Soul Eater Info (Anime News Network)

Official Website:
Official Website

Scouting across new releases, I've found this to probably be the most interesting (Animated TV Series in Japan) in 2008 so far. The first episode of Soul Eater will air in about 2 and a half weeks from me writing this topic.

You can find and read the original manga here.

A couple notes about the series that I find kind of interesting;

- I THINK that the manga was done by the same artist who did Get Backers He was an assistant.
- The musical composer is Taku Iwasaki, who is known for more dramatic scores (Rurouni Kenshin Movies/Witch Hunter Robin/ROD The TV)
- It is done by the Animation Production team "BONES"

So could this be the next Naruto/Bleach/Eureka 7/Full Metal Alchemist?

Looks pretty interesting. I especially like the art style. I heard that the station will air two episodes a day. Not exactly two episodes but two versions, one of them airing at midnight.

Eh, it looks like your standard array of anime characters.  I see the GRIMFACE quiet guy in the top right, the goofy ditzy girl in the lower right, the cheery but badass girl in the top left, the "too-cool-for-school" punk in the lower left, the badass muscleman on the left, the strong but emotional female in the center, and the strong bad ass female who turns out to be a complete tsundere above that.

Oh, and the wise cracking magical talking pet.

So... I haven't read the manga but what makes this anime stand out from the rest of the pack?  Please enlighten me to the hook or what it's about.

The only thing I found interesting was not the concept, fights, story, or characters, as those were fairly generic. The only thing that was interesting for me was the art-style.

Even it's art style looks pretty generic.

The anime, provided that it's anything like the manga so far, will have nothing that will differentiate it from other generic stuff other than a slightly different premise that leads to the same fanservice and random goofiness and a-dime-a-dozen crap that every - and I repeat, every - other anime has.

Other than a few sequels of decent shows, it seems like so many of the "popular" crap that comes out of Japan these days are utterly generic.  Wonder why that is?

Probably because we constantly create the demand and settle for sub-par material to the point where we've dried up the industry due to our obsession, causing even the incredibly generic stories to gain popularity. There's nothing new under the sun, or at least not nowadays.

True. I never said it wasn't generic. All I said was that it was a bit interesting and a bit of a change-up from what I usually read. I was kind of interested in the dark cartoony chibi-ness of it all, even though it is common. I mainly like the backdrops (what caught me was the sun and the moon) Just by looking at the manga, I could imagine the Twilight Town battle music (from KH:CoM) playing during the fights.

I was going to read this manga at one point, but decided I had other things I could waste my time reading, but the art looks decent, I may~ check it out, who knows.

Info:
Quote
Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon meisters, the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to make the latter a "Death Scythe" and thus fit for use by the Shinigami, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch.

Something I found interesting was that the lead female character's VA is Junko Takeuchi aka Naruto's voice actress.

I think that it is broadcasting tomarrow.

Soul Eater still has much potential to be a great all-around series. It may not be the next Naruto or Bleach, but it is good to scout around for the new ones as there WILL be shounens that are better and bigger than Naruto, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, or Eureka 7 within the future.

So far, this is the only one within 2008 that is looking promising to me, as it has Taku Iwasaki. It's not enough to tell, though, so it could be really generic; or just be filler madness.

D. Gray man + Bleach + everything else.  Nothing to see here folks, move along.

I heard this one was good from someone who hates Shonen animes... yet I can't understand Japanese...

I don't know if Amatsuki is shounen or not, but the concept of it seems like a cool idea. I didn't read the manga though, so I don't have any idea how it is. No one has subbed any of these new serieses yet unfortunately.

I like all kinds of manga and am a big fan of Bleach, Naruto and Fairytail, so I tried this.
Sadly, I must honestly say I didn't like it much. I guess that's just because how it's build
up though, so I'm trying the anime anyway.
The only thing dumber than an argument on the Internet is the same argument in real life.

It's part of the Japanese culture. They are xenophobic so they strive for, and praise conformity.

Oh I guess that's why I want to learn Japanese so I can SCARE JAPANESE PEOPLE

Edit: 'frighten japanese people' sounds funnier

Yeah, Soul Eater isn't just another generic shonen title. It's a shonen title with crazy Halloweenish visuals starring a girl with a transforming scythe.

Niiiice.

If it isn't a generic shounen title... why did it pull from the grab bag of cheap gimmicks? I thought LOLHOOKS where what defined a shounen series?
