what's the difference between electronica and electronic. serious question really

I can't think of anything that hasn't been said already. Vitalic? they're ok I guess, but not as good as some of the other stuff listed imo

Quote
At the very least try the three highlights. I would call those three groups likely the best electronica out there. Amon Tobin and Brian Eno are good too, but everyone recommends them so I tried to give you stuff that isn't as well known. I would highly recommend against Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twin, mainly because those are acts for people who have not experienced much in the way of electronica. Chemical Brothers are alright, but not if you actually want to LIKE electronica. You can't appreciate them without having listened to many other acts. Aphex Twin is garbage, but it is readily accessible for the main stream, so most people have heard him and like to claim they like him so they look like they are WELL VERSED IN MANY TYPES OF MUSIC. I could recommend you some other more accessible electronica like Tiesto, but trance is kind of like the pop of electronica and, again, you can't really appreciate what is good and bad in trance without having listened to lots of electronica. Otherwise you will either think it is AMAZING STUFF when it really isn't or REPETITIVE BULLCRAP when it isn't. I always recommend exploring genres from the bottom up rather than from the top down; that way you get an appreciation for the whole genre rather than just what you can buy at your local music store.
Note: this doesn't mean anything.

Infected Mushroom, notably songs like Disco Mushrooms, Cities of the Future, Viscious Delicious (Viscious Delicious is an awesome dancing tune)
The song Weapons of Massive Distortion from The Crystal Method is rather cool as well.
And although it's not really electronica (actually I have no idea what electronica is and what not) but Goose's Bring It On album is really awesome to dance too as well.

Here's what I listen to:

Aphex Twin
Daft Punk
DJ Tiesto
DJ Shadow
The Postal Service
Ulrich Schnauss
VNV Nation

To be honest though with most Electronica it's better to get compilations instead of albums.

i entirely disagree and i can see that you're not really a fan of electronica which is why you'd say that

I would suggest BunnyMilk, he makes pretty stellar elctro-rock-soul music.

But yeah, if you say "I want some electronica bands here is what I have so far - Depeche Mode." I don't think it is electronica that you are looking for! Also ignore everyone elses opinion because they are wrong. Especially the person who suggested "Peaches," because Peaches is probably the worst human being ever invented by god.

BoC is kind of hard to digest the first time round. If you haven't really been weaned onto electronica by some offshoot of the genre and you stuck in a Boards album it would probably psyche you out a little bit. I am huge Boards fan but even I didn't like it the first time I heard it. I tell you what it was that really put me onto the Boards though and it is something that I suggest everyone does. Flick your TV over to Discovery Central and watch one of those nature shows. Not the shitty ones like Ray Mears. I mean the PROPER ATTENBOROUGH NATURE SHOWS WITH AMAZING SHOTS OF NATURE AND ANIMALS AND STUFF. Mute the volume and stick on a Boards Album... It is probably one of the most fantastic things you could ever do. Also watch the music video for Dayvan Cowboy. It is beautiful.

Amon Tobin is fantastic but all of his albums are seriously different so I think it would be pretty hard for anyone to say CHECK OUT AMON TOBIN and leave it at that. Whatever Album you listen to is considerably different from whatever material you don't listen to. If you are going to check it out I would say start at the beginning. Cujo - Adventures in Foam or Bricolage. If you enjoy these albums you will enjoy Tobin, but if you jump in at the Foley Room it's a lot harder to work backwards.

Massive Attack. This is not electronica, everyone is telling you lies. As fantastic as it is though they are only trying to say HEY I LIKE MASSIVE ATTACK I AM COOL YOU SHOULD LIKE MY MUSIC TASTE.

Daft Punk is a tricky one but probably the closest thing to DEPECHE MODE that you would find on any of the lists people are giving you. It's pretty Techno but it's a lot more down tempo techno. Also be warned that Daft Punk have made a lot of shit music. You're best picking up a best of album or something to see if you like it. Or just listen to "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" which is the song everyone loves. (I am quite partial to Robot Rock myself though.

This is just my opinion on some of the artists that people have already suggested to you. I am not going to give you a list of bands that I think you would like because a lot of them have already been suggested.

If you are just trying to get into electronica I would avoid Aphex Twin and the Chemical Brothers though. They are both absolutely fantastic don't get me wrong but I don't think it's real EASE YOU INTO THE GENRE stuff.

Daft Punk... make shit? idk they only have 3 albums, and it's just one of them (Human After All) that's not up there. (also they did a horrible remix of Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out.)

but uh yeah Depeche Mode are very pop/80s with electronic music
Peaches is just unsexy shit though heh

However I think the Chemical Brothers are pretty accessible. they might not EASE YOU INTO IT (who knows what would) but they're an ok start.
Aphex Twin is not immediately accessible though, of course. however if you also have an interest in experimental music then it might work.

I just think people are suggesting a lot of things that don't really apply to a guy who says "I LIKE DEPECHE MODE." The topic turned into a more "I like to stroke my music tastes cock."

I know he was joking when he plugged his own material but I'm actually going to suggest it. BunnyMilk's music was pretty much my first experience with eletronic music, and while I don't really listen to any eletronic music outside of Amon Tobin and Boards of Canada in addition to BunnyMilk's music I do suggest it as I really enjoy it.

There's links to where you can grab each album here.

(err hope you don't mind me endorsing your work BM?)

Positively Dark, Drifting in Silence and Xenoton all make brilliant music and have it avaliable for a completely free download.

And Pulse by BunnyMilk of course (when're you putting something new out anyway?)
