Avoiding pyros is lesson 1 in the school of being a spy.

Being stupid with the flamethrower is lesson 1 in the school of being a pyro.

actually...it's not. You fly around spewing flame everywhere then everyone knows where you are. Playing a pyro is VERY VERY similar to playing a spy, it's all about sneaking around and 'backstabbing'. With a flamethower.

Learn the secrets of side-stab, the wonders of revolver sniping, the ways of sap n stab and/or stab n sap and learn to ignore stuff that will never succeed like trying to destroy a sentry nest when there is 2 or more engies around and most of all PATIENCE.

Yeah, I don't think being high really makes you play any worse. Sometimes I even play better.

Being drunk and playing is asking for trouble though.

I played a few full rounds as spy yesterday and I'm kinda starting to 'get it'. There's just little rules I have to make myself follow and I got a few backstabs and plenty of saps which was very satisfying. Does anyone play spy as primary nowadays?

I hate the spy, I think it's because I really need to learn how to use him efficiently. As it stands now, I can't backstab for jack shit. I probably play mostly as the soldier, engineer, and sniper equally. I also like the scout, and sometimes the demoman and heavy. I rarely use medic, spy, and pyro. When I 'can' backstab as spy, it's very satisfying since the enemy doesn't even see it coming.

Yeah I've been doing that. Not the past few days, since my net's capped, but recently. I'm getting the hang of it and having lots of fun.

Also part of my trouble when plying drunk was that I tried to snipe and just could not see. But I was spying high and ruling so...

Spy is largely skill based, but there's a good portion of the element of luck to the class as well. Here are some efficient spy tips that anybody who has at least 20 hours in the class already knows:

- Like the scout, always aim for taking the seldom used paths on maps instead of weaving through enemy fire (because of this though you will often run into lone scouts).
- Whenever possible swing at the enemy with the knife from a bit of a distance to get the quick stab animation instead of the long backstab. It is many times faster and has a greater reach.
- Become a revolver pro. If you're spotted, backpeddal with it for practice instead of cloaking instantly.
- Cloaking is best used and saved for getting behind an enemy and uncloaking while pursuing them, or cloaking right after a backstab. Try not to use all your cloak getting behind enemy lines.
- Remember that stabbing an enemy in the head or even from their feet (below) counts as a backstab.
- Don't ever cloak and escape into deep water. The enemy can see your air bubbles, giving away your position
- Almost any disguise can have a use in certain situations, even bad ones. Regardless, at least avoid disguising as soldier or heavy.
- Disguising as a scout is a dead giveaway to anybody who sees you at mid-range, but the scout disguise has the smallest hitbox making it more difficult to hit you, and is somewhat harder to judge at close and long range.
- Sniper rifle aside, the revolver is the second-most accurate hitscan weapon in the game at long range and has little falloff compared to pistols or shotguns. Sometimes that's enough to pull an enemy away from their post to pursue you, wasting their time

I don't really have anything else to say other than that for spy. Once you're pro, you can easily break a number of these suggestions and get away with it, but before you can break any rule you gotta know it first...

I tried playing TF2 with a bunch of mates yesterday and it's really hard to get back into after L4D. I used to play this 30+ hours/2 weeks, but I couldn't play for more than an hour without getting bored silly :(

Also the best disguise I find is demoman. For some reason I used to be able to do games for well over an hour solely using demoman disguise and nobody would ever suspect me, except the other demomen (whose name I probably had). GENERALLY the 'best' disguise is either the class that makes up the majority of the enemy team, or one that 'fits' in the location of where you are. For example, sniper/engineer at the 'back' of the base, demoman/pyro in corridor, pyro/soldier if there's a medic nearby you want to laugh at etc etc.

Yeah, scouts and heavies are terrible choices due to move speed + lack of minigun, but don't forget medic either. If you can't heal people as medic (and they WILL be staring right at you) they will just shoot you.

Scout is a great disguise, I use it a lot. I use it just as often as a demo or pyro cloak. Nobody really checks scout first, because they assume you're attacking the enemy base. Plus, if you're a spy, you should only be seen by the enemy team for a few brief seconds. Stand around too long, and of course you're going to get spotted no matter what. With scout though, it's harder for them to determine if you're actually a scout or not. That brief hesitation is all you need. Just don't stay in their sights for longer than 3 seconds and you will be fine. If you just stand around close to sentries as demo or pyro, they WILL check you first.

Also remember that you eventually have to switch your disguises up. The enemy team will catch on to your routine if you keep disguising as the same thing. Disguise as medic or an enemy spy (this one is pretty good actually) if you have to.

One more thing. When sapping level 3 sentries, sap it then shoot them with your revolver. Chances are the engineer guarding it will take care of your sapper if they know what they're doing. The only real chance you have of destroying it is using your revolver. You have a pretty good shot of taking care of it that way.

Buddy, listen to me, burning a good spy is not that simple, you can trust me on that one, taking that flamethrower and spewing it about hoping you'll burn that darned spy ain't gonna do you any good if he knows what he's doing.

I use scout disguise and nothing else. It works perfectly. There's been so many games where I use scout disguise 100% of the time and they never start to expect it because I don't trust disguises at all and rely more on cloaking so they hardly even see me before the knife strikes.

I admit there is a luck element to spy but what is pretty vital is a good fps, it's seriously so much easier to be successful with a spy now that I have this new machine to run tf2 with. Just like with Scout. They're both classes that really have a lot of FINESSE I guess and you just can't do that if you lag or have low fps.

Also sidestabbing is the best thing ever.

Yeah, I think I use demo the most as far as disguises go. Sniper is half-decent though if you're trying to get near the other snipers (especially on 2Fort or whatever but the snipers in that level are usually asking for it regardless of what you do).

Are there any good servers that play Well? I really dig that map but no Aussie servers have it on rotation.

I don't even remember when there last was a map that wasn't Goldrush, Badwater Basin, Gravel Pit, Dustbowl or Turbine on map rotation.
