I just finished it. Extremely satisfying experience, and leaves me hungering for more! When is the next chapter planned for?
It was easily the best homebrew rpg I ever played. Big props to you guys. WELL PLAYED, WELL PLAYED INDEED.

Only thing is, I didnt really know how to backtrack in the game. For instance, after fighting the bball monster, I realized I didn't search the whole dungeon there yet, and I couldn't get back after entering the sewers... Theres quite a few points in the game where that happens. Its sort of frustrating when you end up reaching the boss room before searching everything, so its sort of impossible to find everything on the first playthrough (unless youre lucky and always stumble upon the boss after finding everything else)

But thinking about it, thats something I find in lots of commercial rpgs too.

this is good to hear from a fellow "GAME MACKER" user. i am not doing chapter two, chef and bort will be doing it but they are making something else first (i think).

also you can't backtrack. this was done for a bunch of reasons, mainly MORE WORK since if you kill a boss or something people would still have the same lines and also we didn't think many people would care.

aah yeah I understand. And messages saying "if you enter here now there is no going back" before every boss would have prolly felt redundant too.

I'm not posting it on the myspace until the trailer is up, like you guys asked, but I remembered the account information for the myspace. If you guys want it or something, just message me.

next are you guys going to make a football(fifa gaiden) or american football rpg(madden gaiden).

you guys should make a game about someone who walks from town to town selling watches except the people who buy these watches can also travel through time using the watches and as the salesman your job is to not get killed by these people who are obviously trying to kill you because of a faulty second hand

also my hosting is always available if you need it

The one thing I would suggest you guys (whoever is in charge of music or programming) fix is to make the music loop better. For most of the soundtrack, I can hear that annoying 1 second pause in between repititions of a song that seems to have been carried over from RM2k3.

Also some dudes at SA seem to be having a major bug at the title screen before they can even start playing, so check in to that!

Awesome job so far. I haven't gotten to a plot point that I havent played through before, but so far everything is prefect.

I'm not sure where else to turn, but Barkley Shut up and Jam: Gaiden will not work on my PC. When I load up the title Screen, everything is off center, and when I select Start New Season, the game hangs.  I noticed an error log shows up if the game errors out and this is what it contains
ERROR in

action number 1

of  Step Event

for object oIntror4:

Error in code at line 1:

   image_alpha=min(1,image_alpha+(reveal/60));

at position 32: Unknown variable reveal

ERROR in

action number 1

of  Step Event

for object oIntror6:

Error in code at line 1:

   image_alpha=min(1,image_alpha+(reveal/30));

at position 32: Unknown variable reveal

ERROR in

action number 1

of Draw Event

for object oIntror2:

Error in code at line 1:

   if (ll>=ww) { draw_sprite(ss,0,x,y); exit; }

at position 9: Unknown variable ww

Not sure if this will help anyone, but dammit, I want to Slam with the Best, not Jam like the rest.

I just beat the game for the first time and I have to say, it was really impressive. Not only because it was really hilarious and the dialogue was amazing but because it was actually a lot of fun to play and you guys really managed to make it something really enjoyable. The battle system was really nice and even though the game was mostly easy, it never got boring. The game had a lot of great ideas and I laughed at many parts and this is definitely the best amateur RPG I have played. Everything about it was so good and you guys have done amazing job. I can't wait for next chapter.

I agree with ASE about the music though. Music was great looping could be improved. I noticed a few typoes as well but I didn't write them up or anything so when I play it through next time, I can report them.

I thought i commented on this already... I guess not!

I'm probably like an hour in and so far it's great. Too be honest the whole story and stuff isn't really interesting to me, HOWEVER the dialogue is hilarious and it keeps me going. I think the music so far is fantastic which is a big bonus for me. Not to sound like a broken record but the loop thing... Yeah.

I think the best aspect for me was the smoothness. Man, this game is so smooth on so many levels. I would love to do something with ya GZ (I think?).

Btw, I actually liked the story... I think it's because the story is really cool and seem serious enough and all. But, the quirky (funny :D) dialogue kind of makes it feel like a big joke at the same time.

I know that's probably what you were going for of course :D. Still, it's a great game and I'll be continuing this until I finish it.

i'm a little bit bummed that i can't play this, as both the version bort gave me earlier in the week and this one have the same odd bug that a lot of others are experiencing.  but still, judging from the demo, the trailer, and the obvious, this is a really big deal and probably the best rpg that has hit the community in a while (perhaps ever???).  it's not just because you managed to swap out the lame stories 98% of games have with a well-written and pretty humorous absurd satire thing, but also because apparently the move to gamemaker has turned it from a boring rm2k game serving as a vessel for hilarious writing to a functioning rpg that probably plays a lot better than most amateur games put out as well.  i am.......... how you say...... legitimately happy for you guys for having managed to make such a well-written, solid-playing game out of what i in all honesty assumed for quite some time was a funny concept that none of you would have the patience to carry through an entire game while keeping it good.  in fact i am definitely having feelings that i can only say BEAR A RESEMBLANCE TO PRIDE here so good job guys!

I must say that the best thing about Barkely isn't the battles, the music, the level design etc but it's how you created such a coherent world. Everything has a history and a reason and a purpose. It isn't just ITS THERE OH YAY, everything is explained and given a meaning. This is something most professional games even lack, and shows that a huge amount of thought went into barkely to create such a believable world.

hey Tales of Game's do you guys have an official Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden Player's Guide Book or 1-800 Tip Line available because I am currently nearly done replaying the game a second time and I still have yet to find any library cards or secret hell levels and I am stumped (I am but a rookie slamsmaster...) and since there is no backtracking I do not feel like replaying the game another couple more times right away.

edit: also is there a point to the or was it just a joke? Am I missing something here or am I reading too much into this sidequest?
i couldnt figure out anything either, im pretty sure its just a joke

in the same vein: early in the game, in the sewers near doctor furry's lab place, there's a locked door and the dude next to it says "i hear the button for this is in the tomb of someguyicantrememberthenameof" now when you
