Whether it was a guess or not, you are basically right! The 3.XX series of windows was the first to use it! Ironically all versions of windows up until windows XP SP2 had a fully functional version of it. SP2 removed the file and put a bunk file that just opened a file browser(which can be replaced with a functioning one). Vista doesn't even have that sadly...

I prefer it since its extremely light on resources. Requires alot less than Explorer.

The only thing I really like about the Mac's interface is the dock, so thats why I have it (seriously its a lifesaver)
