Actually dude stores can be prosecuted over here for selling them (or having them on display in store).

(EDIT: I misspelt prosecuted, presecuted which resembles persecuted... which is totally the opposite of my stand)

To be honest, there are various interpretations of the story. You can read some of them on Wikipedia. The most commonly known version is that he was a slave that got freed by Sinterklaas and then decided to serve him freely.

Also, what the fuck?? From the gollywog car incident and the way some of you are talking, it would seem like racism is illegal in the UK? Like, the police have the authority to remove any sign or gollywog doll that they deem racist?

I had a gollywog when I was younger and also a children's book featuring a gollywog, which I think were from my grandmother. I consider them to be merely relics of old society

(that's not to say that they aren't grossly inappropriate in modern society in anything other than a historical context, though)

Yeah they have the right, and racism is far from illegal in the UK. Racism's still a serious issue over here, just less towards blacks these days.
