So I just barely got my new harddrive for the PC I've been working on for awhile now. It SHOULD be able to run a decent, stable OS. Yeah hah hah. Much to my dismay, I found out that SuSE Linux 9.2 doesn't support SATA harddrives. MORE to my dismay, the cheapest version of Windows on Newegg is around 89$(USD). Plus with that theres no knowing if it even has SATA support anyhow. I say this mainly because at the computer store I work at, I have to use a special SATA disc(Written in sharpie on the disc label of course) to install windows on machines using RAID and/or SATA. The only alternative I can think of right now is to buy a Clean Windows Install FROM the store I work at. Its 85$ and its the professional version of XP. Well thats great and all but my computer fund is lacking right now. Personally, I don't want to spend any more money at the moment.
I have a CDR/CDRW and a couple of CDRW Discs right now.

Suggestions?(Besides ones that require money)

What in the world makes you think that a widely used operating system like SuSE doesn't support SATA drives?

Because it DOESN'T
Look, I'm pretty sure I installed my drive right because I checked my cmos and it came up on the list with exact specifications.
Also, I hope that widely used part is sarcasm.

AFAIK SuSe 9.2 doesn't support SATA, unless they have a patch.  Perhaps try a different distro?

Quote from http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread98915.html

"...SATA support is present in most modern Linux distros. It's actually dependent on the kernel; theoretically any distro would work provided you compiled SATA support into the kernel. And some distros' default kernels may not include SATA support, but often if you poke around, you'll find they include alternative kernels that do support it."

Hopefully you can find if it came with an alternate SATA compatable kernel.

Wait.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait.

I made that comment because I was sure I was right. But Linux still doesn't support SATA by fucking default? Do the devs have any idea what goddamn year it is? This is why we can't have nice things.

I uh... Actually have the boxed profesional version straight from Novell(Yay Novell!) so is there some way I'd be able to swap kernels without having to download the whole distro? I'm perfectly fine with tons of disc swapping.

The way the quote worded it, you might have an alternate kernal on the OS, and if not you might have to download the whole distro. :(

Yeah I checked the whole disc out. Nothing.
I'd figured as much. I'm thinking about ordering openSuSE right now(59.99 USD) Ouch D:. In any case, I've been digging through some LIVE Distros I got as hand me downs from an old tech friend of mine... Lindows! The Affordable Choice!... Not the free one D:. I'm either going to find some way to get some SATA drivers loaded into the installs ramdisk or end up doing it the expensive way D:. I hate the latter of the two choices but so far, none of the other distros I've tried have SATA support either. Sadly enough, they're all from 2003-2004. I'd download a distro but I want something reliable and boxed. And well... My internet connection fucking sucks. It'd cut out after about 200 MBS. Thus is the dillemma.

Do you have any other hard disks?  Could you install the OS one one and download the driver then just move it to the SATA?

Maybe you could borrow someones windows CD just long enough to install the OS and download the SATA drivers (even unregistered will let you use windows for 30 days before deactivation).
