Dedede was a bit of a surprise, I think only because such a mundane character was given right after Sonic. We're all waiting for Ridley, Megaman, Captain Falcon, etc... and no one was expecting Dedede.

I like his move set, espically his Jet Hammer, reminds me of Kirby's hammer charge, which i was always disappointed he didn't have in smash.  Not being able to hold the charge with shield sucks, but walking around with it should be nice, if it doesn't slow him down to much.  Also i wonder if the Waddle guys can be pick up by others or do they continue to do damage?

Nice moves, I was worried he would just be a heavyweight Kirby but it looks like they pulled some moves out of thin air to make him unique.

NEVER!!!!!!11111111

Also Ridley wasn't big in the original NES game, right? ...Anybody?
He wasn't big in the original, nor is he HUGE in any Metroid game excluding the Metroid Prime series, as far as I know.  At best he's twice the height of Samus in any of them, so I think it may be possible for a Ridley character.  I don't know how they'd make Ridley balanced, but they'd probably figure something out.

Dedede's moves are awesome.

As for clones, yeah, I don't want any clones either. We should have a unique Ganondorf (based on his TP appearance) and a unique Falco. MewTwo should be fixed and be in the game because he is 100x cooler than Jigglypuff (as if Jigglypuff is even cool).

Also Jester, characters with less votes than Ridley got to be playable, and I said before Sakurai said he wanted to put some other Metroid rep and what with Ridley getting such high votes...I don't know, his chances seem pretty high. I mean, he got the most votes besides Dedede after all...

To be honest, I think playing as Ridley would be kind of DUMB if anything. I mean, he really sticks out from the rest of the so-far-revealed roster as well.

Nintendo go by their latest models when making SSB characters. Ridley's latest model, the Prime one, is huge. Not as big as Giga Bowser, but as big as Petey Pirahnna, I'd say.

Making him playable would mean retconning him back to his more manageable Metroid size, which would cause a lot of the newer Nintendo fans (ie like half their market) to go WHO THE FUCK IS THAT THAT AINT RIDLEY GRRR

edit: plus, they dont seem to be in the habit of making evil characters playable. Bowser, Dedede and Wario are all just like JERKS but none of them are TRULY EVIL (unless they get possessed in the case of Bowser and Dedede). Ridley really is evil, and I don't see him fitting in the storyline mode at all (RIDLEY DECIDES TO THROW ASIDE OLD HATRED FOR SAMUS TO FIGHT A BUNCH OF ROBOTS yeah ok)

I've been trying to think of ways they could add Ridley & I've come up with a pretty cool idea.
What if they made a Space Pirate a playable character, if you go by they're Prime incarnation where they've used blasters, rockets, laser swords & even jetpacks they definately have enough moves. But for Space Pirate's final smash he calls down Ridley who would be playable for the duration of the final smash.

If thyey have space pirates it could possibly be a Zerio Suit Samus clone which would work for you guys who want to play as her without getting the smash ball.

But yeah I agree with Ridley as a boss and doubt he'll be much more.

I really just don't see anyone being too upset over a slight size change on Ridley. Especially among the japanese, "dramatic scale changes" are more than acceptable--watch any Godzilla movie or mecha series closely and you'll see that. And it's not like the Americans can't understand the concept either, since we did it with King Kong.

As to your "evil guys" concept, what about Ganondorf? Ganondorf isn't just a jerk, he really is evil. And Mewtwo may not be pure evil, per se, he's about as close as you get with a franchise like Pokemon.

This isn't to say that I definitely think Ridley will be in, I just don't know if your arguments are really the reasons he wouldn't be.

I found this image on Gamefaqs a while ago, but I forgot who did it.

Ridley is compact, he can tuck all his limbs closer to his body and reduce his idle size and stretch out when attacking giving him deceptive reach, his wings and tail can always curl around him when he's not attacking with them. If you remember in Metroid Fusion, Ridley's frozen corpse is half the size of Ridley-X when you battle him and in the cutscene in Zero Mission of him perched he is also smaller and compact. So long as they don't make the mistake of making him slow, and heavy it should be ok. Ridley should be lightweight but fast and strong like he is in Prime. He has no shortage of moves to choose from, teeth, claws, wings, firey breath, a sharp tail and projectile weaponry.

If they wanted to use him as a boss there's no need to not make him a playable character as well, they can always make a larger, stronger Ridley, ie Meta-Ridley or Ridley-X for that which could plausibly be cloned by the space pirates or something. Ridley is inconsistent between the Metroid games, his height and colour frequently change and Brawl isn't canon anyway.

Just using Samus to represent Metroid isn't a great idea and Ridley is the most useable non-generic villain in the series. Mother Brain would make a great boss battle only stage, why constrict Ridley to just a boss character?
I'm still not fond of the mechanics of her final smash and selecting ZSS either.

What was today's update?  (at work - dojo blocked).

The problem with the Metroid games is that there is only on hero and PC.  Ridley is really the only other option if they are set on including another character (unless they decide to add some sort of Chozo or Chutzpah or whatever they are).

They just introduced Dedede yesterday, so today they showed us his move set. He has a jump which is cancelable, a move where he randomly pulls out things and throws them, and a charging attack similar to Roy's in SSBM (self-damaging if charged for too long).

That is interesting Severus, but he would be incredibly overpowered considering how agile he supposedly is. Although he IS a huge target which would be easy to attack. Hrmm... I still don't think it could work. He would be better off as a boss, definitely.

They could add one of the other Hunters. That could be interesting.

He's great for a boss, but he works well as a playable character too.
Yeah he would still be big, but he would be lightweight and easier to knock off and combo, I just don't want him to be a combination of Bowser and Mewtwo in terms of vulnerability.

If they want to stay old school, then sure that's really their only options.  Otherwise there are other options like the Metroid Prime Hunters characters or even someone from Corruption. (although I can't see anyone that recent being added)  Otherwise I imagine they could add a GF Trooper or Space Pirate, but then that calls into question of whether Sakurai would introduce a "faceless/nameless" character as part of the roster.

Bah, maybe you're right and just typed up a whole lot of nothing. :P
