Use anime style in their games? I have not found hardly any games here, or fan made period that don't use anime style. And it's not even the more realistic looking anime style, they usually use the overly cartoony, big ass eyes kind of style. What's up with that? I mean, i don't mind it being sort of anime-ish, like final fantasy, y'know, spikey hair, maybe a big sword, or in chrono cross, which is still not full blown anime style. but even in those games, it wasn't really anime-y, more of a blend of real life, anime-esque. My question to you is, why does EVERYONE use a similar style? Not saying all anime looks the same, but most char. art i see in rpg games today is like this:

http://bignanime.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/say-what.jpg

notice the ginormous eyes, which have no outline on them whatsoever.

I don't mind seeing a few games here and there with it, but when every game is made up of character art that rips off toryama, or yoa, and they all look the same, i have to wonder... "is there anyone who DOESN'T draw char. with overly huge eyes, out of proportion clothes and bodies and overly exagerated hair?"

That is indeed a very important question.

I often wonder myself, why anime characters have such large eyes. I personally believe it is the asians way of compensating for their lack of wide-eyes (slanted eyes, often closed......). I mean... it's nice to dream, right? If say, I had very small hands, I would probably draw pictures of people with large hands. Or, for example, Medieve. All of his characters have very large penises. Compensation.

This is just my theory, though.

I'm talking more about people on this forum, who use the same art style in their games, without exploring other styles of anime, or art, period.

And it's no secret that the japanese do indeed like to incorperate things to "compensate" in their toons. In dbgt, the jap version, goku loses his clothes frequently(as a joke, not for perverted reasons, different culture, different humor)his penis is 2 feet long. In a lot of anime, the breasts are ALWAYS double D's, and even in old paintings and art from the meji eras, they had pictures of women with large breasts, because it was seen as a sign of beauty, that and they don't (usually) have large breasts, so, yea. :)

But my point is EVERYONE is using that style in rpgs now, not just the japs. In fact, I'm not at all referring to the japs, who often DO actually explore more realistic styles of anime, in action anime, or in ones more directed at adults. I don't see hardly any FAN GAMES that don't use the simplified, cartoony manga look.

For example, you can find lots of great anime that look like this:

or even more realistic like this:

Notice they're more "eye-shaped as apposed to the aforementioned, and you can get even more realistic... i have yet to find many fan games that try to be more realistic with their look and style...

Come now, is this really an important question.

Rule #1 of the land:

if you put the word "important" in your title, people will read it. ;)

The topic will hopefully make people see, tho, that going for a more realistic style, will not only improve your games a lot, but actually are very important to the theme of the game. Goofy char. don't mesh with a serious story and world, cartoony is great, if it aint serious, if it's a kiddy, immature fantasy, you wouldn't go for more detailed char. you'd go for all, 4-5 feet tall, exagerated clothing, with less detail. Vice versa, you wouldn't opt for a more simplified char. in an action, or serious kind of game. I just can't stand the same style in every game, especially when it doesn't fit. I mean, people don't realize that the style ALSO makes the mood. And every char. in every fangame now looks like they were done by the same person, that's why I think it's important to actually be more "you" and think of what design would truly fit with that game. Cell chamber for example, fun game, but the main char. didn't really feel like he belonged, kept imagining him jumping all over the place firing off energy blasts. Altho the design was taken from somewhere else, and it was a demo, I still think he should've went for a char. that fit the games atmosphere. I kept feeling like he belonged in a dragon ball z cartoon alongside goku.

Actually this is wy most anime characters aren't asian-looking: because they can't be as expressive.

Also mr. odilo 99.99% of amature games won't be using custom graphics, and pretty much the only resources out there are from jRPGs, so yea I think people are just working with what they have.

Also, to be serious because apparently people are running with this:

it's because very few make their own custom resources in the RM* community and a lot of stuff is just anime-style.

True, but I'm sure they can find something that actually fits the game. Again, it's not anime style, its that they don't use the more realistic style, or styled char. if they can't be bothered to make them themselves. Like the above example, you wouldn't put a cutesy char. in a mystery type game with mature themes, you wouldn't put a more plain type char. in an action game, you wouldn't put a goku type char. in a horror type game, and yet, that is what i see being done in each game, only they all use the fantasy, "i'm aimed at kids and young teens" style anime, they don't use more mature anime style, which they could. They don't use what fits, and they rarely, if ever, use realistic styled char. art. And it's not like it's hard to find char. on the web with those styles to edit. Anime has a wide range of styles, and genres to choose from, they can find pretty much any char. to fit whatever game they're making.

this is such a bad topic. i am going to punch some 10 year old later when i realize they're using anime style for their rpg. ughh sorry too young to appreciate Winsor McCay///

yo man, if you like anime and you're  remotely artistic you're probably going to draw that. when you're like, 8 years old and surrounded by whats popular (anime cartoons on tv all day) then of course they are going to draw this kind of stuff man.

Also, even if you don't like anime-style you've got to admit a big-head big-eyed style is going to let you put in more details on the faces and stuff, seeing as the resolution is like 20x20 pixels or something - unless you don't really draw in the faces like the old-school Metal Gear games.
