What is this CRC and why do some torrent sites give a CRC for each torrent?

BTW, don't point me towards the wikipedia article

it's to help make sure you're getting the right thing. if someone changes the file, the CRC will change so you know it's different
it's similar to an MD5 checksum

That makes sense. Will a bit torrent client automatically stop downloading if the CRC changes? I've been trying to download a certain file but I keep getting a "Disk Read Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check failed." So I thought there was something wrong with my hard drive (my other one failed just recently so this could be very possible), but I downloaded other files without a problem, so could it possibly be something wrong with someone who is seeding it? :/

I'm gonna try downloading it on another computer to make sure.
