It's to let people make a joke. The best ones are the ones that were blatant, but well done. Look at the April fools by Google, Blizzard and IGN .. they are all obvious, but they are hilarious and smart.

Well, I think the whole point is to see if you can actually one who is deficient in sense someone on that particular day, plus you can do very much of excrement you normally couldn't do, like that Zelda movie IGN did. Besides, you could still do a joke on any other day if you wanted to, contrary to expectation it can be more fun on fourth month first. It's fun to see great jokes done year (again, like IGN's Zelda trailer) together with see some people fall for it, together with some people always fall for it.
