Hey guys, I'm looking for some comic recommendations from you guys if you can help me out. I'm not really looking for SERIES at all, I've been subscribing to Daredevil, X-MEN, The Avengers and a few others since a LONG LONG TIME but I cancelled my subscription last year. Now I'm just looking for a few standalone series that have a start and a finish over the course of a few episodes that I can uh... obtain.

I prefer darker comics, more adult/mature content but I don't mean HENTAI MANGA COMICS so don't give me none of that shit.

Any suggestions you have would be great, thanks!

For self contained work:
Anything by Paul Pope - THB, Heavy Liquid, Batman Year 100, 100%, etc...
Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley - it's not dark by any means but it's a great read
52 from DC comics is pretty good but you have to know about the events that occurred before the story takes place.

For continuing series:
Berserk by Kentaro Miura - I dunno if you want manga recommendations or not, but I'm gonna put this forth anyway. It's an amazing title but it will suck up several hours of your life.

*lame kaworu post*
Pick up StormShadow. I think it only went for six issues or somethig, but it's a great comic, a parody of ninjas and covert ops in entertainment.
52 is ace. You'd be able to follow it without knowing what went on beforehand, but it would help to know. Also sticking with DC, Gotham underground is pretty rocking (though I dunno how much of backstory you'd really need to know)

Jesus you canceled your subscription to Daredevil? What's going on man. Daredevil V2 is one of the greatest run-on comics in a long time.

I always advertise the guy in topics like these, but Chris Ware knows how to spin stories.  He's conistently depressing so if you like seeing the protagonists SUCK throughout the entire length of the story, then his Acme Novelty Library series and Jimmy Corrigan are right up your ally.  He tells tales of mostly deranged and mentally challenged individuals and my favorite character from him is RUSTY BROWN who's this creepy pedophile in a jogger's suit.

I plan on making a huge topic about stand alone stories so expect something on the main page this week or so.

Also dude if you like zombies (do you like zombies? you must do) Check out the Walking dead. It's been ongoing for a few years now, it's about a group of survivors and how they try and cope/live with a zombie infested world. It's not standalone, but it's an ongoing series which does all seem to be connected by story! (and Waterstones always seem to have their trade paperbacks in)

This post is a little vague about what I'm supposed to be looking for, I couldn't really pinpoint a comic series name other than Acme Novelty Library and I'm not sure that's it? Other than that, thanks for the suggestions guys I am looking into it all.

Acme Novelty Library is a (sometimes yearly) graphic novel series.  It doesn't tell a single tale, instead it depicts a series of unconnected events focused on several characters and their lives.  Acme Novelty Library vol 18 is the most recent release and there's a collected version that features all the best stories in one volume.  Jimmy Corrigan is the name of ANL vol 16 (I think) that's a 300 something page graphic novel.

Okay, at the moment I've picked up Black Hole which is pretty weird but it's enjoyable. A little TOO teen angsty but it has some cool surreal moments, I've kept reading it so far up to ep 6. Bone, which I have heard a lot of GOOD THINGS about, Sin City, I know it's laughable to a lot of COMIC FANS but I've never read it before so I picked it up and Watchmen. I've looked pretty hard for the Acme Novelty Library but I can't find it, I also looked at 52 and Scott Pilgrim. I might check out 52 if I can get it but Scott Pilgrim didn't really look like my kind of thing.

Thanks for the suggestions.

If you're gunna check out Sin City then only really read the first few volumes. It gets much worse after that.

Oh shit also league of extraordinary gentlemen. Shit you HAVE to read that, it's utterly fantastic (and nothing like the bollucks movie)

Yeah I saw it and considered it but the movie really put me off. I guess I can check it out though. Also Just read the entire Black Hole series in one sitting which was pretty intense. I think if I was reading it issue by issue it wouldn't have held my interest over that period of time but it was pretty neat for one sitting. Not very subtle with DRUGS AND STD' Message though.

the movie is nothing like the comics. Like it's one of them name only things where that;'s the only real connection between the two.
