Pocky is pretty delicious, honestly. If you're going to buy any, buy Almond Crush flavor.

I'd say just be yourself and bring lots of money, if you're in to buying stuff. I can blow $100-150 at a convention weekend, mostly because I buy little things like $3 manga and DVDs and lots of Almond Crush Pocky (there's nothing "japfaggy" about it, to me... it just tastes good). But if you're a hardcore collector of some kind, say figurines or jewelry or something, I'd tell you to bring more. The dealer's room is really fun, but make sure you check out some of the panels, too. Anime Convention Orlando (AFO) has a multitude of really fun ones like Anime Name That Tune, or Trivia, or "The Worst Anime in Existence" (the last one was awesome).

If there are special guests, like voice actors or artists attending, you might have fun checking out those panels, too. I remember waiting for a panel with Chris Sabat (who played half the cast on Dragon Ball Z), who had apparently slept in late and was trying to find his "dragon balls", whatever that meant.

Yeah, AFO was like my second convention back in 2005-ish, and really the best so far: my sister and our two friends got a room at the hotel, we took place in a lot of events and panels, and a great list of voice actors showed up (practically the whole Fullmetal Alchemist cast showed up, along with Jeff Nimoy, Quinton Flynn, and hahaha, Veronica Taylor as Ash Ketchum). Travis Willingham (Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist) and his fanclub, the Miniskirts, faced off against Vic Mignogna (Edward Elric) and his fanclub in a game of dodgeball. Poor thirteen-year old Aaron Dismuke (Alphonse Elric) was subjected to screaming fangirls during his panel. We marveled at the amount of people willing to shell out $100+ to buy a gunblade. We formed a conga line at the rave and partied till 2AM. There's just too much stuff that happens in a con to say all at once. I will say, however, that I hate the fact that I had to miss Megacon this year. It's one of the biggest and the most fun, but I was flat broke at the time. :(

I don't know why you guys are all hating on anime conventions. They are generally quite fun, you get anime merchandise at cheap prices, and there do tend to be some really great cosplayers there. I've been to AFO, Jacon, and Megacon (which is anime + comics), and I've had a great time at all three. Heck, I even get a hotel room at AFO every year, despite the fact that we live only twenty minutes away from the convention center, because it's just a lot more fun to be where all the action is.

Don't let all these jaded people get you down on anime conventions. No one's going to "glomp" you as long as you're not dressed as anyone, and most everyone there is friendly. People get a kick out of cosplaying (hell, I did it last year) because it's fun to make costumes. You kind of challenge yourself with the intricate designs on a lot of them, and you gain a feeling of self-achievement when you stand back, look at it, and realize that it actually looks pretty good. And wearing it is fun too, I guess. :D

I mostly go for the really cheap stuff (manga and DVDs at $3? Sweet!), but the atmosphere there, especially at AFO (which is smaller than Megacon, but larger than many), is like some mystic home away from home. In those three days I made some friends, had some laughs, spent some cash, and got this pang of nostalgia when I packed up my clothes and realized that I had to head back into the real world again. Seriously, there's just something cool about escaping everything for a weekend just to hang around with people with similar interests, overzealous or moderate they may be. All in all, a fun time if you allow yourself to forget, for a time, that you might seem a bit loser-ish on the outside looking in.

I don't know man, pocky is pretty pricey.

I'm all for cheap merchandise, though.  I've got this huge army backpack and I plan on gobbling up DVD's and manga.  Beats paying 30$ for 4 episode DVDs of whatever new series.

Pocky is pretty tasty but I never eat it with other people around because inevitably some fangirl is going to go "OMG POCKY" (and actually say OMG like that).  But yeah, there's a huge difference between people who watch anime and people who are otakus.  The difference is that I will on occasion watch an anime series, whereas the girl that sits next to me in my CS class reads Naruto fanfics in the middle of class and will, out loud, go "twitch, twitch" when her programs don't work (she blames the compiler not working when she forgets fucking semicolons every time)

I watch more anime than is healthy, but I don't like the idea of going to a convention.  The thought of dressing as someone I'm not is illogical to me.  You'll never be that character, no matter how hard you try to look like them.  Since they're largely cast in Japanese first for their voice, you'll probably never sound like them either.  Perhaps I just don't see the point because I never got a kick out of Halloween, either.  I think I stopped going around on Halloween at about age eight, perhaps younger.

It's essentially like acting in costume. Well, the same basic idea anyways. In any case whether or not you cosplay is up to you. You can just mock people that do if that's what you want, to be honest some costumes practically ask for it.

Also, pocky is good but I can't for the life of me understand the over-obsession.

Definitely, it's a fucking food, not a WAY OF LIFE.   :fogetnah:

You never see anyone rave about tomatoes like that.

Aw, man, I can almost picture people cosplaying as tomatoes.

Similarly, I think pocky is quite enjoyable, but it's not the sort of thing I go out of my way to purchase. If it's there (and it's cheap), I'll stock up.

You should see some of the underclassmen eat with my lunch group, though (actually, it's sort of two circles connected together because one of my friends is acquainted with all of them). They're still in that stage where "JAPAN PWNZ ALL" so whenever someone brings pocky they literally mob the unsuspecting victim. And they're so LOUD. They spend all of lunch reading manga together... I mean, it's not like I make fun of them for it, but when they alternate between actually SQUEEing over manga and hardcore "glomps" and then actually reading out loud from the series they're reading.... well, it tends to get a bit trying.

And they pull too many gestures from anime, like they'd work in real life. If you want to massage someone's nipples, that's fine but please do it in the privacy of your own home. Seriously, I've actually had to say that more than once.

I hope that I'll be able to instill some sense of normalcy within them before I graduate. Honestly, I'm all for individuality and all that, but what's acceptable (and even fun, as I've stated previously) at anime conventions does NOT work in real life.

Because it's japanese. Sheesh.

WunderBread, becomming a stereotype... is hardely in the name of individuality. They ain't being individuals, but imitating others. It's a plague, that should be incinerated.

Clothing?!?

You don't have to bring jack shit, just go there and enjoy the show. Noone's gonna give a shit about what clothes you're wearing, except that cosplaying means you get more attention, and tshirts with anime prints on them is good conversational fluff. Bringing lots of money is a good idea though, just remember, don't bring more than you want to spend.

It's actually gotten very easy to purchase, here in the middle of fucking nowhere I can buy it at Walmart, no joke.  I actually know of some japfags that were mad that Walmart had it I guess because Walmart is pretty NON JAPANESE.  They're upset that their OBSESSIVE FOOD is easier to get now.

I've been to A-Kon a few times. This year will make it my fourth time there. As far as I know, there is usually a large amount of jap-faggery drenching every thing in its bath. Prepare to see endless Naruto and Bleach cos-players. There will be people asking cosplayers for photos with them and such. The one I've been to had some cool stuff here and there. There were some game tournaments with people screaming "OOOOOHH!" every time someone dies or looses, whatever. It sounds like a really shitty deal, but someone how I always have fun there. I go with a few friends every year and there are some cool booths here and there. Prepare to have your ear showered with japfags butchering the Japaneses language by inserting chan, kun, sama, etc. every two words. But yeah, other than that, its not so bad.

are you kidding me? that sounds awesome. I would love to goto something like that

Don't be dissin on mtg.

Man, there was a small anime convention near my town not that long ago...

And it still takes me at least three and a half hours to get to the nearest mtg prerelease event.

Anime gets way too much kudos and mtg gets hardly none. The mtg craze needs to hit fucking mainstream and the Anime craze needs to back the fuck down.

Now.

I've been to about four anime conventions. It's fun to take pictures of the good cosplays. Spending time in the game room is also fun, even if I get annihilated at fighting games. A lot of guys you meet there are good. I don't mean the regular good, but the practice five hours a day good. Other than that I just walk around with my friends and check out the panels. A good way to kill a weekend. Also, I wouldn't recommend going to one by yourself unless you easily mangle with people. Walking around a con' by yourself is the opposite of fun.

Nope, it's a cracker, but in stick form (like, remember those snack packs that include those cracker sticks that you dip in some kind of cheese? Yeah it's those but much longer and skinnier). And it's usually covered in chocolate or some other flavor of frosting stuff.

Although they also come in pretzel sometimes.

Biscuit sticks coated with chocolate (or some other flavor, like strawberry) covering 3/4 of the stick. The remaining 1/4 is where you're supposed to hold it. It's good.

Edit: Oops, someone beat me to it.

It's kind of candy bar-like but in a stick shape.  Like a Kit Kat or something, I can't really find anything to compare the taste to.  They also have other flavors than chocolate that all taste like ass (except MEN'S POCKY but that is just a different kind of chocolate so that still counts as chocolate).
