Man..... he's been the leader/dictator of Cuba for half a century. That's crazy. Will a people choose a very different, more democratic leader for themselves now? Or are they too sheltered to know any better? Will this actually change anything? Will there be elections or coups in the future?

Half a century? Not exactly; more like 49 years!

Too bad he couldn't reach that milestone.
Cuba's probably going to change drastically (on American policies on Cuba) by the end of this year.

Probably not, considering, as XxSylverxX pointed out, his brother is running. The same brother that's been the acting President of Cuba since last summer. Has  Cuba changed dramatically since last summer? I honestly don't know.

AWRIGHT, now its time to see which United States Presidential candidate makes this a talking point first.

I thought he was referring to what George Bush said in the article about "WELL MAYBE NOW THEY'LL FINALLY BE A DEMOCRACY"

well the article doesn't really talk about how the next successor will be chosen. That's why I'm asking if there will be some sort of family-passing-down of the position without the chance for democratic elections or if some PEOPLE'S PARTY will show up and steal the hot seat or if his stepping down implies a temporary loss of power where he doesn't have as much control over what happens after his resignation.

doesn't his departure mean there will at least be a chance for the people to force elections upon a weakened government? I'm not really familiar with the history or what tends to happen when  dictator steps down!

The National Assembly is widely expected to elect 76-year-old Raul Castro as his successor, although analysts say there is speculation about a possible generational jump with Vice-President Carlos Lage Davila, 56, a leading contender.
OK, so there is this piece of information. They have a "representative" board of people choose the successor.

I hope someone nice like Fidel becomes the new cuban leader, instead of a new fulgencio batista or someone else that does everything US wants. Thanks to Fidel there is free healthcare in Cuba, so he wasn't an evil dictator like Saddam or pinochet

I can't say that I know how people feel about their leader in cuba, but a few friends that went over there noticed that even though not everyone likes him,it seems to be a somewhat fair person, also I haven't heard any horrible stories like with pinochet in chile.

Isn't his brother next in line for leadership of the country? I believe I've read somewhere that his brother is the vice-president, or the next step down, or something among those lines.

I am half Cuban, my dad coming from Cuba. I really hope things change there, because my dad told me once they did he would take me. I know he really wants to go back but not under Castro's (or anyone like him) rule. My grandfather had to work in the sugar cane fields for three years before they had permission to leave the country (they actually left legally).

a dictatorship can work really well if the leader isn't a power hungry insane freak. Castro had a vision for Cuba and knew how to bring it. He also survived over 600 assassination attempts from CIA.

There are some pretty solid instances of Latin American countries attempting democratic government directly after a dictatorship.
