After tearing off chunks of our block cheese, delving into our raisins (usually saved for making oatmeal) and eating a tortilla with honey, I suddenly realized that my wife and I are COMPLETELY OUT OF SNACKS. :(
Her snack of choice is Cheez-Its, and I like to indulge her from time to time, but she goes through those things like a drunken Filipino goes through bottles of San Miguel Beer. I can pretty much be content with anything, although that honey tortilla was a bit strange and desperate.
So here's what I pose to you all: what is the BEST snack (in taste, nutrition, and frugality)? We don't have a lot to spend so please don't suggest something crazy like GOJI BERRIES (sorry Doktormartini!). Our main focus is on taste and affordability!

Feel free to share any bizarre recipes or experiences as well. :)

I always do wheat thins and seafood dip (can be found at the grocery store, but I'm not sure if it's as good as the kind I get).  Pretty inexpensive and tasty.  Can't vouch for how healthy it is, though.

canned sardines (well, canned seafood in general) can be purchased in bulk for like... 25 cents apiece and they're tasty and come in multiple flavors.

personally i've always been a fan of naan (a persian flatbread that's really filling) and hommus dip.  hommus is this paste made out of chickpeas and it's cheap and comes in several dozen flavors.  if you want something sweet, spread mascarpone cheese (a sweet and creamy spread) mixed with honey on some naan or flatbread.

ramen noodles

I might consider getting some, but they're kind of bland. Any way to spice it up a bit besides maybe just throwing in some frozen peas or whatnot?

they taste a lot better with money if you have any

they usually come with a flavour sachet which is better than eating them raw flavourwise. they're a good snack on their own but there's tonnes of recipes by single guys who've made them into a meal

Bag of Doritos and a can of chili.  Microwave chili with lots of shredded cheddar cheese, mix, and serve.

For an added bonus, make a dorito-chili-cheese burrito.  Just mix in a bunch of doritos to the previous mixture and roll it into a tortilla.

Baby carrots.  Little, pre-peeled nublets of orange goodness.  Nature's pretzels.

A nice cup of tea and some cookies.  Satisfying.

Cut up a russet potato or two into little cubes and pan-fry them in vegetable oil.  When crispy and delicious looking, simply put them on a plate and cover them in ketchup.

Find yourself and Æbleskiver http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86bleskiver (Or, preferably, a VIKING SHIELD and an OPEN FLAME.  An Æbleskiver is more convenient though.)  Add butter to each "cup" and pour in your favorite pancake batter.  At this stage you can insert whatever filling you want.  (Little pieces of apple, chocolate, sausage, bacon, ham, beef, abalone, sasquach meat, unicorn.)  Turn each one with a skewer (or the tip of a broadsword.) and then serve.  Kids love em, and so do large Viking men.

Avocado, eaten directly out of the shell with a spoon is fantastic.  It's like eating butter, only better.

Sunflower seeds, dude.  They're like 50 cents per package and unless you have a problem with salt then they're incredibly healthy.  Peanuts and things are also great ideas and inexpensive.  Any sort of fruit that requires little to no preparation is great too (strawberries, blackberries, cherry tomatoes), but depending on where you live they could either be really affordable or really expensive.

If you keep the ingredients in stock (although a lot of them are ingredients you'd already have in the house), it's also great to make no bake chocolate oatmeal cookies.  They don't take long at all to prepare and will last several days.  They don't specifically fit into the "nutritious" part, but they're healthier than most cookies considering the ingredients are mostly things like peanut butter and oatmeal.

Fruit is UPRC's snack of choice. I bought a pineapple after work yesterday. I'm loving that sucker!

If you need to go cheap, go for apples. They're like half a cent for fifty or something.

That's true, apples are cheaper than most fruits.  They're also good if you cut them up and dip them in peanut butter.

Anyone have any good salsa recipes? Mine always comes out runny and tasting way too strongly of onion.

Quote
dried fruit (usually pineapple, cherry, or apricot)
pecans, hazelnuts (nuts)
almonds, peanuts, cashews, pine seeds, pistachios (seeds)
toast with jam or marmalade
these range from really healthy to not bad for you. but more importantly they all taste really good, imo

ps has anyone from England ever tasted marmite?

A huge bowl of Cheerios drizzled with about 1/3 a cup of Syrup is good. It's like eating hundreds of tiny, crispy waffles.

My recipe is:

1. Get in car.
2. Drive to Convenient store.
3. Purchase canned salsa of choice.
4. Open jar and enjoy.
