I've gotten this letter twice now and I wonder what you think of it. Not the chain letter itself of course but what it says.

It basically says that senators don't pay into and don't receive social security because they receive a tax-paid (meaning everyone else pays for it) benefit that continues to pay their FULL salary after they retire. Ok so one, is this even true? Two, what the hell, how long has this been going on? Is there some other side to this that isn't represented in the letter, or are the tax-paying people being genuinely screwed over on this? I figure I'll get some "oh naive american" responses (and I guess I'll deserve it), but I seriously can't believe something this blatant would exist.

Wait wait, I'm not trying to make the chain letter the issue. I am talking about the issue in the letter. I've never heard of it before and I am wondering if it is true or not. If it IS true I am looking for people who would know something about it. If it is NOT true, that would be really nice to know as well.

That doesn't really make any sense. Senators only sit in senate for four year terms, right? True, some get reelected their whole lives, but many get elected once and then lose, or get elected twice then retire, and so on and so forth. If they were getting paid millions of dollars, I sincerely doubt any politician would run for reelection as senator.

In Canada, we pay our senators for doing absolutely nothing. They meet perhaps twice a year to have debates that hold no real power, and we pay their salaries until they die (because it is a lifetime appointment). That is true, and that is complete bullshit. But since US Senators are elected officials, I can't imagine they'd get "salary for life". You would have heard about it from someone.

Yeah, chain letters usually don't contain a shred of truth.
