I personally do think that the games were simply better to me back then. I'm saying this from a very subjective viewpoint; I'm not saying that games were better back then, but that they were better to me.

I've been working at a design studio for two years now, and I believe there are parallels between graphic design and video games from that time (as I mentioned before, it's largely the 90s in PC gaming I'm talking about here). I believe that game developers from back then were able to put in their own style in a much stronger sense than today. I'm not arguing that this is entirely untrue nowadays, or that this is strongly correlated with technological advances in the field, but rather that there seems to have been a change in attitude that's unappealing to me. Games simply have changed.

And also to clear something else up (this post is starting to sound very apologetic), I'm not a supporter of the "scratchware manifesto". I don't see how restricting game development teams to a maximum of three individuals is going to help. It's not going to bring us back to that era of games, even if such a thing gained mainstream support.

Well games were pretty awesome back then because they had art direction instead of photorealistic pant ripples and refractive sweatdrops.

Basically when a new Castlevania game comes out, I play it. Sometimes I play an old SNES game. That's it. It's not really that I'm uninterested in games, it's just that like Dada said, they're not quite the same these days. I still like almost any well known game released in the 90's more than any recent "big hit".

I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY VIDEO GAMESS!!!

The problem is my life sucks, I don't have money (yet) and I just bought a ps2 for the very first time in my entire life I can finally play some games. I only played a few games and that was like 10-12 years ago and I was still borrowing my Uncle's Ps1 at that time ;_;

I swear, once I get out of college and have a life and work, I'll play video games and keep updated all the time. For now I'm a sucky casual gamer that hasn't even played 98% of the world's greatest games :shady:

Where is the 'I'm obsessed with gaming but do not follow/rarely follow the news of gaming' option?

You should send a few of the best ones over to me.  :naughty:

Pick and choose.

I just sorta throw games and DVD's randomly on the shelf...

This doesn't even account for all the older games like the Jaguar, 3DO, Saturn, MegaCD, several different commodores and Amigas, as well as that MSX home console thing;  I keep those stuffed in a closet because there's no room.  I took this picture last week for "insurance" purposes but I added Koudelka and every Shadow Hearts game to the collection since then.

25 years of gaming and still going strong.  I still play roughly 30 hours+ per week and spend a bit of time online checking the different game sites for the latest news.
Gaming World Mini City: Population, Industry, Transportation, Security Current rank 3950.

My interest in video games has always been pretty strong, but I would have to say my interest in consoles is fading. For mostly the same reason, money. Theres a few games on each console I'd like to play, but the PC is my choice. I just pay for hardware and most games come free, thanks to ruthless software piracy :gwa:

So you're the reason Crysis only sold 80,000 units last month but it seems like everyone is talking about it!

I'm glad I didn't pay for it. It was over hyped. The gameplay doesn't bring much new to the table. Graphics are indisputably nice though.

Crysis was my fave game of last year, despite only being marginly longer than HL2Ep2, because it did allow a great deal of change in gameplay (it was very much a do what you want kinda game so if you didn't experience anything really new, that's more to do with how you play as opposed to the game :/). Plus the special edition's metal tin is very pretty.
but bleahg. I have more and more become a major hardcore PC gamer, clocking up about 12 hours a day when not at work. It's something I very much don't wanna do, but I have nothing else and it's better than reality, so why not?
Kinda funny as last year I was losing interest but now I do nothing other than game unfortunately.

This seems like the general consensus on every major video game release these days :(  I haven't played Crysis, and I'm almost absolutely positive that it was overhyped and not really that interesting, because I wasn't very impressed by its spiritual prequel (Farcry).  However I think that its sales figures compared to its overall mindshare is an absolute tragedy -- a quick visit to any more torrent site shows tens of thousands of seeders online at any given moment.  I wouldn't be surprised if Crysis has earned the dubious distinction of being the most-injured-by-piracy video game ever published.

You need an option which says PREFERS GAMING OVER FOOD OR SLEEP... I started playing games when i was around 5, but i was a bit late to the party... for example- I was playing SMB 3 on  the Nes when the playstation 1 was released. I got my first PS1 about 3 years after the PS2 was released, and I got my PS2 around a year later. Don't have a next gen console yet.

I wouldn't be surprised either. I would venture to guess that a lot more people that average downloaded it it merely to see if it would run on their system, or just to see what it looked like. And even their demo which was supposed to address a majority of those people had bad multi-core support, and NO sli support, making the most resource intensive game even harder to run well. This game must have also pushed many many people to upgrade, who after doing so don't didn't feel like paying for the game after (and especially not from hearing of how short it is/nominal the gameplay is).

'I'm pretty interested in games and in the gaming culture.'

I'd consider myself a pretty big gamer considering my knowledge of, and how much time I pour into games compared to most people. Like most people here, I'm sure. But... this next-gen wave, I'm not as enthusiastic about as I was about PSX and PS2 etc., probably because I'm not as young anymore, yeah. Next-gen consoles unfortunately aren't compatible with the 'rose-tinted spectacles' peripheral. Obviously there are some good games, for instance I really enjoyed Enchanted Arms on PS3 (also 360), but it's hard to get as excited/fanatical about it all, let alone buy as much as I still buy PS2 games (but I suppose the price also influences that, heh).

So yeah, I don't really keep totally up to date with all the latest news etc. But wouldn't call myself a 'casual gamer'.

I felt the same way about the previous console era right up until the end of it (specifically, Playstation 2).  However, I am extremely interested in PS3 and 360 games, and my gaming hobby has been completely rejeuvenated.

If Anything Crysis was pretty under-hyped (compared to actually how good the game is), and got blown out of the water by a piece of shit  (Call of Duty 4) which has had constant hype all year round (HEY WE HAVE RESKINNED NAZIS INTO SANDNIGGERS AREN'T WE SO MODERN!?!?!) and is one of the most boring FPS games in recent years (Medal of Honour Airbourne is like 500X better than CoD4 NO KIDDING). Plus PC Gamers have had a major drain previously what with World in Conflict, Orange Box and Bioshock (this also caused abysmal sales for ET: Quake Wars and UT3 (though admitedly UT3 deserves poor sales))Whilst it was hurt by downloads, it was hardely a substantial damage compared to the other factors, such as yeah... the hardware issues. Personally I think they could have easily waited a year before releasing crysis (it it would still be enough to blow people away), and lots more people would be able to play it.

Man you know you're a saddo game freak loser when you spend your time reading articles about GAME SALES FIGURES as opposed to reading about the games ;_;

I'm casual. When I have an hour or so kill, I'll play a game. I buy only like, one or two games a year. I only get what I KNOW I'm going to like.

Except for Rule of the Rose... I tried to like it, but it sucked so hard so early.

I listen to podcasts while at work or commuting to/from work, and there are several popular videogame podcasts that go through monthly sales figures as a footnote so SHUT UP
