Appearently this premiered in several film festivals last year and is due to be released soon (if not already), Son of Rambow is a coming-of-age story about two kids trying to make their own version of First Blood (Rambo).

Quote from: Wikipedia
Set in "A long, hot summer in the early '80s", the film is a gentle coming-of-age comedy. It tells the story of two schoolboys who are inspired by Rambo: First Blood (which they see on a pirate videotape) to make their own action adventure film. Lee Carter (Will Poulter) — the worst-behaved boy in school — has access to home video equipment as he helps his brother's video pirating enterprises. Will (Bill Milner) couldn't be more different; quiet and shy he comes from a family who belong to the strict Plymouth Brethren religious sect; he is forbidden to watch films or television. When he gets caught up with Carter and accidentally sees First Blood, he is blown away, and becomes Carter's willing co-star and stuntman.

Their film takes on a chaotic life of its own, as they fight to keep control of it, and also to keep it secret from Will's family. Ultimately it changes the lives of both boys, and their relationships with their friends and families.

The trailer is really cool, and it sounds like one of those funny light-hearted kids movies. I personally can't wait to see it. What about you guys??

Actually yeah, this doesn't look that bad at all. Maybe I'll check it out.

Aww, that trailer is so cute. I'll definitely check this out. Also, apparently it's by Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith (who go by Hammer & Tongs). They made the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie, but more notably (in my opinion), they also made that Blur music video with the dancing milk carton.

I saw the trailer for this when I saw Penelope - it looks fantastic, and I loved the other stuff by Garth Jennings (And Goldsmith), so I'm going to see this for sure.

I saw this at the CineWorld festival down here.

IT SUCKS. One of the most pandering "indie-hollywood" films I have ever seen. It substitutes cliches for characterization, cute-looking kids for plot structure, special effects for cinematography, and pop-culture fetishism for social commentary.  Paramount even sent in a security guard to harass potential camrippers (there weren't any).

Avoid like the plague.

Damn :(

Edit: On the other hand, I still think I'd see it. I mean, the movie's premise sounds like one of those fun indie movies you'd see on TV just once, so it's not like I expected good characterization or cinematography.

Yeah, I don't think anyone was really expecting it to be a masterpiece or anything. It just looks really happy and cute more than anything. And I can't imagine a movie like this would have too much gratuitous special effects.

Anyway, I was looking at the who's online list and I saw someone viewing this topic from november and I thought it sounded sort of similar to this and maybe you guys would be interested.

My roommate saw it at Sundance last year and he said it was pretty good if you went in expecting a nice, lighthearted movie.

Did any of you actually READ Cardinal Ximenez' post

edit: I actually read it like three times through and I still thought you were saying the opposite of what you were. Prolly would have understood if I'd watched that trailer.

this doesn't surprise me at all

i don't really know how anybody could see the previews for this and not think it's just a stupid kids movie ala goonies or something(minus anne ramsey[sexiest ][/sexiest])

or just a REALLY CUTE movie i guess which seems to be the appeal from reading this thread. i guess i don't speak for you guys but One Hour Photo is about as far as a movie can get away with being CUTE without making me violently ill

Yeah, I don't know, I guess I'm just more forgiving of this type of shit than you guys are.  I would never ACTUALLY SEE IT of my own volition, but I sort of appreciate the market for movies that entire families can go see or whatever the fuck, and this definitely strikes me as being a movie someone, somewhere, would earnestly call "fun for the whole family."  I don't find it appealing, but I'm not especially offended by it, especially given that I fall well outside of the intended demographic (i.e. people and their children, I imagine).  Movies made FOR certain people is a concept that actually annoys me a lot, but I guess I just differentiate between cinema in the artistic sense, and cinema in solely entertaining sense, when it comes to what standards I hold them to.

That's making it sound like I'm saying GOD IT'S JUST MEANT TO BE FUN ENJOY IT *goes to watch xXx: State of the Union" but it's not really what I mean.  I'm a little out of it so maybe I'm not articulating myself all that well.  I don't like justifying shitty movies about aggressive street dancing and explosions by saying it's just for entertainment and that you should turn your brain off and enjoy it, but I don't think it's fair to judge film made in the pursuit of art or expression by the same standards as a movie made to amuse kids and their parents for ninety minutes, either.  I guess I'm pullin a southpark heh......

Apparently I'm seeing a screening of this at my local movie theater for my Media Arts class tomorrow, and we get a Q & A with the director and producer afterwards which is pretty cool.

no way man that shit was so gay

maybe i'm like hundley and i just don't like CUTE shit but i hated just about every character in this movie especially that fucking french kid who i thought was a girl at first

it was just one of those THE MAGIC OF YOUTH movies and man that was gay.  you guys would probably love it.

i kind of feel bad for disliking it so much though because the producer and the director are such cool guys!  they weren't at all full of themselves or anything and i dont know they were just pretty cool.  too bad this movie was so gay.

edit: by the way i remember sitting in the theater and not laughing at anything until the actual "son of rambow" movie at the end which got a half-smile out of me.  i thought this was pretty weird because even though i hate CUTESY MOVIES i'll usually chuckle at SOMETHING but i didn't in this movie and it actually made me pretty angry!  i was so pissed man i wished that i had skipped class.
