That AT (Helirin) used to be just and ordinary trophy in Melee.  One of my friends today said that girl in the drill is from a game coming out soon, but I don't remember which one.  Shameless plug, perhaps?

Some guy at smashboards made up a pretty decent review for each character. It seems the Starfox guys, Wolf particularly, are still dominating, along with Marth. Olimar is apparently amazing, too.

I believe she is from a game called Drill Dozer, which was released on the GBA some time ago (I think it was one of the last games to come out for it) They might be coming out with another one, but that one was supposed to be pretty good, made by the people who made Pokemon if I remember right.

I just got back from Smash Club, where I got a chance to play Brawl.  Everyone had a good time playing and just watching people play.  I lost in a 1v1 as Trainer vs Bowser, lost in a 4-player free for all as Sonic, and won a 4-player free for all as Random Character Shriek.  It was very awesome.

Awesome.
Mainly I'm sad because of the comment they made about Falcon slowing down to make room for Sonic. Pretty gay.
Oh well, I guess there's always Lucario and Olimar if he's unusable.

From what I've heard/seen so far, Olimar seems like he can be a really good character. He can chuck pikmin at the opponent for assloads of damage (especially if you get the poison one) and the heavy one sends the enemies flying back quite a lot. However, without pikmin, he is nearly defenseless. I saw him getting smacked around by Kirby hard after he used up all of his pikmin. Luckily though, it takes a second to get all 6 of them back.

He seems like he's a good character but he'll take more skill to be played than most other characters.

Hey guys who realy know about this stuff, I got a couple of questions:

With the tier system, how is that worked out? What things are taken into consideration when ranking the characters? According to the lists posted  on the previous page, I've always gone with low-tier characters. Not that this bothers me at all, I'm just curious. And are these tiers intentionally made, or is it just the result of players studying the characters a lot.

Second, all this wavedashing and l-cancelling and dash-dancing junk. Is it intentionally put in the game, or is it stuff that players have found and now exploit in the game.

I'm just kind of curious about these things. Thanks.

ALSO:
looks like a girl.
Tiers are agreed on by various things, tournament performance, the characters' general matchups (done by comparing matches in a fixed environment (Final Destination, 1v1, no items, 4 stocks, 6 minutes limit)) and the theory surrounding said characters. It's a pretty involved process and most tier lists in most games are not to be taken lightly because they're usually right. Tier lists mostly show what tournament results will end up like usually, but it's not always set in stone (such as Wobbles winning EVO East with Ice Climbers). It doesn't mean low tiers are dreadful and that you should never use them, it just means that in a tournament environment, you have less chances of winning against people of a similar skill level to yourself that are using higher tiered characters. It's all statistics and you can sometimes beat the odds, but it's the exception rather than the rule.

Wavedashing, L-Cancelling and such are a kind of weird thing. Wavedashing is an obvious oversight, it's done by cancelling your jump with a quick air dodge, which will make your landing gain some "moving" properties and then cancelling that landing again with another wavedash or an attack, since you didn't attack in the first part, you don't have any lag to attack again. L-Cancelling, Dashdancing and ledgehopping have been known since SSB64 and have been put in SSBM and SSBB willingly, tho they did try to "fix" these things, they're still very potent. But you should never be ashamed to use something that's in the game, bugs or not. CvS2 has roll cancelling and you can't really hope to win tournaments if you can't do it, and that's a glitch too, so why would Smash be any different.

From the uk.youtube brawlers videos, I'd say Pit is looking pretty good. Very fast attacks, multiple jumps, and versatile long range (you can shoot straight up, and curve the arrows flight pattern),

His recovery is insane. I saw him get knocked under the stage by Meta Knight (just barely still staying alive) and he managed to get back up from underneath it. I think it's in this vid:

But yeah, people have been saying he's easily one of the best characters in the game. Top tier material.

Holy crap, that's an insane recovery! How many jumps does he have, like 6? And a recovery that equals like 6 more jumps.

Also, that Meta Knight player is damn good. Easily the best so far. Light is supposedly the best Pit also.

Ahah. Prediction: Metaknight's Whirlwind of Blades (idk what it's called) will be the new Link's Up+B. Seriously, it's even more cheap the Link's Up+B. The guy playing Metaknight (who is very good) could have spammed the attack in no time right after using it, while Pit was still recovering from it in the first place.

EDIT:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeMEkOqMaKE&feature=related 0:38 Metaknight can apparently face forward and attack forward or backwards.

It's important to note that tiers seem to be created in the "tournament environment" - Final Destination, no items (correct me if I'm wrong).  But this tournament environment unbalances the characters.  For example, I often played as Pikachu in melee who has a great advantage with items and platform jumping.  But in the tournament environment, his weaknesses are emphasized while his advantages can't be used.  It looks like MetaKnight would have similar problems in a tournament environment since he would have a hard time KOing someone without items or a teammate.

this is not fair, it looked like metaknight was outplaying pit but pit just wouldnt die and when they were having aerial battles in the middle of nowhere pit was usually the one who could make it back to the edge and metaknight couldnt. eitherways, holy shit.

That's not even funny. That's just wrong. I know they did it on purpose, but damn.
Anyway, it looks to me that MetaKnight doesn't have too much knock-back ability. Is it just me?

The people that are saying that MetaKnight is great at causing damage but not so great at delivering KO attacks.

True, he might not have a powerful attack to KO perse, but he does have speed and multiple jumps. I have a good feeling that once he knocks someone off the arena he will be able to keep them off easily by jumping out after them and slashing them further away (except Pit, I still can't get over his recovery move). You can see how effective this can be by watching one of the videos Sarhan posted (again against someone with multiple jumps like Pit, it could be a problem).

Actually, it's the other way around. Items had a random element that cannot be defined and gives an unfair and unexpected advantage to anyone who happens to be closer to them when they spawn. It doesn't matter if your character can KO with items or get to platforms faster, fact of the matter is that those characters still can't get a clean KO by themselves.

Also you have to realize that any character who is higher tiered will be even stronger with access to items. Sure, Pikachu gets from awful to not-too-bad if a baseball bat spawns besides him, but in contrast, Marth goes from too good to nigh-unbeatable.

With a baseball bat? I'd just chunk it at the enemy. Hell I'd chunk almost any item I picked up at the enemy for the long range. If Marth used the baseball bat as a weapon, I'm pretty sure his attack range would be shorter and his Forward+A would take too long leaving him wide open to attacks.

EDIT: Oops, but I get your point. Anyone who gets his hands on an item will have an added advantage and what-not.
