Thanks to downloadable games on consoles I think many people are becoming aware that just because a game wasn't made by EA, Sega, Ubisoft, or some other huge company, doesn't mean that it's not worth playing. I think the biggest problem people face when it comes to finding games from indie developers is figuring out what's actually good. For every game that's awesome there are a dozen that are horrific (Though some might argue that the same goes for retail games, but that's another discussion). I won't say that we as a site are great about getting the word out, but we do host a fair amount of mods and free games, and we're encouraged to feature them when we're so inclined on the staff soapbox page. I know one of our guys, Lark, wrote a whole editorial on his favorite indie games of last year and I devoted an entire hour-long video to Beggar Prince, the Genesis game that got released last year. The short version: I think coverage is improving, but could still get better.
