- Lightning Bolt:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7BDZ7KyNRE

This vid of Lightning Bolt is so rad. I think there's a longer one of that Halloween show somewhere on Youtube, I remember someone commenting they had to stop halfway because they thought the floor was gonna cave in.

I enjoy Xiu Xiu's Fabulous Muscles and A Promise but I can see where some people would hugely dislike it (and their live show too). Sonic Youth too is an essential here, it's really amazing to go through some of the best of their discography and listen to all of the different shit they've done but still maintain that SY touch.

Quote
and Slint is indie/post-rock shit, not noise (unless that second album was noise, I heard it sucked and never bothered with it).

Wait, second album? The second album was Spiderland which was definitely not noise. I am guessing you are referring to Tweez, since their final EP after Spiderland too wasn't really NOISE either I don't think.

Retarded like a FOX!
Seriously, it it actually possible to be more retarded than metal? Isn't that like having a number which is smaller than minus infinity, or a movie that's shittier than 'Cheaper By The Dozen'?

Also, 'Genuine Lulabelle' is just as weird as the vocal cast suggests... Like Captain Beefheart reading the blurb from a porn movie...
everything I've seen you post is so pretentious :(

I'm not going to pretend to have more scene cred than yall but I've liked stuff by big black for a while, so I'll look into this NOIZE PUNK sooner or later. thanks for the links, this makes it much easier!!

I am so sure that you mentioned Lightning Bolt in that objectively horrible bands topic and I said fuck no and now you saying they are amazing.

not so objectively horrible were they...

also, i have not heard most of these bands but i like sonic youth, lightning bolt, boredoms and shellac. i have downloaded a lot of music recently and i still have a lot of artists i want to check out but i will check out those youtube videos and maybe i'll find something interesting!
FFFFFFFFFFFGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHAAAAAARRR

why did you come to this topic to say that? it's called trolling and that was just dumb as fuck.

yeah, I didn't really like Lightning Bolt at first, but then I got more of their albums, and I am in love <3333333

also steel I don't know who gave you ska, I had a phase where I liked ska, but that's long gone

The main reason I don't enjoy most Punk is it just seems really samey. In terms of vocals, drum beats and riffs specificially.
I think the closest thing to punk I like is Violent Femmes. I'll give this stuff a try though.

I'm a big fan of many of the bands that have been listed here. I adore Sonic Youth (who I saw over the summer), Big Black, Shellac, Rapeman, James Chance and the Contortions (though noise rock?)....list goes on really. I've seen Shellac a few times and even passed the band in a hallway as they were walking through. I smiled and nodded at Steve Albini and he gave me the dirtiest look I've ever seen. They're such an incredible live act though. The whole thing they have going on is really funny. They're music is really full of in-jokes and stuff, but the live show was so hilarious, one of the most flat out entertaining bands I've ever seen.

Also to the pile of band names I'll add Liars. Whilst their first record is kind of NYC dance-punky (though much noisier than other bands linked to that scene tend to get) and their last record is kind of garage rockey the middle two They Were Wrong So We Drowned and Drum's Not Dead are all drones, noise, feedback squall, tribal drums and sinister chanting. Awesomeo. Let's also add early Butthole Surfers because, well, they're the Butthole Surfers.

melt banana

yes definately...also Mammatus and Earthless are amazing....though they're more on the noise side than the punk side.

Flower Travelling band's Satori is a great noise jam album.

Weren't the Flower Travelling band that psychedelic Japanese group? I think I saw a picture of them once riding motorcycles naked down a highway...

I smiled and nodded at Steve Albini and he gave me the dirtiest look I've ever seen.
Haha, awesome...

noise rock / punk / math rock / what the fuck ever has become one of my favorite genres recently.

most of those bands are pretty good, except wolf eyes and the flying luttenbachers imo. wolf eyes got boring after a few listens and the flying luttenbachers i just couldn't get into (too hard to listen to???).

as for bands to check out (namedroplol) that are sort of close to the genre:

holy smokes - talk to your kids about gangs
wizardzz - hidden city of taurmond
hella - hold your horse is, the devil isn't red
the usaisamonster - tasheyana compost

those albums are pretty cool

Quick question, what's everyone's favorite Lightning Bolt album. Or what's a good starting point.

...you know that's not how you define shit. not by BENEFITS.

benefit from metal: increased production of B vitamins.

stoner rock is a different genre from noise rock, sorry if you missed this?

NOTHING.

are you fucking drunk? seriously, I am asking. I didn't say they are BETTER, but this topic is about noise/punk and guess what stoner is neither noise-punk, noise, or punk. it is none of these!

also check this shit out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoner_rock

I searched for noise and...nothing came up!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flower_Travellin_Band

same here! same with punk!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_music

nothing about stoner music here, although punk pops up when talking about DIY.

how did this happen...maybe it's because they are very very different genres and they don't sound the same at all? and that there was never any favoritism at all considering I like my share of stoner rock but did not bring it up in this topic because it's not about stoner rock?

BravoSector, if you want the punkest noise, just listen to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.
That's noise.
And it probably is Lou Reed's punkest album, over VU's White Heat/White Light.

Great noise bands include Acid Mothers Temple, Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine. But to me, they aren't really punk. AMT is some sort of cosmic meltdown inferno, Spacemen 3 is noise rock, My Bloody Valentine is dream noise or noise pop.
Yo La Tengo is also noise pop.
Tim Hecker is ambience noise. And so is Birchville Cat Motel.

Wolf Eyes is more like scene noise to me. Very pretentious. Like The Locust or most shitty derivation from sceney screamo bands.
Melt Banana is also another pointless noise, screeching, stupidly fast hypernoise.
But that is more to hardcore than to punk.

As for stoner rock, I always think of Queens of the Stone Age. That's not noise, that's plain pure heavy rock. I never heard Girls Against Boys being called stoner rock but I think they could fall in that category. (I guess they are just called post-hardcore simply because it was a Brendan Canty(fugazi drummer) side proyect, whatever).

Check out THE CATALYST:   http://www.myspace.com/thecatalyst

I've been listening to these guys for a while now, and they're pretty rancid sounding.  Their music is heavy and incorporates lots of scratching and feedback, plus their vocalist sounds straight up disgusted.  With songs like This Bike Is A Gravity Bong and Smoke Crack Worship Satan, you can't go wrong...
keep posting...

Quick question, what's everyone's favorite Lightning Bolt album. Or what's a good starting point.

'Wonderful Rainbow' is probably their best album...The 'Dracula Mountain' song from the youtube video is on it, as well as other awesome tracks like 'Assassins', 'On Fire' and 'Duel In The Deep'..

Wolf Eyes is more like scene noise to me. Very pretentious. Like The Locust or most shitty derivation from sceney screamo bands.
Melt Banana is also another pointless noise, screeching, stupidly fast hypernoise.
But that is more to hardcore than to punk.

I always find it weird when people talk about noise bands being 'sceney'... Maybe in America, but over here in Europe you couldn't get a less cool type of music if you tried. In fact, the main reason noise-punk is so good is the fact that it never gets too self-important and stuck up its own ass, unlike certain other, more 'hip' bands (cough cough, Cold War Kids, cough cough). I mean, having snotty hipster kids play wilfully abrasive noise can be annoying, but it's still heaps better than having them quoting Chaucer and making twee songs about punctuation.

Yeah, Wonderful Rainbow is my favorite by Lightning Bolt, but I only have it and Hypermagic Mountain. Both are great albums.

My favorite song is probably 2 Towers though. Awesome song.
