Not to join in some genre war or anything, but I'm familiar with all but a couple of the bands mentioned in this thread and I've never heard the term noise-punk in my life.  Most of these bands/artists usually fall under the banner of either noise, noise rock, or art rock, although plenty of other genres are represented as well (Branca and Chatham are more often than not, in my experience, considered classical).  I'm not arguing against "noise-punk," but I'm just saying for those of you who were unaware of such a term, that doesn't mean much.

It seems like this thread is really more about the wide range of rock-oriented music that is popular right now, but isn't metal and isn't quite mainstream (basically what's popular among 'underground' or 'experimental' crowds).  A lot of it is good music but it's far from unknown and it's all readily available online.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the term he's looking for is noise rock. Noise already has much of the "punk attitude", just with less traditional instrumentation.

Who said this?

I listen many songwriters who arent technical.
Well obviously I'm exaggerating, but some of the things you said earlier were pretty blunt.

I thought Lou Reed's MMM was just a joke, like he was asked to record for a major label, and that's what he came up with.
keep posting...

MMM is a FUCK YOU at the major label because he had to complete his contract with the major label. That's why it is punk, it is the punk spirit in its meanest sense.
I dont think Lou sees the record as a joke, but surely considers it a record to be hold with tongs. He even states that whoever listens to the whole album in one listening is a madman.

Bravosector you aren't far off when you described me.
Thing is, punk is too oftenly misunderstood as a genre when it is but an attitude. The punk attitude can fit any style of music.
MMM is pretty much the epitome of punk in my opinion, even though it is not a DIY record. There's Fugazi or Shellac for that. But Fugazi ain't no stereotyped punk rock band, no no. Yet still punk as fuck for all it represents.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think noise-punk (whatever the hell it is) is the same as noise-rock, noise, or art-rock... 'Noise-rock' always brings to mind stuff like industrial music, math-rock and post-rock, and I always felt that kinda stuff was a lot more starchy and intellectual than the current crop of noisey bands... 'Noise' just means, well, pure noise, whereas many of these bands have some form of melody/structure going on... And 'art-rock' has been used so often it's lost all meaning, just like the term 'indie': It's been applied to everything from Franz Ferdinand to the Flaming Lips...

I know it's just a semantic thing, but stilll... If you want to use a more well-defined term, "pigfuck" and "scuzz-rock" would probably be a better choice, referring to stuff like Butthole Surfers, Big Black, Pussy Galore, etc...

Also, I think Lou Reed is actually touring MMM again with some noise band...

yeah I read an article in which this band told Lou that they could actually play MMM live, and he couldn't believe it. I dunno what happened with that, whether Lou decided to gig MMM with that band or not

Yep, it happened all right, there was a DVD of it out a while ago... Some band called Zeitkratzer played it live in Berlin with Lou on guitar...

I've always considered Melt Banana to be the archetype of 'noise rock.'  They're the first band the term brings to my mind.  I tend to think of noise rock as music using rock instrumentation (in a recognizable way) to make noise, whereas my idea of noise tends to be more electronically-oriented without any particular instrumentation.  This is general, of course, but Slint, for instance, is not nearly abrasive enough (on Spiderland at least) for me to consider them anywhere near a genre containing the word 'noise'; they're pretty comfortably post-rock.  Slint's sort've my archetype for 'post-rock,' so 'noise rock' doesn't really conjure up many post-rock bands to me.

As you said, though, semantics.  I just meant to point out that other terms that people may be more familiar with can and usually do describe these musicians pretty well, not that this one doesn't either (although personally I don't really see the use for it).

EDIT:  I agree about 'art rock,' though, although I couldn't imagine it being used to describe Franz Ferdinand.  I think nine times out of ten it's interchangeable with 'post-rock.'

I may have not said this in this topic and it was on IRC, but I said the same thing and like their early EP is very noisey apparently, which is what people are referring to.

I didn't even know the term noise rock before reading this thread, but from what everyone here is describing I think I like some of it.

MOTHERFUCK ME I didn't mention mclusky. They were angry Welsh trio who played noise-influenced punk and rock. All 3 of their albums were produced by Albini, too. Shame they broke up, because they were so fucking good.

Damn straight! They also wrote what are probably the greatest opening lines ever: "All of your friends are cunts/your mother is a ball-point pen thief"...

man shep you are really acting like a snob/pretentious person. its prolly just the way you write but giving something like Metal Machine Music artistic value and defending it on the basis of punk attitude and message is pretty much the definition of pretentious, which really makes sense knowing that you like Zappa (and Beefheart perhaps?)

hey you know what else is shit?? modern art

now this topic is really going places
