Night movie. For those that don't know, M. Night Shyamalan is the director of The Sixth Sense, and Signs. It stars Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel. It's also worth noting that this is Shyamalan's first R rated movie.

Quote from: Wikipedia's plot premise
The Happening is a paranormal thriller in which a family must survive a global environmental crisis. The film will portray the earth's plants unleashing airborne neurotoxins that cause only people living in the US to commit violent suicide. Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel star as an estranged couple who must escape this apocalyptic epidemic.

The official release date is June 13th.

I don't know about this one. His movies have been getting progressively worse, so he doesn't have a very good track record. But the trailer makes this one look decent. Although, the premise from Wikipedia doesn't sound very good. So yeah, don't know what to think.

I really liked Lady in the Water. It was dumb as hell but I thought it was an enjoyable movie. I think the kid was a terrible actor and I liked the way he had the Rodriguez guy body building only one half of his body. The Sixth sense was a great film and I remember really enjoying it the first time I watched it. Unbreakable was cool. Signs was boring and the village I didn't even bother watching.

Judging by the way his films have been progressing I think this is one to wait for DVD for me.

Are you kidding, personally I think it's crazy overrated now with the dvd release and shit. Still, I love that movie to death.

This, I'm not so sure what to think. I really liked it when the construction workers started to jump off, but other than that it seems pretty "meh" or average. I love Shyamalan's work, so I have no doubt that this won't be an entertaining as hell experience. I have faith, this will be great.

I think we have found the movie that Hell will play at its cinemas.

I mean seriously, M. Night Shyalaman and a "global environmental catastrophe" could only result in something much more horrible than a recorded PowerPoint presentation.

I'm an M. Knight fan so I'll be definetely seeing this.. but then again, I LOVED The Village. I still don't fully understand why so many people hate that film. Was it the advertising, or the hype, or what? I went into it without much foreknowledge and I was impressed by the story told and its emotional execution, and how quickly it managed to change what it was partway through.

The premise of this definetely sounds interesting.

EDIT: Looks like the trailer is being pulled from various sites due to copyright claims... Here's a place where the trailer is still up: http://the-happening--trailer.blogspot.com/2008/02/happening-trailer.html

I also like M. Night Shyamalan. I find his movies at least watchable. I'm drawn into them even though they might have a half-handed twist. I loved Sixth Sense and Signs, found Unbreakable decent, enjoyed The Village (why did people hate this?) but found Lady in the Water rather ridiculous. I like Marky Mark and Zooey Deschanel so I guess I'll be seeing this also.

I haven't seen it since I saw it in theaters, so it's possible I might think differently if I saw it again, but I just hated the ending. Like, with Sixth Sense, it built up to the twist, and there were a lot of subtle hints peppered throughout that added to it. But most importantly, the story didn't depend solely on the twist. It was a complete story without the twist ending.

Whereas the twist in The Village was a prime example of a deus ex machina. Only way it could have been more sudden and out of place is if it was all a dream or something. It felt like the movie was made just to have a twist, and that ruined the whole experience for me.

Also, thanks for the new link, Mat. I put it in the original post.

The Happening is such a great title, it sounds like it was translated literally from a Chinese expression or something

His next movie is just going to be called THE THING IN THE PLACE. Or maybe OCCURRENCE

Edit: EVENT

Edit: Also how do you make tension out of a movie like that, I mean I saw some Bruce Willis wannabe cocking a gun like he was all LET'S ROCK is that just because everyone who hasn't killed themself is rioting or are people murdering each other for no reason too

The Sixth Sense was pretty good. Unbreakable was just awesome. Signs wasn't well thought-out, but I still liked it. The Village was amazing, but I'm probably biased because it had one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a movie. Lady in the Water was unbelievably stupid and lacked any common sense.

The only thing that got me interested in The Happening was the mention of some people driving on a highway while every car around them is driven by a suicidal maniac. If that scene is executed well, then this might turn out all right.

The trailer didn't inspire any confidence in the film, if the plot wasn't already incredibly farfetched (global epidemic version of the flu in which people kill themselves) while Mark Wahlberg runs around with his family in true fear of the ongoings. Where's the tension coming from? Probably balancing itself on the audience's reactions? Or maybe Wahlberg trying to stop his kids from killing themselves.

That knitting needle to the head moment just didn't sit well with me (I am very picky when it comes to trailers) plus the final shot of Wahlberg DRAMATICALLY TURNING TO THE CAMERA was just so horrible I had to watch it over and over again.

So yeah, not really jumping out of my seat for this one, but I guess if it turns out semi-decent I'll borrow it from a friend.

THEY'RE WERE ALL GHOSTS ALL ALONG!

Shyamalan's shit. His first two movies are shit if you remove the twists. He just shits out an hour of filler just so he can get his wee twist in there. Lady in the Water was just shit all round.
