no spoilers in this post (re: true detective season 2, up to episode 2):

so, the acting is fine. I forget if there were other rumored actors who are awful, but at this point idk what there was to be worried about. vince is fine. I really like how sad colin's character always looks. rachel is fine even with how they always have her in a superhero outfit. taylor is fine so far, tho I'm scared of that one scene from the trailer where he points at someone. really, they're all doing pretty well with some really fucking awful, clunky, inhuman dialogue

so far, the show pretty well solidifies what a hokey writer nicollato is, and how awful he is at screenwriting and writing dialogue. the dialogue--it's the worst. there is much negative to say about it...too much. the sentences: they're clipped. the attitude......snarky. the jargon? gibberish. it reminds me of someone who really really thinks they're really good at writing livejournals. I attempted to imagine what it'd be like to read the dialogue rather than have it spoken by living people, and I guess the inhuman clunkiness would be easier to overlook. on screen tho it's really awkward and cheesy and it kinda makes it difficult for any of the scenes with prominent dialogue to succeed.

it's not just the dialogue tho. whenever a character gets to exposition or speaking in paragraph, it starts to become clear what a poor grip pizzalo has on the the prose and philosophical shit that was so prominent in season one

there are too many negatives to talk about. but there's good stuff too, it's still good. it's a different level of good, where if it wasn't for season 1 or its popularity and esteem, it wouldn't seem worthwhile critiquing at all. season 1 is good to the point where you can pick it apart and still get somewhere, probably end up liking the show even more.

actually here is one good thing to think about: the lack of mystery. season one was pretty steeped in mystery from the very first episode, and that was major part of why it was so gripping. so far, it seems the intriguing part of the show rests almost solely on the characters, which, despite perfectly fine acting, aren't that interesting to me with how they look and talk like over-the-top comic book characters. actually wait is that the point? that all people in the Los Angeles area are just caricatures of cinema/camp media characters? I guess I'm mostly assuming piccolo sux as a writer-showrunner because I want it to be true. it's just the second episode. I'm gonna see how it plays out.

lol no I completely missed the NCIS true detective part

I don't see it though. I just see an expansion of what they originally did with more character depth but I could be wrong because I missed most of it and just caught the last third of what I'm assuming is the most recent episode.

I fucking hate NCIS

I want to watch "The Last Ship" and "Mr. Robot" too when I get off tomorrow
that's the best way to see any series, the high point of one episode. my fav part of boardwalk empire is still the half of one episode I sorta watched at a friend's place, before I saw any of the rest of the series. it was the episode where richard harrow becomes infatuated with a lady who is nice to him.

there were two episodes by this point, the first one is the one where the PTSD guy was riding his bike and switched off the lights.

they probably aren't meant to be caricatures. but at the end of more than one episode I was genuinely left wondering if it's supposed to be a parody or something. that would be good I guess, but it would also go against the fact that nicky pizza boy is definitely one of the worst writers in television. I'm not sure if that's hyperbole.

a paragraph here about getting 1 (one) female lead (out of 5, across two seasons) and immediately making her defenseless in jeopardy of sexual assault. is there any other way???

bezzerides is a dreamy superhero tho

the cartoons are still good, gang. I should just watch cartoons. I can't believe Steven Universe exists.

I spent a couple weekends ago watching all of Over the Garden Wall. (You can watch it all on Hulu Plus ad-free, or there are probably loads of streams.) Just sat down in the morning and stirred a couple hours later. It's great! The frogs are the best! It's beautiful and silly and frightening, and the music is excellent.

Here's the pilot:

hannibal had its series finale yesterday. it was dropped due to low ratings. the third season was relatively good, though. you know you're watching cheesy tv, but it comes across as far less narcissistic, thus less disastrous than TD s2. the writing is still kinda hammy, but far less hammy than td s2. visually it's superior on all levels to tds2, which is pretty awful for an HBO-budget show. it's kinda nice watching a really gross show that you hate on a certain level but still can enjoy.

oh right, true detective season 2 ended since last post. I was expecting this season to be bad, but it was far worse than I had ever anticipated. it was kinda awful! I guess everyone hates it tho? still saying "generally positive reviews" on wikipedia. I wonder if any reviews would be positive if it wasn't for the hype from season 1, the big names, the network. I'm really sorry guys, bad dramas are not interesting to read or write about. thanks for reading.

LIST OF GOOD SHOWS REVIEWED SO FAR:
-tds1
-mostly everything on cartoon network
-columbo

LIST OF REALLY KINDA OKAY SHOWS:
-hannibal
-rick and morty (currently airing, may review)

LIST OF BAD SHOWS:
-teddy dinky slinky 2
-veep
-uh I didn't watch any of three bare bears but it seems like it might be the first not very good new show on the after-school block of cn in quite a few years

I love Rick and Morty. The precursors made by Justin Roiland were all aired on Dan Harmon's Channel 101 and are worth a watch if you're in to sick comedy. Definitely NSFW stuff.

House of Cosbys, featuring a guy that loves Billy Cosby so much he stole one of his hairs and used it to clone basically an army of Bill Cosbys. Every 10th Cosby has super powers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWUBnrIaphQ

House of Cosbys got a cease and desist, I guess from the Cosby family. Roiland thought it was pretty funny that he got a cease and desist so he created Doc and Mharti to intentionally get a C&D from Back to the Future's copyright holders.
https://vimeo.com/49664066

Somehow The Unmarketables falls in the timeline as well. It looks more recent than the other two shows.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcMFHRXp8xM

Anyway you can really see how all of these shows finally combine to become Rick and Morty. Apparently from what I've gathered (Roiland is fairly active on /r/rickandmorty), Roiland comes up with all the crazy concepts and Dan Harmon tames them into something they're allowed to put on television. The result is a very funny TV show.

Teen Titans Go! has always been good enough, but they've been kicking it into gear lately. They did like a vaporwave thing recently

This is my go-to for "watching TV" now. Whenever I can't think of anything in particular to watch. But, my favorite thing is, every Saturday night around 11PM Eastern they show Daft Punk's Interstella 5555, followed by two Rifftrax movies, a Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie, and then a bunch of Rifftrax shorts. Other than that you can catch episodes of the old Cartoon Network Toonami regulars. DBZ, Sailor Moon, of course. They also play some old Johnny Quest, Scooby Doo, and a some anime like Initial D, Fighting Spirit, Ghost in the Shell, etc etc etc. Check out the schedule, it's a pretty sweet website.

Man, I was either hella stupid (i LOVE flcl) or i was right even then (FLCL fakin stinkz!!) but this time around i'm really cautios and careful and like "mmmhmm" you know... what did i say about it?? i was super simple yet pastoral back in the dayz.

i bet i'd really dislike it these days, i have vague understanding of it + memories and seems like usual teeny anime pixie girl loves nerd boy - shit, ya nou? or idk seems like not even worth lifting a fit. also son goukou is pretty much jesus... like a muscular jesus in concept, right?

anyways whaaaat the hell!!! moaannn, erllll, My Little Budy, what's up.
i recommend checking first episode of Norm MacDonald show if you want disaster.
I also watched Black Dynamite the movie and i expected it gonna be pr bland like the series but seems like the guys REALLY loved their 70's so it was good. i totally expected ironic hipstery attitude or laughing-at-70's - stuff but it sorta did Barkley's there, what with totally self-serious take on everything. also i really really want Cream Corn's hairstyle!!!!

yeah, I remember at one point I was going to make a thread about revisiting shows and movies hukt. I used to really like FLCL, even back when I was too young and tender to like Akira. I watched a youtube clip and thought it was good, but it's been a long time since I watched the whole thing

hey "the bonz". ya you and kaworu didn't like it. iirc it's more tongue-in-cheek about the center of the universe magical nerd anime trope tho

yeah I found the black dynamite show bland when I caught it once. I already have creamed corns hair tho. well, the animated version (see selfie (avie))

Yeah dude Akira is incredible. Sometimes I just watch it for the animation and art style. Darker than Black is another one of those "what the fuck is this show even about" things.

Akira is a masterpiece. I mean the story is kind of simplistic, but in terms of animation, art direction, and tone, it's perfect.

Anime-chat reminds me of when I discovered anime. Technically it started when I watched Ghost in the Shell for the first time with one of my cousins. I think I was about 10 years old, a bit young for the subject matter, but it really blew me away as I had never seen anything like it before. Beautiful animation with complex plot and adult subject matter whaaaaat?!

Later on when I was 12-ish, my sister's boyfriend gave me a VCR tape containing several anime flicks (oh shit ancient technology alert here, this is back in the day when you'd try to record late night Real Sex on HBO to video tape). I remember exactly what was on that tape: Cyber City Oedo 808 (still holds up amazingly well), Samurai Shodown, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D (also great), and..... one more that I can't remember so well (the main character was named Jiro, a snowy arctic landscape was involved somehow, shit now I gotta try to figure this out.) Demon City Shinjuku may have been on there as well, either that or I'm misremembering and saw it sometime later.

wow!!! me and kaworu in the same frontline!! never thought that day would dawn, tho he IS a pretty cool guy... barkley's awsum sewer song was named after him...

ya, u got coolest hair. cream corn in the movie had like this really overblown stylized james brown mop hair too big for the guy, man dats my driim.

re: animeconvo, idk i get the point but i think it speaks more about the economic and creative restrictions on comics and animation in west than quality of anime (or even manga) creatively. none of the anime stories are really mature or spectucalur per say, just very stylized and effective design / scripting / execution - wise. but i dickress... so to not the rain the parade: i like Kaiji anime series, because holy shit at the actual implementation and execution of original manga series & the story is pr mature in several ways. Hunter X Hunter is pr good but i'd say it would be a goldmine to some young gun who isn't yet fucked up on naruto one piece etc shounen shit, but dunno how it'd go down to anyone else. I think it touches several themes from Kaiji series but with less transparently, like sort of serving those ideas slowly besides the hefty doses of fantastical teenage action. like hiding liver within meatballs, to get the kids to eat dat stuff, ya no what im sayin? just sayin. oh and that HxH artist is fucking deadly with esthetics and story constructs, like how all arcs have their own thing going on... one piece has different art styles and influences on every arc but HxH goes a step fruther in a good way.

blah blah blah. I'm pr sure nobody reads manga or watches anime here anyways.  ( : ^ [ )   well... rightfully so.

i dont watch anime but I sure love me some manga, and not even necessarily good manga, either.

Also I haven't found a place to read it, but Dorohedoro is frequently evangelized by the one and only Winter Lake/jchastain and has precisely the perfect, or almost perfect combination of elements in its art that I lust after in manga. (super-finicky high detail/complexity/noise, dirt, sketchiness, high frequency of pipes and (bio)mechanical shit, uniqueness, blood, author's mushroom fixation(??))

My understanding of the series from what people say is that it's a beautifully illustrated, completely incoherent story about nonsense, which afaik is the description of ALL the best manga. All the best... anything?

I also love the low-effort dialogue that manga authors traditionally put in their omake bonus shit like this.
-"I'll curse you!"
-"I'd better run!"
