little more interesting. but nerdy as shyt, everyone else is saying stupid stuff about it and u feel like an alien

kids are the best........

Yeah I have a tendency to get frustrated with doom and gloom news. but not because its nothing but doom and gloom but because they try and FIND doom and gloom or find something  largely neutral or up to interpretation and cast it in a negative light to get people rowdy.

Also, I know its not the new's job. but it really hurts when they go over this sort of thing and not bother to mention what is at least being done about it or when they just make a footnote-esque comment at the end "also experts are working on it."

The news is "HORRIBLE SHIT IS HAPPENING ALL OVER THE DAMN WORLD, YOU PROBABLY CAN'T DO MUCH ABOUT IT."

The only thing I hold hope for is that science and technology rise enough to fix these issues and we remove current powers (hopefully it doesn't have to be by force) that be from their post because they aren't doing shit or are actively destructive.

hey lets play a drinking game

everyone turn on their local news, cnn, msnbc, or fox news (double shots if you're an out of towner)

Everytime the news mentions the shutdown you take one shot of Bacardi 151 and you gotta take a double when they mention the persecution of war veterans. If the news anchor starts going on some diatribe about the hopelessness of this country when we're too broke to honor "somebody that took a bullet for me" and something about feeding sack of shit single mothers you've got to keep swiggin the bottle until he/she runs out of breath.

I wouldn't suggest turning on glenn beck radio or that really fat stupid guy or you're a gonna get alcohol poisoning...
