This year has been fairly weak. I can't really come up with many great movies. But all year there have been movies I've been looking forward too. Too bad none of them exceeeded my expectations. There's been a lot of good movies this year but none really great ones.
I can really only think of
Sunshine as a great film. It was awesome but the end part kinda dragged it down to only great status.
But good films:
Hot Fuzz, dragged down by the fact that it NEVER FUCKING GOT RELEASED UNTIL LAST WEEK WHEN I ALREADY HAD GOT A DVD-RIP A LONG TIME AGO. FUCK.
Grindhouse, it was good, excellent even but dragged down by the fact that it WAS SPLIT IN TWO FUCKING MOVIES FORCING ME TO PAY FOR IT TWICE. FUCK.
28 Weeks Later... this one was great, but there were some things that annoyed me (
such as the whole angle that those bloody Americans would shoot at people that were clearly not infected. I know it was orders but honestly, what kind of a dumb order is that?), it also had such a wonderful beginning that the rest of the film felt weak compared to it.
The Sequels, none of the sequels (I've seen, I didn't see Bourne and I didn't see Ocean's) lived up to the expectations, many of them were very good though, but not great, only above average-good (or perhaps average good because average or below average is usually huge disappointments. These films didn't disappoint but didn't exactly surprise either). I'm talking about Pirates 3, Shrek 3, Harry Potter 5 and Die hard 4. (Die Hard was probably the best of the bunch). I should probalby have included 28 weeks in this list but I thought it was good enough to get its own entry.
The Simpsons Movie, rocked so hard. I watch Simpsons on and off mostly by mistake. This was a great film.
Black Sheep, this had such a short run I missed it. Fortunately I caught it on download. Unfortunately again the film was really good and I wish I had been able to catch it in theatres.
But at the end of the year there are a bunch I'm looking forward to, just like there were a bunch I was looking forward to at the beginning of the year. There always seem to be better films to look forward to than to not...
Stardust, this one was released yesterday over here so I will watch it this week. I'm a huge Gaiman fanboy and I will hope that this will not disappoint too much. It's a lovely fairy-tale and it can go wrong in so many ways. I just hope it doesn't. (I haven't checked very many reviews or "spoilers" so I don't really know the critical reaction. I just hope the film will be good.
Tali-Ihantala 1944, the film I've looked forward to most this year. This year has been so weak in the whole WW2-thing (
Letters from Iwo Jima, which I think counts as last year was pretty darn great though) so it's great to see some Russians getting shot.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tali-Ihantala_1944His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass, I hope it won't bomb. I liked the books.
Films I moderately look forward to (i.e. will probably watch but are not a priority, or have release dates that are 2007 in some parts of the world but probably Fall 2008 over here):
Shoot 'em Up (19.10)
Juno (Might not be this year. EDIT: Found a date. February 2008)
No Country For Old Men (Can't find a release date for this one either so probably May 2008)
3:10 to Yuma (would be in the 2007 list but I just found a
date confiriming it to be in January 2008)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (No date for this one either, not overly interested even if I like westerns)
Ratatouille (19.10)
Hitman (23.11)
Beowulf (23.11, I can bet on that Hitman will be moved a week later or perhaps not released at all because of Beowulf)
Eastern Promises (2.11)
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (probably an August 2008 release)
Sweeney Todd (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrX4SRvxqSM probably September 2008)
Alright, so the list shows that there's always movies to look forward too and not very many to look backwards for...
