Seems to me like this forum needs a bit of a wake-up call to be honest! I think it could be cool if we started up this topic again, remember no lists!
Try to give the album a decent review around a paragraph long so someone can see if they are actually want to check the band out that you are listening to, this gives meaning to the topic beyond constant name dropping!

Here's the current album I am listening to

Between the Buried and Me: Colours
Genre: Progressive/Mathcore/Jazzheavyfun

I heard about this band through gw and despite their emo or metal-core sounding name they are actually really really good and Mike Portnoy loves them also :).
Between the buried and me is like everything you wanted Dream Theater to sound like: Less boring, less cheesier, heavier and waaaay more experimental.
At first listen BTBAM is some pretty heavy shit and it didnt really click with me all that much apparent from obvious observations like "man this is tech as fuck".
This is one very varied cd, it definately takes a few listens to appreciate but it is pretty exciting to listen to and once you get an ear for it it's the type of album you could listen to for like a whole month. Vocals are like either really soft or screaming which is actually kinda reminiscient of Lamb of Gods vocals IMO (Despite them being a horrible band).
My favourite moments on the album are actually some of the Jazz and Country acoustic moments and bits where suddenly the intensity REALLY picks up!

Also check out their website it has some really cool art work! http://www.victoryrecords.com/albumtrailers/colors/

Tusk-Tree of No Return

A very interesting experimental grind band who hails from Chicago.  If you are a fan of Pelican, you should know what to expect here as they share two members.  Lots of droning and noisy riffs but with the added touch of the frantic and downright strange vocals of Laurent Lebec.  This album was pretty damn hard for me to digest at first but it has sense grown on me.  The atmosphere of the music creates a atmosphere heavy with dementia/insanity.  I really am having a hard time describing this CD accurately, so if you have an open mind, give it a listen.  This CD also came packaged with a DVD with a few clips from live shows.  Pretty wild stuff which involves the vocalist writhing around on stage haha...  I'm rambling.

If you like grind/exp stuff that is pretty off the wall, buy/download this album and let me know what you think.

Yes, BTBAM are amazing. I'm personally a fan of their alaska work but colors is awesome to (although I felt it was a bit dragged out).

As for me, someone on the UG forums introduced me to a japanese screamo band named Envy.

This band is simply amazing. I may not know any japanese but even then you can still feel the singer's energy in all the songs. The best way I can describe their music is screamo hardcore mixed with post rock influences. Alot of their stuff will have moment where it sounds just so raw and powerful than switch to more quiet, almost gloomy, melodic sound. I highly recommend this band if your even remotely into screamo or even post-rock.
Myspace
And one of my favorite songs by them
Chain Wandering Deeply (live)
Again, I seriously recommend you guys check them out, they really are an amazing band.

man if you're so concerned about the thread quality, you're just making it worse with your dumb rebuttals.

but thanks for making this topic :) I just can't stick around #music, and I'm not a big fan of irc in general so this general music talk is cool for me

Hercules and Love Affair

man, this album. a lot of the tracks feature vocals by Antony Hegarty, who is just awesome. like, you can tell he's probably a transvestite when you hear him sing for the first time, but it's so good and it just grows on you and adds a lot of color to the music. the female vocals unfortunately kind of sound like a weak Dani Siciliano (particularly in the the last track, True False/Fake Real), but they still work well enough and don't exactly hurt the album imo. the whole thing comes together to form an album that seems to recall many fond things, but mainly disco

Album/Artist: Some 'best of' collection by The Doors
Genre: Acid Rock???

This stuff is excellent. It's pretty much what the 60s was all about. Listening to Morrison's psychedelic voice is like taking a trip back three or four decades. It's really solid music, fun to listen to too.

I am listening to

(A Shimmering Radiance) Diadem of 12 Stars by Wolves in the Throne Room. I found it just now on last.fm and its a twenty minute long black metal song so I told my friend I would listen to the whole thing. It isn't entirely awful but it is pretty boring!

I remember I tried to get away with doing a version of '4:33' for my Music practicals back in school... The teacher wasn't impressed...
Anyway, I've been listening to "Rumble: The Best Of Link Wray" by Link Wray.

Link Wray was kind of a proto-punk rockabilly guitarist from the 50s/60s who pioneered the use of power chords and distortion in his records, making him a direct influence on pretty much every garage/punk/grunge band ever. His first single was 'Rumble', which was almost banned for being a bad influence on children... Not bad when you consider that it was a fucking instrumental. That's how hardcore he was.
Anyway, the CD collects pretty much all of his best stuff like 'Rumble', 'Jack the Ripper', 'Run Chicken Run', 'Big City After Dark', and a bunch more nasty, corrosive surf-punk instrumentals... It's a good introduction to his stuff, so if you haven't heard him before, buy it!

yup, lemme see if I can redirect an image

nope. his main/early acts largely center around transvestitism etc though, and I think Blacklips (which was the precurser to the music of Antony and the Johnsons) performed entirely in drag.

I feel like Hercules and Love Affair will become rather HIP, so it might actually turn out to be a bigger break for him than A&tJ

I am currently listening to OCEANA's debut album The Tide.

OCEANA is a new band on the popular hardcore label Rise Records. I found out about them at a Rise Records showcase, and fell in love right away. Sure their music sounds like every other hardcore band, but there's just something about them. I highly recommend them to anybody that is seeking a change of sounds.

I am currently listening to Feist- The Reminder.

You've probally heard of her, my girlfriend is into this singer after seeing that Ipod ad which got me into her a bit and I enjoy listening to her when I'm in the right mood.

I think the easiest way to describe her is kinda like a female Surfjan Stevens, shes not quite as good but I like her voice and the album is great IMO.

Alot of her songs are kinda like acoustic ballads, reminds me of Eva Cassidy, sometimes I find it boring but when I'm in the mood its nice.

This track is still my fave:  http://youtube.com/watch?v=Uk_lZ37bUOM

I really like the Banjo and it's a cool video in general.

I don't know why everyone loves The Reminder so much, I much rather prefer Let it Die, a far more solid album imo.

I'm currently listening to Deerhoof -- Friend Opportunity

Album cover:

band:

Genre: Experimental Indie?

I don't even know how to classify this music, it's pretty weird.  I've grown accustomed to it though and now I think it's really fucking awesome.   It's pretty much really experimental indie-type riffs with a japanese chick singing really horrible lyrics that are surprisingly extremely catchy. I know lots of people who absolutely loathe this band because of the really weird instrumentals and the singer's japanese accent but seriously it pretty different and maybe some of you will like it (indie trash).
I wanted to see them but the show was 19+, oh well :(.  They were relatively unknown prior to this latest release but now (especially here in Toronto), they've been getting a lot more attention. Who knows, maybe they'll become MAINSTREAM but I really doubt that.

Check this shit out, but you may not like it:

It's the only album I've heard by her so I can't really say I prefer it to anything.

Seeing these album covers is quite cool.

Listening to Bliss by Muse
Album: Hullabaloo
Image: Looking
Genre: A mixture of punk rock and electronic. Here's the link for ''Bliss''.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrROiUNwgCM

Most of their songs are really deep. The lyrics are touching, the music is astonishing (depends on the song) and the singer's voice is beautiful. This is a band I recommend for people who are romantics, dramatics or artists.

I think most people like/know of Feist's the Reminder because 1234 was on that one ipod commercial, and My Moon My Man was on some phone commercial. I really enjoyed the album, but I have to agree that Let it Die is better. I can put it up for you if you want

just gonna leech images like everyone else

I can't stand mushaboom though. I'd probably love it if it wasn't for the little shaboom shaboom in the background ugh so gross

Antoine Dufour - Development

So yeah, if your into acoustic guitar players, I highly recommend you look into Antoine Dufour. Hes got alot of very mellow songs that just make you want to chill the fuck out. At the same time his music just sounds so full and melodic. To top it off, a good amount of songs feature the very talented Tommy Gauthier on violin. He and Antoine just work well with each other and just make such amazing music. I would go as far as to say Development is a must for someone into acoustic guitar. Seriously, he makes incredible music, the songs all have a strong melody and just have a good groove to them as well.

Here's a few of the songs from the album
Spiritual Groove (Feat. Tommy Gauthier)
