Apparently this topic used to be here, but then was merged with the rules topic. So, now that there's so much free sticky space, we're bringing it back out.

Does this forum have standards?

YES, IT ACTUALLY DOES.

Believe it or not, we have standards for topic quality. This isn't just a forum where you say "i love super mario discuss". When you make a topic, you actually need to put some effort into it. You need to think. Say to yourself, "hmm. I wonder how popular this game is? Maybe I should include some links and a few screenshots. GW has it's own free file uploader, so it's easy to upload screens without leeching someone elses bandwidth!"

Don't just make a topic, say you like or don't like game x, and tell us to discuss. IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY, CHUMP.

A Bad Topic

"hey i thought morrowind was good but it got boring, discuss"

Why is this topic bad?

- No personal thoughts. Why was it good? Why did it get boring?
- No screenshots, system info, or anything. All you give is a name forcing people to google shit if they want to even know what you mean. When you make a topic, it's your duty to inform people. They should NOT have to do research just to know what you're talking about, in MOST cases anyway.
-No solid basis for discussion. Someone else is forced to find ways to discuss your topic, instead of you laying down some groundwork for discussion, such as graphics, gameplay, or difficulty.

How can it be improved?

"I liked Morrowind a lot. It's got a huge community and following and is very open to modding, which is really cool because people add tons of cool stuff to the game, like new towns and stuff.

The basic premise to the game is........... (explain)

The graphics are pretty dated at this point, but there are mods to fix that......... (explain more etc)

My favourite part of the game had to be robbing the people of Seyda Neen blind, just after being released! I love how.......... (etc)

So, does anyone have some funny Morrowind experiences or thoughts to share?"

SEE HOW MUCH BETTER THAT IS? It gives people a reason to read your topic and a basis for their discussion.

Just follow this formula, and you'll be fine.

Screenshots + info + links + personal thoughts = decent topic

Examples of good topics:
Gears of War 2
Street Fighter IV

Examples of bad topics:
Castlevania: DXC
Something stupid

Topics concerning news and other general topics
When you post a topic about news or any subject which you find interesting, don't just quote your source and say "discuss". If you are going to create a topic on some subject, share your own opinions and open up the discussion that way. Same goes for ANY topic you create. Show example of how to do it and aim to have a decent topic with intelligent debating.
