Anyone a fan of stand up comedy?  Well, okay that is a bit broad of a question; so what all you favorite stand up peoples and things?  I'll be going to my first like legit stand-up show (which is more than just happening to wander into a bar and there is some dude doing stand-up) in March (seeing Aziz Ansari), and what sort of things should I expect; or is it pretty straightforward?   Have anyone of you guys seen any stand up-ers?

I don't know who's who or what's what or really most anything about standup but a few years back when I lived in a house with a television I really liked Maria Bamford who was sometimes on the comedy channel.  she also did a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFHmNrxkuFU]cool webshow[/url] a few years back that is worth checking out

never saw her live or anything though

I saw one of those Whose Line is It Anyway live shows once, and I also saw that guy from Half-Baked who was laying on the couch the entire movie

usually you just go and watch a couple of comedians do their routines. interacting with the audience isn't that popular, especially for the Big Time comedians like aziz, tho I never actually saw any of his stand up

I saw Hannibal Buress about a year ago, that was good

maria bamford, neil hamburger, tig notaro are also comedians who do stand up that I thought was good

Stephen Wright be that guy. Don't care for him much.

Louis CK is, arguably, our generation's George Carlin. I love his stand up so

I also really like Paul F Tompkins. He is just funny, I don't understand it.

yeah I'm a big stand up fan but actually there aren't that many comedians i could wholeheartedly recommend. i really like the form of it so i'll put up with a lot of stuff that i don't think is funny, or is annoying, just because i enjoy a person standing in a stream of consciousness trying to be funny like that. some of the ones i do like have already been mentioned so far. aziz ansari isn't bad, i'd go see him, so hope you have a good time! but basically yeah think of it like a one person performance. the better the comedians are the less they necessarily want to have a dialogue with the crowd and if people are heckling they generally get shut down pretty quickly. it's not really supposed to be an interactive medium beyond the audible reaction you have to the jokes, which the comedians will generally respond to in one way of another (even if not in words).

yeah, pretty much every stand-up special I have sen has been simply comedian talking to audience - gets some laffs,  I'm all good with that.   I've only seen heckling at one shitty comedy club I went to with a friend once for some yucks - we didn't get very many; turns out people are dumb and jerks sometimes (and also most of the jokes sucked).  regardless though; should be fun

i've seen a few stand up specials on netflix recently - the george carlin one up there is great because duh its george carlin

I'm very interested in standup comedy...

denzquix
It appears to be the last socially acceptable situation where one person stands up in front of a crowd of strangers, with nothing but air between them...
denzquix
...and this arrogant interloper begins to speak honestly about how the world appears to them, on no authority but the throng's willingness to listen.

A long time ago, this Messianic scene was perhaps more common, in streets and other gathering places.

Today society insists that these types be rounded up and taken to the red-brick dungeon, to have their insights interrogated out of them under the harsh spotlight, encoded into palatable comedic structure known as "routines"...

My favourite stand up by far is Reggie Watts. He mostly improvises, so you can watch as many shows as you want (which bugs me about certain comedians like Zach Galifianakis)

I've seen some past Bo Burnham stuff and this wasn't my favorite, but it was still really good overall.  I was a bit disappointed that a lot of it was pre-recorded stuff rather than his actual stand-up bits, but it was still pretty good overall.   One of the benefits of the studio recorded stuff he has done in the past is that it keeps his voice from getting really nasally, but he is still an excellent musician and performer.   #deep

This was a while ago now I guess - saw Aziz it was pretty good; not as spectular as I would have liked because the audience was rude; not in a heckling or anything like that way, but literally people would walk down the aisles every 20 seconds for whatever reason -get a drink take a pee I don't know.   People like bolted right away after the end of show - literally half the crowd was putting on coats and shit in the 20 seconds between ending and him coming back on for an encore .  What was weird was that its seemed like the audience that wasn't getting up every fucking few seconds seemed to really connect to the material and it was about as good as any of the Netflix specials that he has done in the past.   What the shit.   Still really funny though; material did not seem as varied as in the past and was primarily based on relationships and dating.  He did well with improv and convinced some dudes to let him read their texts between him and some flirt; funny but also a little lazy?    Opener was some dude I think his name was Drew Michaels, or something; funny but I'm not going  to google him to actually check because I don't give no shits
