Someone brought me their old computer to see if I can fix it, and this is what it does:

- When windows 98 is loading, at some point it stops and says

Error Reading Data on Drive C. Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?

MS-Dos works OK, but scandisk says it found an error and freezes at 7%. The HD is an ancient one, larger than the HDs from the present.
I thought about formatting the HD and then re-installing Win98.

How can I fix that?

Sounds like data is corrupted. Try to reinstall, but chances are the hard drive is dead.

It's not dead, MS-DOS still works and I can see what files are inside it. One time a HD I had died, and it just wouldn't work at all, the computer wouldn't even recognize it.

Corrupt data, maybe? I'd just format and re-install. It might be a faulty hdd too. You could try installing win98 over the current version, running the setup executable from dos but I doubt it'll solve the problem.

Reformatting will let you know whether the drive is dead or not. If you reinstall and everything is fine then something got corrupted. If not, your drive is dead yo.
yes coulombs are "germaine", did you learn that word at talk like a dick school?
