The Next Gen DVD Format War is officially over as of today, Feb. 19 2008. Toshiba announced they will reduce the number of HD DVD players they ship to eventually stop shipping them by March. They will not support the Blu-ray format, but will continue supporting regular DVD players. Just another reason to pick up a PS3.  :naughty:

You know, I was thinking, there will eventually be Blu-ray burners in PCs, right? But HD-DVD is just a regular DVD disk? So it seems like Blu-Ray will be more useful in the long run anyway.

Edit: Nvm I'm stupid

This came out of nowhere. Seriously. For a long while (2 years?) I thought Blu Ray was dieing out... and HD DVD was taking the lead. I've heard so little about Blu Ray recently that I thought it was finally being phased out. This is what I get for not actually looking into the matter.

I never even thought Blu-ray had a chance from the start. Especially when I found out the PS3 had a Blu-ray player, thought it was just a gimmick or something.

Huh, really? I didn't believe even for a second that HD-DVD would win. Blu-Ray seemed to have the backing of much more important companies. At least, it did when I researched it (well over a year ago).

I saw this coming. With the Bluray + PS3 combo there was no way it would fail (despite the hopes of many fanboys who wish failure to anything Sony is involved in).

I'm glad this is over, because the war was pretty stupid to begin with.  I won't be buying next-gen discs until blu-ray players are as cheap as DVD/VHS combo players.

Man, I didn't expect this to end so fast.  I thought the two were pretty even up until the last two weeks or so when Engadget has been talking about Walmart dropping HD-DVDs/players and other allegiances being made.

Oh well, I still don't plan to go for any of this for quite a while.  Things could still change (I've heard of other people bringing out their alternatives, although I do doubt they'll be able to catch up at this point).  Sometime in the future I'll get a standalone player, frankly I don't want a gaming system for that purpose at all.

This sort of reminds me of when we got our first DVD player though, my first DVD was a DBZ one and I thought DVDs were the coolest things in the world, I would rewatch scenes over and over just because it was so easy to do.

I never though HD-DVD was going to win the format war. With the PS3 having it built in, that pretty much made Blu-Ray the winner.
The XBOX 360 is now considering moving to Blu-Ray now as well, which would actually help them in the "console war" against Sony.

I was like 10 years old

edit:  also it was some of the earlier episodes because even when i was that young i realized that DBZ got WAY too ridiculous and repetitive later on

I don't really understand how this makes sense, as Blu-Ray players can't read HD-DVD discs and the 360 already has an HD-DVD reader and a regular DVD-reader built into it. People don't want to pay several hundred dollars for an add-on/new console that would allow them to play Blu-Ray games. They might sell an add-on for movies, but they are not going to move their games to Blu-Ray.

To be honest, I am sad that Blu-Ray won, as they have too much storage to be practical. I mean, you can fit a theatrical release AND a hi-def release AND the wide-screen release all on a Blu-Ray and still have space left over. Some people might argue that having more space than is necessary is a good thing, but all I can forsee is more useless shit I don't want put on Blu-Rays and the cost going up to reflect how many cool bonuses they have.

In the end it doesn't matter much to me because I don't really watch real DVDs anyways (thank you internets), but it might mean that I'll have to buy a new harddrive to accommodate larger rips. :drwily:

The more you can store on a disc the better. More content, less discs.

Kaempfer, right now it's just a rumor, but the 360 is going to need something to combat Sony's PS3 in terms of high definition(movies). The only way now is going with a built in Blu-Ray reader or do what they did with the HD-DVD add-on. This might not have an actual effect on the 360 at all though, since I doubt people buy it for movies, and it has such a massive library of games as it is. You're right though, moving the games to Blu-Ray would be pointless.

Personally I think that discs are the worst format for anything, movies, music, whatever, just because they are so easily damaged and rendered unreadable. For this reason though they are also killer cheap to produce for the company, while a consumer may have to shell out another 30 bucks for content that they ahve already purchased just to have a readable copy. This is why I thank Nintendo for putting thier stuff on cartredges longer than it was practical to do. Cartredges outlive discs in the average family's home any day.

More specifically, I don't like how this turned out. Namely because HD-DVDs were simply dual layer regular DVDs, but now it looks like there is a whole new format. This takes the production of this media out of the hands of consumers and thier immediate equipment, at least for a couple years, unless they're willing to fork out the cash for the new always overpricedcomputer hardware.

Does anyone even OWN a blu-ray player?

Unless they make one that's backwards compatible with DVD's then I don't give two flying fucks.  It's not like there's anything available on blu-ray that isn't available on DVD.  Hell, spending 30 bux to watch AUSTIN POWERS in hi-def isn't even fucking worth it.

I have a feeling blu-ray will end up dying off eventually because NO ONE CARES.  HD-DVD's may have gone the way of UMD's but blu-ray will be following in its footsteps until something new comes out.
