Recognizing numbers in four-tenths or two-tenths of a second =/= intelligence

Interesting point: what exactly constitutes "intelligence"?  DISCUSS

I think this is pretty wicked actually. I had no idea that chimps could even be taught things like numerical order, let alone that they could understand a test like this. How did they train them? Classical conditioning? This seems to be a little too complex a task to be the result of a mere trial-and-error, carrot-and-stick methodology. How does one communicate abstract concepts to chimpanzees?

Someone mentioned Planet of the Apes... I'm scared it'll come true.

In the 4th film (or something like that), the little ape is so cute and they teach him stuff, and what happens? he evolves, starts a rebellion and soon mankind is reduced to a bunch of slaves!

Kill the ape while you can!!

Sensory input was rather tested than 'smartness' or short-term memory (although short-term memory is of course a prerestique to being able to take the test). When the pictures were shown for a bit longer and the brain had the time to process the image completely, humans and apes were able to score equally well.

But as any psychonaut knows, human consciousness has A LOT of filters. The subconsciousness is capable of much more than the preconscious or the coscious, and that's maybe where apes succeed; there's less of a gap between these.

I was actually watching a demonstration this morning on CNN or something.

They're not smarter (as in more intelligent) but they have better memories... which makes sense.  As you get older, your memory tends to get weaker for whatever reason.

But yeah, don't owe a chimp any money because "A chimp never forgets."

smart doesn't have the same meaning as intelligent

Intelligence is based on knowledge
Smart is a good ability to process information

The study was also done on a young chimp and adults, that creates a huge difference in mental age and alertness. Im not sure but if apes/chimps/monkeys live the same or similar life span of a human then shouldn't you test against a equivalent age for more accurate results, and do grouped age tests instead of just adults have two males and two females of both species at different ages for multiple tests... that would produce a more accurate result. If then they said that the primates had better cognative abilities then I would believe it.

It's a matter of iconic memory ability.  That is, how quickly we can process visual information.  For humans it's about 1 second to fully process info.

There also need to be motivation for good performance.  It's likely that the chimps were reinforced  on a typical VI schedule on something like that.  Same tests to get pigeons to peck at a screen.

Thing is, people, chimps, pigeons all have the same capacity for processing visual information.  it's just a matter of motivation.  Deprive the people of food, and make the reward a cheeseburger, see who wins.

Well I was thinking about this before in Philo class, hearing is probably a less evolved sense or something or at least it's more designed for instinctive reactions. Like if you hear someone yelling or a gunshot or something you'd probably react right away but some visual stuff might produce a slower reaction. Like not realizing two people are fighting for real at first even though you're seeing it, I guess.

It was from a statement that he made to his lawyer that he had on a few occasions hit the dog because it was barking too much or that it was doing something that he didn't want it to do at the time.  Also had said this wasn't the first dog he had that had some sort of abuse from himself.

Bringing me back to my original point, if he hadn't been caught he wouldn't have felt sorry. And another thing, why was he bringing the dog to a animal shelter rather than an animal clinic where it could recover... that makes me wonder what he really was thinking.

Hearing is a more evolved sense.  Language is actually dependent on the evolution of hearing.  Otherwise we'd be speaking in less complex sounds like ugh and oo.  No seriously people can hold info in the echoic sensory register from 1-5 seconds.  A gunshot or some loud noise is going to effect both humans and chimps.

I wouldn't say that chimps are actually smarter than humans, but they're definitely not stupid either.  I gotta admit they do have pretty good memory.  They probably beat these college kids due more to memory and mimicry than actual intelligence though.

I think it's pretty amazing how well that Chimp did (trained or not)... almost scary in a way.
It's hilarious how he used the ticket correctly in the end.

this video is extremely misleading. everybody knows that japanese monkeys are much smarter than american monkeys

also i think the only reason why people are the slightest bit interested in monkey intellect is because christians are so damn annoying and anything to prove them wrong is a major moral victory

What I want to know is, can we book those chimps? I've got seventeen washed-up actors in line to host the game show.

capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings, etc.
