Hi there. r and I are fans of a Dutch cartoon that we used to watch when we were young called Alfred J. Kwak. It's an amazing cartoon because it's made for children yet deals with very sensitive topics like famine, apartheid and racism in a very real way.

This cartoon has been translated into many different languages, but it appears that only the Dutch version can be found anywhere, and there are no subtitles to be found. So, we want to try subbing it in English ourselves so that you chumps can watch it too.

My question: how does one softsub a video? What's the easiest way? Is there a good howto somewhere? Is there anything in particular that we need to keep in mind?

Thanks!

If you use a recent version of Windows Movie Maker, you will notice that there is a 'layer' when editing a video that allows you to enter text in the video. You can enter the subtitles this way. I'm sure there are better and more effective ways of getting the job done but if it calls for desperation, it gets the job done.

DO NOT listen to Strangeluv.

Basically you need a subtitle program... I used SubstationAlpha that had a pretty straightforward interface but it's old as shit. I'd see if there are newer versions or else try AegisSub (This is what most fansubbers use I think), or alternatively another good program is "URUSOFT Subtitle Workshop" (This one is free, made in Uruguay)... The good thing about this one is that it supports virtually every subtitle format ever and also has alot of tools for adjusting subtitles and converting them between formats and whatnot.

I'm using Aegisub right now. It seems to work pretty well but it can't open up the files in their original format (MPEG layer 2 with a twist). I already timed and translated the intro so it seems to be working pretty well apart from that. I'll leave the actual encoding of the MKV files to r though.

Alfred J. Kwak looks awesome, can't wait to see these. Remember to use low-motion encoding for cartoons/anime.

Hah. Awesome. I might actually be bothered to help you do this, if you're interested.

I remember I used to watch this show when I was very young, so I don't really seem
to remember how deep this show supposedly is. I'm going to watch this as soon as I've
finished the Samurai Pizza Cats.

We might need your help. This is looking to be quite a major task. I subbed the intro and a few minutes of the beginning of the first episode, and while it seems like it isn't very difficult, it's just going to take a while. If you're interested, maybe you could come to IRC sometimes? r and I hang out in #chess at irc.whahay.net.

(Incidentally I'm also watching Samurai Pizza Cats right now, another show I used to watch as a child.)

oh man i used to watch this show as a kid, only that it was in arabic back then. Aegisub is suggested and you're going to HAVE to convert mkv/ogm/any other extension. it takes forever to sub so gave up long time ago.

but you shouldnt need to worry about samurai pizza cats, that show should be already subbed if not dubbed somewhere out there.
