I never though HD-DVD was going to win the format war. With the PS3 having it built in, that pretty much made Blu-Ray the winner.
The XBOX 360 is now considering moving to Blu-Ray now as well, which would actually help them in the "console war" against Sony.
I don't really understand how this makes sense, as Blu-Ray players can't read HD-DVD discs and the 360 already has an HD-DVD reader and a regular DVD-reader built into it. People don't want to pay several hundred dollars for an add-on/new console that would allow them to play Blu-Ray games. They might sell an add-on for movies, but they are not going to move their games to Blu-Ray.
To be honest, I am sad that Blu-Ray won, as they have too much storage to be practical. I mean, you can fit a theatrical release AND a hi-def release AND the wide-screen release all on a Blu-Ray and still have space left over. Some people might argue that having more space than is necessary is a good thing, but all I can forsee is more useless shit I don't want put on Blu-Rays and the cost going up to reflect how many cool bonuses they have.
In the end it doesn't matter much to me because I don't really watch real DVDs anyways (thank you internets), but it might mean that I'll have to buy a new harddrive to accommodate larger rips.
