5. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles (GEN)
Best. Platformer. Ever. The music rocks. The stages are long and exciting. The difficulty is challenging, but not impossible. Replayability is high.

4. Sokoban (Multiple Implementations)
I have spent literally hours on a single puzzle. The puzzles have distinct, emergent rules which adds this bizarre depth to each level. The most fun you will have pushing blocks onto spaces.

3. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
This game specifically played to the JRPG's strengths of character development and cinematic storylines, and was rather successful. The gameplay is surprisingly non-intrusive and fun.

2. Pygmalion (Z-Machine)
The conversations I have had with this game have often been more interesting than some I have had with humans. Amazing depth.

1. NetHack (POSIX and a few ports)
Unprecedented non-procedural depth. Comparisons would have to invoke multi-million dollar commercial products like Oblivion and Fallout. Gameplay is interesting, challenging, and captivating.

1. Nethack - The deepest, most complex, replayable, and truly challenging game that has ever been made. I've spent more time playing this than the other 4 games on my list combined.
2. System Shock 2 - One of the most complex and atmospheric first person shooters ever made. SHODAN is probably my favourite video game villain of all time.
3. Quake 2 - This is the game that got me into gaming, probably the most intense and action packed first person shooter I've ever played.
4. Half Life - An absolutely unforgettable game. So many great moments, who could forget when you first started fighting the soldiers?
5. Touhou 10: Mountain of Faith - Dodging lots of bullets, AND beatiful anme pictures. Absolutely addictive.

Honourable Mentions: Fatal Frame and Oddworld.

Also major high fives to the guys who said Planescape, No One Lives Forever, and Jagged Alliance.

(No particular order, also, if there's more than one from the same series, I count it as one)

Final Fantasy VI/VII/X
-Gotta show some love to VI (my first FF), VII (a true classic) and X (my favorite story-wise).

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete/Eternal Blue Complete
-My two absolute favorite RPGs (maybe even games) of all time

Super Mario World
-BEST. MARIO. EVER.  Introduced Yoshi, and had the most memorable Mario music of all time...I'm humming it as we speak...

Chrono Trigger
-One of the greatest SNES RPGs of all time.  And that says a lot coming from a console with dozens of great ones.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
-The first video game I truly loved...Still stands as excellent, even today.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
Lufia
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Eathbound
Super Mario 64/Galaxy
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Final Fantasy Tactics
Sonic 3 and Knuckles/Sonic Adventure 2 BATTLE
Wild ARMS
Contra/Contra III: The Alien Wars/Contra IV
Star Fox 64
Paper Mario

In no particular order:

Super Smash Bros. Melee (I suspect that Brawl will be a favorite soon as well)
Shadow of the Colossus
Final Fantasy Tactics
Brave Fencer Musashi
Chrono Trigger

Hrm, I probably forgot something awesome but oh well.

FFVI is truely amazing.  And Super Mario World is the best Mario ever...next to Super Mario Bros. 3.  SMW is freaking awesome, but SMB3 just had an unparallel ...impact.  After experiencing SMB3, SMW felt more like a retread.

Oh, and the original Super Mario Bros. wins for most memorable theme.  "DO Do do, dodo di do..."

Oh, and I fixed this for you:
Chrono Trigger
-One of the greatest SNES RPGs of all time.

GOD HAND
Cave Story
La-Mulana
Planescape: Torment
Ikaruga

GOD HAND is #1, but the rest are in no particular order.
Anyway... I played a bit of this... And I'm not so fond of the setting. I hate that whole ghetto "gangsta fo life" thing, and I've never been much of a baseball player.

In no order:

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Shadow of the Colossus
Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike
Chrono  Trigger
Bioshock

I tried to pick a fairly different type of game per choice, all ranking up in my favourites. Some honourable mentions that I just couldn't justify putting up there include Guitar Hero, Rock Band, most Zelda Games, Halo 3, Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8, 10.

Note that my top 2 switch places a lot... because I'll never be able to decide which is better.  It's impossible.

1. Lunar: Eternal Blue
2. Lunar: Silver Star Story
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
5. Guilty Gear XX

Man I am getting so sick of typing in my top five favorite games and explaining why.  I think that I should just keep a text file and paste it whenever this stuff comes up at forums because it does every month or so.

I tend to list games that require no explanation.

I mean, Super Mario Bros. 3.  What more needs to be said?

Oh man, I was just thinking about this.  My ultimate, number 1 game of all time is Bubble Bobble, followed closely by The Magic of Scheherazade.  Both for NES!  I've always wanted to make a homebrew sequel/remake of The Magic of Scheherazade.  I can't tell you the amount of my young life I wasted playing either of those games.

When is the last time you played an RPG with both Zeldaesque action-RPG elements/on-screen fighting AND complex turn-based battles?  I mean really.
