Sorry to request assistance on this matter so soon after I join, but I'm afraid I won't be able to become a respected member of the community if I cannot access the forums.

Recently, the notebook computer I've been using for a little over a year has stopped detecting the wireless internet within my household.  all other computers can still connect normally.  under normal circumstances, I can navigate to 'Network Connections' to see whether the wireless is connected; if it is disconnected, it says so under 'wireless connection'.  however, now there is no option for wireless connection on the list.  what could be the cause of this?

Thanks in advance.

It could be a driver problem. Does the device show up properly in device manager? (control panel/system/hardware/device manager)
Try uninstalling the drivers for the device, and downloading the latest ones from the company's website.

Also, if the device is disabled/enabled from a keyboard shortcut, you may want to give that a shot.

I just restarted the computer, and the wireless internet is being detected now. A few hours from now it'll probably cut out again. Restarting the computer does not usually solve the problem.

It is being detected now, but I'll have to check again whenenver it cuts out again.

There is a button near the keyboard of my computer that controls the wireless, I've already checked that.  When the device isn't working, the light accompaning the button doesn't change color when pressed, as it normally should.  Furthermore, when I would press the button before, the WLAN would read "off" on my computer's start bar.  When the device isn't working, the WLAN icon doesn't appear at all.

Thank you for the help so far, goat.

This may be a long shot, but my father had a similar problem at his home.  His laptop would drop the wireless internet connection all the time, for no explained reason.  There was some sort of incompatiblity between his laptop and the Windows Wireless Connection manager.  His computer came with it's one wireless connection manager, so I set it to use that instead of the Windows one, and now he has a perfect connection all the time.  I don't know if this relates to your problem, but perhaps it could?

I've been having a similar problem with my laptop, actually. When I get back to my place, I'll take a look at my computer, and when I fix it, I'll let you know the details. Alternatively, if the solutions above fix my problem, I'll let you know that as well.

Check in device manager to see if "allow this device to turn off to conserve power" is unchecked (if that option is even available).

Also, are you using Windows Zero Configuration for the router, or the manufacturer's? It sounds like you're using the windows zero configuration, so i would disable the other one from restarting. If you still have a problem, try the reverse.
Untick the checkmark that allows windows to control your wireless settings, by right clicking on the connection in 'network connections' and going to properties.

I've usually had better luck with the connection software that comes with the card over WZC.

I just noticed a factor that may be critical to solving this case: the device stops working whenever I view Matroska (.mkv) files.  as far as I am aware, this is the only time it becomes defective.  I've viewed .mkv files before this without anything bad happening.

Thanks for all the help so far.  For further information, I'm using HP Wireless Assistant.  There is no 'allow this device... power' option.  I updated the drivers, as suggested.  I cannot find any way to switch to Windows Zero Configuration in the device properties.

Thanks again, and good luck with your laptop Perpetual Moogle.

Edit: recently happened without viewing a .mkv

Windows Zero Configuration has to be started from services if it's not already on.

http://www.inf.aber.ac.uk/advisory/faq/965/

That site should show you what method to do so on whatever version of windows you're on.
Remember to turn off the HP wireless assistant before you do.
