Deep Labyrinth came out about a year ago but it has been flamed ALOT. Like soul calibur legends though, it peaked my interust so i played it. Here is a player review from the first-person dungeon crawling RPG Deep Labyrinth.

Story: The game features 2 stories, one story exclusive to the DS and another from the Cell Phone version. The exclusive version pits you as the role of a whiney kid who's parent's get sucked into a fantasy world and him and his dog plunge on in to go find them. The other story is about a man who gets trapped in a labyrinth and must save his girlfriend who is imprisioned inside a crystal. Both stories are not so complex, but will keep you playing.

Gameplay: This game will probably remind you of other first person RPGs like lands of lore or the elder scroll series. You use the directional pad to move and the toutch screen to do combat. While it seems to know what it is doing, it can sometimes get aggrivaiting and can be a bit clunky. Spell casting is creative but very tedious. You tap the spell icon on the toutch screen to bring the spell grid up wheres you draw symbols to cast spells, much like lost magic. Some spells are easy to draw but some others demand you to draw the exact symbol making you go on the menu and checking what it looks like. Also sometimes it is too annoying to use in battle as you might get assulted while you draw your spell. Tapping the sheild icon will draw your sheild which works pretty well in defense, and tapping the item icon will have you use an item which works reletively well too. Controls aside, you will be traversing big complex mazes riddled with traps, monsters, and treasure. You save your game via a gay talking rat faggot, i really don't like him too much. Overall the gameplay is pretty decent but can be tedious sometimes rather then fun.

Presentation: Graphic-wise, this game looks great. Chritics and players complain about blockish and dull dungeons and areas but i think they are only half right. While some areas look dull, there are a couple of beautiful areas too. For example, the outside looks great on a DS and is pretty wide open, the Volcanic areas are great looking yet dangerous, and a couple of areas dont fail to impress. Monsters look great too, very well detailed bosses bring the DS's graphic abilities to the peak sometimes. Unfortunantly these good things are countered with bad things like the blocky-bland areas and some of the spells look flat and un-detailed.

Overall: Deep Labyrinth is a decent dungeon crawler with a couple of nice sights. If you want a extremely detailed and indepth dungeon crawler, you probably will be dissapointed. Others who want an elder scrolls like experience with a ton of gameplay time (both stories will probably take 20 hours adding up to 40) you will have a good time.

7.3/10

Aww look at the man eating crab :3, KILL IT >:3

Monster models are very well detailed and some are even shiney!

Spell casting is creative but you won't always get good results from it

Nice review.  I really wanted to give this one a try when I saw it on the shelf, but by the time I decided upon it a deluge of pretty good DS games hit and I never got around to it.  Now I can't even find it. (same goes for Puzzle Quest)  Is it the only game like this on the DS though?  If I can't find it I'm pretty open to alternatives anyway.

Blech.  Couldn't stand this game.  I bought it anyway because Atlus game = instant rare title but it's a really boring poor man's version of Kings Field which is already a pretty boring title.  I played it for about an hour and decided that there are better dungeon crawlers to play... like Etrian Odyssey.

fun fact: it's actually a remake of a Japanese cell phone game.  The extra story (the kiddy story) is just original fluff material.

I agree with this!!!

Etrian Odyssey was what I thought Deep Labyrinth was going to be when I bought it. Etrian Odyssey is a rock solid old school dungeon crawler. Deep Labyrinth.. looks like a cell phone game.

I actually really love King's Field games because they are so sublimely atmospheric, lonely, and claustrophobic.  The Truth Mirror item that you invariably acquire in each entry adds a lot of backstory to the world because it gives a concise but detailed description of anything you point it at -- I think that was really my favorite part of the game.  I don't think many people give the games a fair shake because they are really cool when you get into them.  The movement and turning is just way too sluggish though.

I'm really bummed that they continue to make King's Field games that I cannot play because they do not get localized.  There is a sequel on PS2 and two sequels on PSP and probably a PS3 game coming out.

I enjoyed King's Field (except for the bad spinoff Eternal Rings or whatever) but they start off infinitesimally boring until about midway through the game when all the cool items and spells are obtained.  I just wanted to use it as an example of how this game is just... god.  It doesn't even get better near the end.  The locations in King's Field were actually pretty unique and varied but this game is just

LEVEL 1: grassy field
LEVEL 2: grassy field
LEVEL 3: maybe a different shade of grassy field!!

I understand it's a DS game and everything, but there's absolutely no connection with you, the player, or the world you're in.  The same could be said about Etrian Odyssey but that game is pretty well balanced for an RPG and you get to map the levels which is really nothing special but making the player feel in control is one of the oldest and simplest methods of keeping his interest.

I may pick this up.  Orcs and Elves kept me somewhat occupied for about 3 hours, I'd like to fill the FPRPG gap yet again.  Something to do when I'm not sitting in front of Oblivion.

I don't want too be a dick but infinitesimal means "infinitely small".  It's the opposite of "infinite".  I made that mistake once in a situation where it actually mattered so I wanted to give you a heads up.

But yeah, this review is decent and I'm glad that you like the game, darkjak, but it looks really bad to me and I'm still not convinced it's any good!

No man. If you want an FPRPG then for god's sake buy Etrian Odyssey before you buy this.

I installed this ridiculous auto-word plugin for my web browser and it's so fucking annoying because it auto-fills in the exact opposite of what I want to say.

 :shocking:

You're right.  After checking this out, I must have this game.  My heart, soul, and indeed my loins practically yearn for this game.  It's gorgeous!  :woop:

i rented this game from gamefly and played it until i beat the first story. i enjoyed it alot. i was very impressed with the visuals given the lack of truly 3d titles the ds has to offer thus far.

not like this some paid endorsement or whatever, but if you've been thinking about joining gamefly, do it. it doesnt cost much, and if you are the kind of person to beat a game in two weeks and never play it again it's perfect. Instead of paying 60 for a game to sit on your shelf after you beat it in a matter of a few days, return it and get another game.

i never found that game too good :\
mainly for the fact that, sure it has gorgeous 3D environments from a 1st person but the fighting is all too similar to an RPGMXP game or Dragon Quest, it should have its own unique system, atleast be in real time :O
i refuse to call it a true real time FPRPG till it gets real hardcore realtime battles

Generally real first-person RPG fans will always tell you that turn-based combat is what defines a "true" first-person RPG; especially dungeon crawlers, which is what this looks like.  Hacking and slashing in first person is always extremely imprecise and leaves very little room for player skill -- after playing three or four games like that, you really start to wish that you could just strategize and take turns in battle.  But I guess you probably haven't played many first-person RPGs other than Oblivion so you don't really know what's what.
