Hey, kids! Be the first on your block to discover the myriad thrills and wonders within the strange and ass-kicking world of NOISE-PUNK, widely considered by anyone with a smidgeon of taste and more than three brain cells to be the only genre remaining which is worth giving two fucks about! The confrontational and abrasive noise patented by no-wave bands like Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and DNA, played in a sloppy and violent Stooges-esque manner!
Enclosed are a bevy of videos so that the uninitiated among you can quickly and easily immerse yourselves into this great music... THRILL to the metallic, gnarled riffs of Shellac's 'Watch Song'! GASP at Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt as he plays drums like Animal from the Muppets on speed! GAZE IN AWE at Wolf Eyes, who meld minimalist electronic noise to hard-rock dynamics! All this and many more... just follow the links!

yeah okay you are quickly becoming my fav. new members :)

I've never been a fan of Wolf Eyes for some reason, and also I thought the Boredoms were JUST noise.

also Oxbow kicks ass, as does Big Black. haven't heard Birthday Party or some of the others on this list but thanks!

now lets talk about Songs for Fucking.

Hey, I aim to please.
Songs About Fucking was awesome, but I'm an Atomiser man... I'd never heard any of their stuff before, but when I stuck it on for the first time and heard that untouchable fucking opening run of 'Jordan, Minnesota', 'Passing Complexion', 'Big Money' and especially 'Kerosene'... Jesus, it felt like I'd been belted in the face with a claw hammer...
Anyway, if you like Big Black then you should check out Steve Albini's second band, Rapeman. It's him and the bassist and drummer from Scratch Acid, and they do a killer verion of ZZ Top's 'Just Got Paid'. What's not to like there?

I was never as big a fan of Shellac as Big Black but I skipped Rapeman entirely. What's a good release by them (according to wikipedia they don't have much)?

I like how Steve Albini is apparently an unbearable music dick who hates anything digital. he's cool as shit.

I also picked up this group called the Grey Daturas out of Australia which is more noise shit but it sounds like that Sunn(O(((( or whatever but not as gay droney so maybe it's noise punk (dont know genres lol) that I recommend to anyone who is into noise.

maybe it's...post-noise...

ps: the chances of this topic being just you and me name dropping for maybe a few more posts before it drops off forever is very high ~magic 8 ball

'Two Nuns And A Pack Mule' on CD collects their sole album and the excellent 'Budd' e.p... As far as I know, that's their entire recorded output...

melt banana
slint
arab on radar
an albatross
xiu xiu

also dare I say............,,.,., SONIC YOUTH!?!

Melt Banana are awesome, Arab On Radar are cool, Xiu Xiu are a bit too poppy from what I've heard... And Sonic Youth fucking rule!

Also, a lot of the stuff from Load Records is pretty good. You can find some free MP3s on their website here: http://www.loadrecords.com/sounds.html
I'd recommend listening to Brainbombs, Vaz, Pink And Brown, and ESPECIALLY the Hospitals. Their album 'I Visited The Island Of Jocks And Jazz' has been rocking my world for some time now...

ugh, I cannot stand Xiu Xiu. I saw them in concert, and they brought this ridiculously loud drum machine and all the indie kids were like "YES...I APPRECIATE HARSH NOISES" and it was so fucking irritating. maybe I had some earplugs it would have helped, but I've never liked them much.

I have never viewed Sonic Youth as noisey, until Panda said it last night, which threw me off. and Slint is indie/post-rock shit, not noise (unless that second album was noise, I heard it sucked and never bothered with it).

also Melt Banana is good which reminds me...

Sonic Youth's first two albums 'Confusion Is Sex' and 'Bad Dream Rising' are really noisy... They kinda got more streamlined after that, while still managing to remain awesome...

Speaking of which, this thread couldn't be complete without a shout-out to the prototype for noise-punk, No Wave.

- DNA:

- Glenn Branca:

haha, there's a thread in SA about this shit RIGHT NOW and

Quote
what the fuck is steve albini even talking about anymore

strongbad is on his new album

the song "Genuine Lulabelle" off the newest shellac album features the trailer-voice "in a world gone mad..." guy, strongbad, and the dude who was "linda blair's voice coach for the exorcist".

also someone got my opinion of Shellac down:

Quote
shellac was a great singles band but i can never get through an entire LP and i think i have a pretty high tolerance for smug anger

At Action Park is way good tho.

Retarded like a FOX!
Seriously, it it actually possible to be more retarded than metal? Isn't that like having a number which is smaller than minus infinity, or a movie that's shittier than 'Cheaper By The Dozen'?

Also, 'Genuine Lulabelle' is just as weird as the vocal cast suggests... Like Captain Beefheart reading the blurb from a porn movie...

first, Punk and Metal are NOTHING alike, so there's no family tree going on here.

Punk is more politically active than metal. Metal is more... fictional.
and honestly I think metal is really retarded
