I'd like some recommendations on which router & wireless card to use. My price range is 100-150. It's going to be setup in a small apartment: one room will have the router setup (obviously) and on the other side of the apt will be my computer. I need something that can support online gaming. I can't afford a shitty connection (as in slow) and I can't afford it to drop on me in the middle of a game (reliable). Given the above parameters, whatchu thinking? Thanks.

EDIT: If the above is not possible, then rec me a good router I can run an ethernet to.

Even though I'm no expert when it comes to brands and stuff, I'm pretty sure that even if you are really close to the router and with the best possible equipment it will still not be the same as a cable. That said, I'm not sure if what you're after is possible and if possible, I'd stick with cable.

There are 2 wireless computers at home, using factory wireless cards (no clue which) and. One is in the same room than the wireless (practically one meter away from it) and rarely gets completely disconnected. The other one is in the floor below and suffers from disconnects and lots of packet loss. We've a Linksys WRT..something something.

My D-Link DI 524 is pretty reliable for wireless, though it's the only wireless router I've used.  It was fine for MMOs and never disconnected people.

I agree with mar77a. If you want fast (wireless N is 74mbps), and reliable (all wireless will eventually drop or accept some form of interference), best chance is with cable. I had done wireless for the same reason and ended up just buying a really long cat 5 cable. The lower ping times, dropped packets, and random disconnects were just too much for me and all my online gaming.

I'd like to give some good recommendations on wireless hardware, but N just came out and I have no real experience with it. As for B/G, I think the WRT54G is a great choice. Lots of good open source firmwares available for it too, if you're into heavy customization.

Wireless N is 540mbps, at least it was when I last heard. That's megabits. In megaBYTES, it's 67.5MBps. Of course real world performance will suck from that.

According to wiki, wireless N is listed with a data rate of 74 Mbit/s with a max transfer of 300 Mbit/s.
