I am gonna get a graphics card soon, but I don't know which one to get. My machine is kind of old. It only has PCI(NOT PCI Express) slots and a single AGP 1x/2x/4x slot. From what I read though, most 8x cards will work in a 4x slot though(they say they are 4x as well on the box). The thing is that I don't know squat about which one to get. I was considering getting a Geforce 6800, as while it isn't the latest and greatest, it appears it should work on my set up(I say appears as some places say it has PCI Express support). For a non PCI Express system, is the geforce 6800 decent or is there something better?

The geforce 7 series is the highest you'll see in AGP, but you'll see enough improvement by getting a 6 series. So yea, a geforce 6800 sounds perfect.

You can get one of the new Radeon HD2600XT. Search it on Newegg, find the AGP version. I paid $112 + s/h.

Upgrading the motherboard usually means a new CPU with it. On the flip side, if he got a PCI 6800, it wouldn't be very different from the AGP version running at 4x, would work with more older motherboards, and it could be transferred to a PCIe mobo you may get in the future (because they wont have agp, and youll be able to use your PCI card till you can afford a good PCIe card further down the road)
