Fairly obvious question here folks, I've some promising things about it but after they broke my heart the third time I've kinda moved on and I personally don't have high hopes.

Rick Rubin also produced the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Mars Volta's best albums! As well as several fantastic albums by Johnny Cash.

Now, he's also produced a lot of shit, but to claim he's not talented is pretty lol

Yeah this is kind of how I feel. I know that he's produced a lot of terrible albums, but also a lot of good albums as well. Obviously, it's ultimately the band itself that makes the album good or bad. I'm kind of curious just how "true to form" some of these songs are. I'd rather not the band try to be something it was 20 years ago for the sake of being liked by larger fan bases again

Didn't he start off by producing albums by Slayer etc?

He also produced a lot of system's albums. I think metallica need a bit of guidance on this album. I can see that they tried to change their ways on st anger, but the unit of metallica, just don't get along. They need someone like Rick Rubin as a producer to tell them if something's shit or not

edit: also by calling Linkin park's new album a progressive record he meant progressive to the bands discography.

i.e. They have dropped the rapping and have progressed to a different sound.

Reign in Blood says it all. That album is a masterpiece! So I don't doubt Rick Rubin's skills at all. Even if Justin Timberlake isn't your favourite music, does that make his production bad? I don't think so.

But yeah, this will be interesting. I for one prefered the pre-Bob Rock producing, and it seems Rick Rubin is more along the lines of pre-Black Album producers than Bob Rock was.

But yeah, Metallica are being pretty gay with the whole Rock Band thing but we'll see...... We'll see...

thanks wash cycle i'm glad you pointed out how his misconceptions of genre definitions somehow have any relation whatsoever with his ability to produce an album

im really really hoping its good, but i think its kind of arrogant that before it was even done hetfield said it was going to be better then the black album...i dont know about metallica anymore, they seem to be way too high on fame to have any sort of connection with the common man, or even one of their fans.

Of course he's going to try separate linkin park from their older nu metal stuff because nu metal is a stale dead genre and if he didn't attempt to rebrand them as a different genre then their newer records wouldnt sell.

...sounds pretty promising. I just wonder whether there'll be too much Black Album and not enough ...And Justice for All.

Until I hear otherwise legitimately and not just from a drummer friend of Lars I am going to have to say it will be bad, given Metallica's escapades of the last decade.

But, I'm not giving up hope on it. Just being realistic for the moment.

If Lars is playing without a click and no ProTools... am I the only one thinking it's gonna be very crappy drum tracks hahaha? That drum sound on St-Anger was terrible. For the new album, we'll see. But I wouldn't listen to what the guys form the band say, they seem completely disconnected
