Hi saltworlders. I tried to search for an appropriate old topic, but the flood filter slowed me down.

I'm looking for a free drawing program that does black and white textures the way Clarisworks used to in the early 90s. Mac graphics, basically, like this:

Do you have any recommendations?

I would just use photoshop and make a 4x4 checker pattern to use as a fill for the dithering. It seems pretty easy to cheese on any program.

I don't have photoshop. I forgot that paint.net has these (but not custom patterns?). I'll use that unless a better rec comes along.

Thanks for responding! Sorry for answering my own question.

It would be pretty cool to get one of these old painting programs running in an emulator.

The only thing I could suggest that hasn't been suggested already is maybe EasyToon. It is made for gif animations, but I think I remember it having a few binary tone-texture paints for the purpose of two color animating. You could just have a singe-frame project with a large canvas if you were just wanting to paint with it.

If you want the full gambit of patterns, all I could suggest is drawing the repeating pattern manually, and using some image manip magic in a program that supports selecting individual regions with the magic wand tool to fill in the rest.

Mini vMac runs pretty good

(It's one of those emulators where you need to find a ROM image separately, though.)

Oh man, I'm remembering what I went through last time I tried to unpack a .sit file in XP. I did it all for this cartoony economics sim, Run for the Money, which I only played for about 10 minutes:

Let's see if I can get ClarisDraw running.

I guess it's a CD-rom? I don't know how to run it. Trying something else.

lol easytoon. this is fun.

Btw, if you're trying to unpack old .sit files, try using Stuffit Expander 7.0 for Windows. That was the only version I got to work. I don't know where I got my copy, but there's a copy here.

You have to go to the Goodies > Brush Shape menu to change brush size.

If I have transparent parts in my gifs and I don't want them to be transparent in my game, should I fill them in white? Or does it all depend?

What gamemaking program would be best to make something in a Myst-style slideshow? No transitions, just clicking in hot spots. I'd want my gifs to scale without blurring, too. I've used gamemaker a couple of iterations back, but I'm out of touch with it. Would that be appropriate? Is there something simpler?

I like certain features paint has in b&w that paint.net doesn't have. Paint seems to do layering really well. Feels like using actual monochrome paints (whatever that means).
