Akira was a disturbing perversion of the misused capabilities of animation,

That is not a big deal. People are turned off by animations that actually do effectively try to use the full capabilities of animation, because those animations are always too "cartoon-y" and people only feel right watching serious, dramatic, "meaningful" things that they can barely follow and never fully understand.

It makes them feel sophisticated, and less ashamed when people correctly point out that they are in fact watching cartoons.

The action itself and the setting was cool, but the story is confusing and boring, and I've never liked stuff just because I don't understand it. So yeah, I agree with the negative comments.

people from both extremes. hahaha I just realized one is a libertarian and the other has a communist-themed avatar, good times

akira isn't supposed to be fun & entertaining, blitzen. it's a pretty dark film. it's meant to be disturbing, it helps get its ideas across

evangel, you're talking about anime? I dunno I haven't seen them, but they're both studi ghibli I believe so they're probably good. I can't directly compare Akira to anything, but as far as distopian/alternate reality stuff goes, there's loads and loads of stuff out there. the ghost in the shell movie is pretty good. then you've got stuff like children of men etc, I'm not really sure what you're asking for.

I used to have Ghost In the Shell, and I could not once stay awake through that movie.  Bored the hell out of me.

I, too, was once terribly confused by Akira, but now it's like I find something new with each viewing that makes more sense or makes it that much more awesome.  I'd like to read the manga, but that shit's expensive.
